1. Unscrew middle yellow piece in stock.
2. Cut down a piece of 1.5" thin-wall PVC (or anything else with an ID larger than your spring), and trim one end so that it can fit in the stock.
3. Shove a spring in there. I used a full AR-15 spring.
4. You're done!

With a really short Stefan, I got around 30-35' flat. Now all it needs is a better barrel. I'm also really liking the extra weight behind the handle.

When you actuate the slide, the plunger tube (the orange bit that sticks out the back) is working against the spring inside the shell just like a mav. On this, he added a seperate chamber made of pvc which acts abainst the plunger tube externally, after it exits the frame.

Yes, but better. Rubber bands get stretched and brittle over time and snap, springs stay nice and bouncy.

How hard is it to cock?

It's no problem for me to cock, but it is harder than stock, obviously. It's less hard than a NF with handyman spring replacement.

I'd guess the range increase didn't occur because there is no barrel to channel the extra force through. A good barrel, and it would be fine, I am going out on a limb and saying 45-50ft with a better barrel.

I just did a spring stretch and AR removal on mine and got better than 35'. I think the problem you're having is that you aren't using the full compression of the spring since the slide cocking mechanism is still only compressing the distance optimal for the stock spring.

ANd you always have to have the stock on but I like that since it looks comfortable and awesome.

THen I would keep the barrel attachment on for looks a support for the barrel.

Honestly I would do a barrel replacement write up if i had a recon. I live on the VERY east coast and I had THREE recons at my wal-mart.

I hid them behind the firefly's . I WILL HAve a recon or two, by the 3rd and expect a writeup. (unless someone beats me to it.)

It shouldn't matter where you live, cuz I'm more eastern than you. I found it at a Wal-mart. Target does NOT have them.

I found 3 hidden behind some other guns, check behind the other boxes. ANd like umdlancer said, If there's none on the shelf, ask a sales person to check the stockroom for you.

Damn, I wanted to be the first to do this, but the Recon hasn't hit my area yet. I guess great minds think alike, good job!

I think the best way to improve this mod is to cut the PVC in 1/2. Then glue a metal or wooden plate in the middle of the two pieces. But make sure the orange rod that says armed on it when cocked still has an inch before it hits the new plate. Then glue it all back together with a different spring in it. Then you would get the full compression of the new spring.

Or drill two holes in the pvc and insert a metal rod through them.

On a side note, I rigged up a brass barrel (17/32") and new plunger tube (the part with the o-ring) and was getting another 5-10' with the stock spring. My "extra" spring broke my contraption, but I'll try again tomorrow with more metal parts this time.

How does the Recon's spring compare to a Big bad bows or longshots? You could totally add a new spring if you reinforced it. Centurysprings.com would help you find the exact spring needed.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to give this one a shot. I really like the idea.

I'm going to use a much smaller spring, and brace it against the inside of that middle chunk of the stock (with the clip to hold the magazine) to see if that changes anything. I'll post pictures in this thread when that happens.

Did you brace the tubing with anything? Like gluing it to the gun or the stock or wraping it in duct tape?
I would worry that it'd have a tenancy to fly off if it's not secured somehow.
