Well, I've still got my shotgun, although it's in pieces. Long story short, I dropped it, and it shattered.

I'll see if I can get it to at least be functional.

I feel horrible. I haven't even touched the PVC for my designs. I'm just too lazy. But really, I've been too busy to be able to make a mess and pick it up and I don't have the room right now to just leave it for the next day.

I will be visiting my grandparents soon, and will have access to my grandfather's machine shop for this project.

Edit: Deadline must be extended due to a week-long cross-country road trip. Most of the hard work is done, though. The easy-to-fabricate pieces are next, and then full assembly.

With so much talk about helix mags, grease guns, and loads of ideas, I'm hoping that we can continue the NerfHaven tradition of crankin' out some really bitchin' homemades.

Yes, actually. I have most of the assemblies completed right now, and am working on getting the magazine springs into the correct position in the tube so they don't feed a shell halfway. This gun will be done by mid-next week. I also have an obligation to General Cole for his contest on Foam Universe (which is actually not as bad as you make it sound), and that was on the 11th, but the deadline has been extended, so I will take some more time to get the parts working more smoothly. Pics and ranges to follow the completion.

Right now, the only major flaw in the design is the relatively low magazine capacity, but that can be improved later by replacing the magazine tube with a longer one. Home Depot only had four of the correct springs, so the most is going to be a four-shot capacity. Also, the extraction/ejection system has a tendency to jam about 1/3 of the time, and the extractor's lip is prone to snapping.

Just to prove that I'm not the lazy bastard Piney thinks I am, I have an update on the project:

I had most of the gun completed, but I will redo the lower receiver to get rid of a couple of the sloppier cuts and holes. The trigger mech also has to be redesigned, because it wasn't engaging the catch most of the time, and proved unreliable. Other than that, everything seemed fine. I put it together (the components that I had) and went to test fire it using a nail for the catch, but the damn thing won't fire. I am inclined to believe that the seal between the bolt and bolt carrier needs to be improved, and I will work on that immediately, but if you see anything wrong in the pictures, don't hesitate to point it out.

The assembled portion (ignore the duct tape, I used it to hold the receiver cover on because I haven't put in the screws that keep it in place yet):

The disassembled portion that I have (the duct tape had been placed under the plunger head to protect the carpet from the silicone lubricant, it does not serve any other purpose. Also note that the spring perch has been left in the end of the PVC elbow that serves as part of the stock. I didn't take it out becase the elbow is a pain to remove.):



The bolt and bolt carrier (this component has been improved over boltsniper's bolt, as the bolt automatically returns to its forward position when nothing is engaging it. This prevents jams occurring as the result of the bolt rotating while disengaged from the chamber, and also guarantees that the bolt head will be oriented correctly to eject the shell every time):

That's about it. Questions, comments, critiques? This gun will be finished. I do not give up on projects like this.

I think the ranges will be close to what the SCAR can achieve, but I can't say for sure because I didn't use an AR-15 spring. As for completion, that should be by the end of the month if all goes well.

Good job, SHA. I don't play HALO (anymore), so I don't recognize it as a shotgun, but I'm sure it'll look just peachy when it's done.

Didn't CH's bolt cycle shells, or did his not eject them, only load them?

The bolt does work. The main problem is that it has some problematic seals that I intend to fix the next time I start work on this gun (Labor Day weekend), basely around the cam pin slot and one portion in the front of the bolt carrier. The unique thing about this design is that the bolt head will always automatically return to its foremost position if nothing is engaging it or preventing it from doing so. I made this improvementfor two reasons: 1) While reading boltsniper's writeups for the SCAR and the FAR, I realized the potential problems from something knocking the bolt head backwards, which would cause in to rotate and not interface with the lugs in front of the chamber. 2) It makes the system more reliable and realistic (although I didn't intend to make it so real-looking and feeling, and it is also a coincidence if it looks at all like the Halo or Halo 2 shotguns), because there is a reduced risk of jamming.

