How To Make Hollow Stefans (tutorial)

28 November 2009 - 04:26 AM

Ok,
please don't blast me if I got something wrong as all I want to do is put my idea out there!. For a while people have been questioning whether or not the holes on the bottom of stefans caused by hot glue guns do increase accuracy or not. I personally could never center the glue gun properly and seem to cause my darts to fire funny :( anyway after giving this a good thinking, I decided to improve the idea. rather than a small crater at the bottom of the dart what if you could melt a perfectly straight hole right through the dart but leaving say 10mm of solid foam allowing you to glue your weight on the top?

so anyway this is a bit of a tutorial and if you have any ideas on how I can improve feel free to tell me so! anyway ill do my best to show you how I melt my holes through.

Materials needed.

drill press (you'll know what I mean in a minute.)
a nice long nail (thickness is entirely up to you and needs to be at least 2 inches long)
saw, bolt cutters, anything that you can use to cut the nail
tubing/barreling that suits your darts really well (I used PETG)
hot glue gun
hot glue
Stefan dart/s
a lighter (jet lighters work best)

here is the dart before the hole is made

Ok, first up take your nail and cut the top of it I used bolt cutters but you may use whatever you feel comfortable with

now take your cut nail and screw it into your drill press. make sure its in there straight and secure!

now you need to cut some of your tubing/barreling approximately 1 inch long. make sure you cut it as straight as you possibly can! its extremely important! (mine wasn't cut so good and that's my fault. this has quite a large effect on my darts performance unfortunately so make sure you don't make the same mistake that I did)

you need to align your tubing so that the middle is directly below the nail. once you believe you have achieved this go ahead and glue it in place.

now try it out and see if the nail hits the middle of the dart. when you slowly bring the drill with the nail down make a note of how close to the middle it really is. if its slightly off you can either adjust the drilling platform of break the tubing off and re-glue it into place.

now you are almost ready to begin. but first bring your nail all the way down and move the drilling platform up or down to adjust how high and low the nail goes when fully brought down.

when you are finally satisfied with your setup you may now begin. take the Stefan and place it upside down in the tubing.
Posted Image

now take your lighter and heat up the nail. heat it up for about 10-20 seconds.

then quickly push the nail down into the Stefan and bring it back up. remove the dart and...

YOUR HOLE IS DONE ^^
mine was a bit off because the darts i am currently using is a bit too loose for the tubing. so it tends to sit on a angle. but if you use the right stuff you wont have this problem :D

and here is a better centered hole

and there you have it! I admit my write up/tutorial is not perfect and neither are the photos. but I am sure you get the idea and you can now mass produce your own Stefan's with this little idea.when i made this I had no downloads and it took me forever to upload the very few imaged. so compliments would be nice :D

it really does increase accuracy for me. mite be different for you but hey! its a idea. and its open for modifications. if you plan on making a video showing others this idea. please be courteous and include the fact that it was my tutorial that helped you and maybe include the link to this thread for other.

so thank you for reading my thread and if you have any questions feel free to ask!
