Oh my god. That thing looks amazing. And Gforce shut up, stop rubbing your vulcan into everyone's faces, and bullshitting about ranges. Splitlip, that is really good that you have figured this gun, which looks really complicated, out without a write up. I have been modding for a year now, and would have had no clue where to start, and would have waited for someone else to post something first. Congradulations on taking the initiative.
I want one bad, but the recon didn't come out in stores near me until late april/early may, so it will be a while. A spring replacement would really help. I guess that if you got a spring 3x as strong, it would increase the ROF to about 1 shot a second, which is still really good for a weapon that I guess might equal gforce's BS ranges.

Okay, so here we go. I've done the following to this:

Removed the air restrictor and it's bracket
Removed 50 Pegs (very annoying - I highly recommend using a sharp razor blade)
New O-ring, makes a perfect seal, not too tight, not too loose)
New lube (O-ring lube, just like FA ordered)

Experimental mod:
removed manual cocking mechanism. Very simple to do. I found that it was an unnecessary section because when you're using the motor, it just disengages. As such, it has no affect on any of the results.

And of course, you've all seen that it's minimized.

I used fresh out of the pack Energizer batteries (I prefer Duracell, but they were out).
I also used stefans, approx. 2 inch, the "Red Rangers" darts. Weighted with 3/0 fishing weights. I picked 50 at random, out of a bag of about 90. Basically only 10 of the darts in this bag had ever even been fired, so there was no bias.
I measured time with my stopwatch.
No crosswind, a shit load of mosquitoes.
I'm in New Jersey, it's flat as hell. No worries there. About 3 feet above sea level, 60% humidity or so. About 80 degrees fahrenheit.

Here's the scale: Two 25ft tape measures
Posted Image

Here's the grouping:

And a closer view: About 19.5 Feet on average
Posted Image

Here's the furthest shot at 24 feet:
Posted Image

The gun shot 21 rounds in 13 seconds, for an average of 1.61538462 darts per second.

Why only 21 shots? The barrel rotator cracked. Split into three pieces. Reparable? Probably. Ridiculous? Very

I do have many detailed pictures of the internals and what they do. I'll be editing them as promised and posting them later.

Definitely not 65 feet average chief.

Every single post about the vulcan makes me want it less. First is 75 foot range. Then its 35 then its 20 with uber modding....

Very strange indeed. *scratches head*

It's a motorized longshot, minus the huge plunger and a fancier clip system in my eyes. I'll see what I can do with it. I'll really have to see where I can take it if I can't fix that rotator.

Everyone thought you'd get 70' out of this gun. After looking at the plunger tube, it's pretty much impossible. Although I'd like to see someone prove me wrong. It doesn't surprise me at all that the gun only gets 20'.

g-force, you are an Effeminate failure.

Wow that is dissapointing. <_< . Not to criticize you splitlip but I think you must have put something in wrong. The video of some kid firing a stock vulcan shows the darts going about 25ft. I want to see more before I give up entirely. Still great job opening it up and doing all those things.

But 3/4ths of the reason the ls is so good is becase of its good range.
With out that 3/4ths or so , its like only 3/7ths as good as the ls.

You must have a bad one somehow. according to this (even its mega angled) His shot 40 with no mods. ***more head scratchin***

My bad, the stock ranges are 30-40 feet. And yes, they are measured. My hallway is 42 feet and shots were landing from 3/4 down to the end. But it doesnt matter to me now because my vulcan moter broke......

edit: I also took the main ar out. now it will not fire at all, even in single fire mode

We'll see. 20 feet at zero degree angle works out to about 50 feet at a 45 degree by the way. Oh, and my times could have been off. I was bit taken aback by the crunching sound my gun was making. And i would not trust that video. He approximates 10 feet in the dark then says that 25+10 is 40.

I did not angle the gun while taking ranges. Those are the real ranges.

Could it be possible that maybe this gun is better with no mods. Perhaps having such a delicate internal structure has made it so it needs no mods, and that variations to the equilibrium of the stock parts hinder it in range and performance....I can't believe I just said that. :)

Yes, i am thinking the same thing. I took out the main ars in my gun and it would not fire, at all.

Don't you hate how the D and F keys are so close together?

I'm having a hard time believing that this gun gets 20' ranges modded. I'm starting to think that Chinese quality control fucked you over. Looking at the internals, this gun looks capable of Nite-finder ranges, or at least Recon ranges. I could see 20' if there was a poor seal between the belt and the plunger tube, but the thing moves forward and seals with the belt... and the plunger tube may not be LS-sized, but it's still decent.

