I'd be interested to see the Vulcan in action, all the videos are simply the kid driving around. I've seen one picture with the kid holding the Vulcan detached, anyone know how the guy mounted it on the 'warthog'?

If you take a look at the grenade, it will fit inside the barrel, up until the wide 'lip' near the front of the grenade. That will sit outside the barrel.

So that black bit in the plunger tube is actually the end of the plunger? If you cut off the end, the plunger would still be sealed off from the bolt?

I don't believe they are the same length - I seem to remember seeing pictures of the 'ARMED' plunger being an inch or so longer than current generation Recons. I'll see if I can find pictures.
Edit:
Old

New

I think it's simply another of Hasbro's subtle ways to slowly decrease the power of each generation of gun, as they all seem to be getting weaker with each generation.

Also notice how the plunger comes so far back in the first gen that it almost touches the middle piece in the stock. The end of the bolt only goes to the 'M' in ARMED, too, whilst in the newer plungers, (the shorter ones without 'ARMED') it fills the whole plunger.

I've mentioned it before, but granted, it may have not been clear enough. The grenade will be launched by a spring physically pushing it out, like you said. Imagine a spring powered blaster, and remove the bolt and plunger. The spring will be locked back, and then when fired, unlocks, pushing the grenade out of the barrel.