What I do not like about the bolt, though this will not affect its predicted service life unless the problem gets worse, is that it is not completely reliable when the gun is pointed at drastically different angles. Now, I know I won't be using it to aerate my lawn, down crows, or perform the Matrix, but I wouldn't mind some improvement there. Another problem, though I don't know how drastic or insignificant it will become after I install the carrier, is that I will have to move the bolt back and forth one additional time after the mouth of the shell enters the chamber, because there is a tendency for it to rotate sooner than is ideal. I will fix that with a tighter-fitting collar in the bolt carrier, but that will require me to destroy the current one, which is held in place with PVC cement.

Other note:

CH used PVC shells. It is much harder to do the same with brass shells because you are literally using superglue and needle-nose pliers to arrange the moving parts in a case 9/16" in diameter. In fact, the early extractors I had were so prone to breaking I had to coat the entire claw in superglue, let it dry overnight, and then grind down (slowly and carefully) the excess to make it a perfect fit on the shell rims. As for a video, I will try. Please keep in mind that I do not have a video camcorder handy right now, but should I acquire one, I will post the link for the video here. I will also disable comments on YouTube should that become my video host, because I don't want spammers and trolls posting "OMGWTF??/U M4D3 A Fuk1n GuNn th47s 1ll3g4l!!1!!!11!."

Right, the PVC shells were from pics in his boltsniper guns sales thread. My mistake. Although his bolt didn't eject or extract shells, because then he could have never had the shell in picture 14 staying seated in the bolt. So I do believe I am still the second (bolt being #1) to create an extraction and ejection system for brass shells.

Believe it or not, I've still been tinkering with my design. What I need to know is what your planning to do for the carrier dog. CH wanted to use a ramp, but that would be very inefficient to use. Are you planning on using the carrier idea Ronster brought up from the Kriss SMG, where it's basically a ramp connected to the bolt, or are you going with what a real shotgun uses?

NF: Yes, the ramp did seem a bit inefficient. However, the carrier that I use will be dependent upon the design of the lower receiver. Right now, I'm thinking of something like the latter. The carrier will be a piece of PVC (like a thin strip cut from a large-diameter tube, not a complete tube itself), and will have a bent sheet-metal tab going from its rear up towards the bolt. When the bolt is in its foremost position, there will be a notch that the top of this tab can rest in, which will allow the carrier to be in resting position. When the bolt moves back, the tab will be displaced as the notch on the bolt moves away. This will cause the carrier to rise. I apologize for the lack of pictures, but the lower receiver is still kicking my ass. I have recently opted for a FAR-esque trigger using steel rod to prevent buckling and spongy trigger pull. This is far easier than bending a nail or music wire precisely and then finding a way to perch a spring on it that will not obstruct movement, (It is harder than boltsniper makes it look. Probably the most annoying thing thus far.) as in the SCAR.

Sounds functional, and I wish you luck with the ass-kicking lower reciever.

As for the ramp, my current method, as I'm to stupid to fashion a carrier, I've thought of this.



Green = Ramp
Grey = Spring
Yellow = Bolt
Purple = Barrel
Orange = Magtube
Green = Upper Reciever
Black = Lower Reciever
Red = Hole

It's not really that complex. Basically, the ramp would be shallow enough for shells to be pushed up by compressed springs. But, as for the hole in the bottom of the lower reciever, for shells to be loaded, in this case, would be covered by the ramp. But, if the ramp could be slid backwards into the lower reciever and locked like boltsnipers Bolt on the FAR (handle locks in groove), then shells could be loaded, and the gap closed with the ramp when the handle attached to the ramp is released.

Please note that the spring is very large in this picture, and is overkill for the job it would be doing. It would be much smaller, and would push on a 1.2" PVC coupler glued in the middle of the lower reciever, so the rear of the lower reciever could be used for the fire control group.

If this doesn't work, I'm returning to Meaker's ramp idea, to try that.

Unless I overlooked a pin somewhere, there is one problem. The bolt would push the shells back down the ramp when it is moved forward. The ramp has to pivot somewhere to avoid this, and even so, the shells would all be shot out of the mag tube as soon as the ramp moved upwards. There would also be no way to return the ramp to its lower position. Again, if I'm missing something, tell me.