Or another thought: Those 20' ranges are flat ranges. I have NEVER fired a gun flat in a nerf war. Even with guns that are capable of 70+ ranges flat, I still angle my shots. Even if I don't try to, it seems like I'm naturally inclined to fire the gun at at least a 10 degree angle. I'd like to know how far this gun fires when you hold it comfortably and fire it, which would more than likely be angled.

At 20' this gun will not be very applicable for war use. At 50' flat it could actually be useful. I'm sure it's possible to get 50' with proper modification.

Part of the reason you are getting bad ranges is the stefans. I'm not saying your stefans suck, I'm saying, to try your ranges with the sonic micros, I got my vulcan today (you may all glare now) and I did the easy mods, 50 darts chain and peg removable, loaded it with stefans, and found I was getting about 20 feet... So I decided to test the sonic micros, and they achieved around 35 feet. All of these were with some slight angling.
Please do not flame me for ranges, they are estimates, but fairly close estimates.

As far as ranges go:
I believe you Mr Crouse. I also believe splitlip. The answer for the difference is simple. 3/0 is too heavy for the power/amount of air coming out of it. My Magstrike can shoot stock darts farther than Stefans. My old RFR could fire bb weighted stefans farther than 3/0 stefans any day. The Vulcan may only be able to handle heavier weights with a spring replacement.

Ya, My stefans were soft tipped ones, 1/4" of foam glued on top of the weight, but they were a mix of ones weighted with 1 or 2 copper bbs, that's pretty light, but then again my stefans suck, so that could be part of it. Regardless, stock darts seem to work best, I've tried taggers and sucker darts, but sonics out range them by about 5 feet or so also. I've also tried some of my better stefans with acctual domes and same outcome.

Other then what FA_24 said about weighted Stefans there are also other factors to consider. How is the fit in the Chain barrel? Tight or lose? I think having PETG in barrels or even brass will increase the range by probably 10-15'.

I think you guys might be right on that one. Good thing I posted that bit of information. This gives me a glimmer of hope. Come to think of it, remember when I posted that I was getting 15-20 broken, then there was a massive increase when it was fixed? Those were both with the gay sonics. I'll try again with the sonics later.

I have to focus on the fucking rotator right now. And maybe replacing the manual pieces. We'll see.

My stefans fit tight enough that they should fire fairly well, but the way the chains are constructed, there is only about 1/2"-1" of tight fitting barrel on the dart, and the rest is just loose, so you loose any extra pressure left over from the plunger. I agree PETG barrels may help, but would be a pain to install. In my opinion brass is out of the question becase of the added weight, unless you have someone feeding. I have the double chain, where it is 2 chains put together, and it jams a fair amount maybe once or twice per 50 shots, but all you have to do is give the chain a little tug and you're good. In my opinion, it is partly because of the added weight. I am sure once Angel gets a hold of one there will be many mod write-ups.

Angel, have you ordered one yet, or does hasbro not ship to Canada/ are you waiting for them to be in walmart?

Thanks to an anonymous friend. (You know who you are you Sluggy son of a bitch :) )

I was able to pre-order them through Target. They get delivered to my anonymous friend.
Then my anonymous friend ships them to me. The problem is Target is taking their sweet fucking time.
I may end up seeing them in stores before they are shipped to me. In which case I will buy a couple anyway.

I am learning from the basic mods you guys have done so far. I am also learning which pieces need to be reinforced through what is breaking on you guys.

As far as modding one goes. I need to fully understand how one works before I tinker with it.

I am giving all you kiddies a reminder when opening a complicated Nerf gun.
Take internal photos! With something like the Vulcan you will need many photos. From many angles.

Ya, that is why I am hesitant to open mine up, I don't want to waste the thing, I was hesitant enough to open up my longshot, but now I have no problem poping one open to mod. You got to get used to it. If you need one Angel, I am planning on ordering a few from Hasbro again, the ones with 2 sets of chains, for $40+ like $5 each for tax and shipping. (I am using the free shipping thing, but it only took it for $22 to $6 for 2 of them. So if you want 1 let me know, I will send it to you for my costs alone. Also for all of you going, "Why does he need 2 more?" I'm not getting them for myself; my brother and friend both want one.
