Cullen Elementary will be closed all summer long due to construction throughout the district. We found out ~ 4 days ago, so we planned to spend Spring CAFF location-hopping to find a new place, hopefully larger for catering to such a large prospective group. We would've told you already, but why bother to report until there's
something to report, right?
SOOOoooo...The Knights+Desert Storm&Guest (who did quite well for a 1st timer, by the way) visited a total of 5 schools yesterday. We played at two of them. We walked onto each campus with no guns, just looking for places that would work (no need to unpack our shit until there was a reason for it). If we found something, we'd look for people/janitorial staff/etc. and once we found no one/found staff to whom we could explain what we were doing, we got out our shit and tried the place. The first school we actually stopped to play at was okay, but it wouldn't have worked out. It was the second school we visited, and it wasn't until the fifth that we found something playable again. And we stayed there the rest of the day (which was nearly the entire second half of the day.)
The place is Sellers Elementary, and it sits one block directly east of Cullen (I'll post an address when I post up location pics this afternoon.)
It's not as "perfect" persay as the grid at Cullen, but there are TWO urban areas on campus, so there is no question that we can find a place for everyone. Even still, both areas should be playable by all in attendance at once with few (if any) issues regarding crowding. And, after looking at the current attendance list, and then assuming that VACC, Talio, and Kuhlschrank will be making it, we're going to have an excess of 30 poeple. It doesn't look like it right now on the list, but Baghead is listed alone, and his clan will have a bundle coming with him, like at
least 5 or six in addition to himself. It'll be full, but the area can handle it.
One consists of
FIVE protables in a t-shape sitting on a flat on one side with some concrete, with a steep but manageable grass hill on the other side. It's an excellent place (though we still like Cullen better) which will be capable of catering to rounds with all participants at once, even with the expected high attendance rate of this year's armageddon.
The second area is the main buildings of the school. There are three long & tall brick buildings with large corridors running their full lengths with the occasional trees, tables, benches etc. There is also one corridor running through them perpendicular to the main corridors. This area will easily be able to hold groups of 40+ all playing at the same time. There are also large areas of grassy field as well as two junglegyms on campus, but with two distinctly different urban areas, we figured that with a pile of trash cans, the place will easily last us all day no matter what sort of numbers arrive.
There is also a small semi-wooded (okay, it's just got more trees than anywhere else on campus, in a smaller area, so it's really just a shady place) on one side of campus next to the parking lot that we didn't try playing in, much less even really look at. But this is the school I attended (they changed it recently, so I didn't know until yesterday about the portables and such) and I can tell you offhand that the spot would be an excellent place to sit down fo lunch and whatnot.
I'll be taking pictures of both areas on campus this afternoon and I'll post them up them for discussion.
EDIT:
Here we go.
The main school buildings are separated by THREE major corridors, plus passage on both ends, and one corridor somewhat off-center running perpendicular to the three main ones.
A look down one of the main corridors;
Another Corridor:
The central, perpendicular corridor:
Next, the urban area consisting of an L-shaped layout of portables. At the main junction of the lines of portables there is a large handicap-accessible ramp that switches back and forth, provinding for obstacles as well as, at some angles, cover. Yes, this means Ray can come too. We were thinking about you when selecting locations. Handicap-accessibility was a big factor in our minds.
So here's an overall view of the front of the portables:
Here's an overall view of the mess of railings in the middle, involving two short sets of stairs towards the left, and the ramps to the right:
Here's the backside of the "L", looking at the ramps & stairs. The ground height drops ~3' here into the trench, but the short wall coming from the concrete comes out and meets the grass where it comes back up:
A view across the hill I mentioned before the edit on this post that goes across the backside of the two portables closest to the camera in the first picture of the location. Again, the hill is entirely manageable, and isn't so steep that one would slide down it. This was taken from the inside corner of the "L":
A view from atop the hill, looking down between portables 1&2:
And lastly, a picture across the front of portables 1&2, looking towards the centerpoint of the area, where the stairs and ramps are:
So that's what we found yesterday. The address of the school is:
Sellers Elementary School
500 N. Loraine Ave.
Glendora, CA 91741
So if nobody has any objections, I think I'll go change the opening pictures of the trailer...
Double EDIT:
I changed the location pictures in the trailer, fixed some of the timing (it got a little off in a few spots) and switched out the first video clip for a different one that looks better. Now, when the video clips start up, you see Cxwq and Hubbard (with others in Background) charging from left to right, and then it switches to Spoon & company charging from right to left, so it's like two opposing armies advancing/charging. Looks pretty badass. The link in my sig is updated if you'd like to take a look.
TRIPLE EDIT (I'm done after this, I promise)...
And what other Eastie am I missing? I'm shooting 2 for 3 right now. I was hoping for more.
I think I'm still shooting (I mean hoping...that wasn't intended, but it probably came out right anyway...) for 4-5 easties. From what I know, Groove, OMC, VACC, Kuhlschrank, and Talio were
really planning to come. The only reason we're looking at two right now is because Groove and OMC are all we've heard from since the "final roll call" began.
Just give it some time, and I'm sure the other 3 will holler at some point.
Heck, they've been a HELL of a lot more active than Spoon has been the last 2-3 months, and his ass LIVES here.
