You need a power supply to actuate the magnetic field in the solenoid. So, yes, you do.

For Keef's and/or other's benefit, I'll post a diagram of how to wire together a solenoid, switch, and three 9 volt batteries:

It's up to you to figure out how exactly to attach all of the wires, but that at least shows what to connect to what.

That's for a 24V solenoid. Not 12V.

Its your choice if you choose to use electricity with it still, but just a heads up, modding a solenoid is a much smarter idea. And it will aslo give your gun a fast trigger pull. Just add a blow gun too it. I know there's pictures and ways showing you how to do it, just search.

So I know this is really out of character of me, but I found something really cool that I wanted to stick into this thread. For whatever reason I was looking up homemade fire arms or "zip guns" and actually came upon quite a few schematics.

DO NOT BUILD A ZIP GUN!

I feel that goes without saying, but knowing you kids, someone will do it. A zip gun is an actual gun. it shoots real bullets. Not nerf, not paintball, not BB's, not pellets. It shoots "go in one side of you and out the other" bullets.

BUT, the trigger systems are genius and I think if someone were to show up with a little ingenuity they would be able to adapt these designs. So without further ado, here is the link. Look on the left hand side of the screen down toward the bottom, it has plans for a couple of pistols:
