Actually, cutting coils increases the spring rate.

I've never used tubing cutters. Would sharpening help?

I get my best cuts with a hack saw and a miter box.

Or drill two holes in the pvc and insert a metal rod through them.

On a side note, I rigged up a brass barrel (17/32") and new plunger tube (the part with the o-ring) and was getting another 5-10' with the stock spring. My "extra" spring broke my contraption, but I'll try again tomorrow with more metal parts this time.

It's no problem for me to cock, but it is harder than stock, obviously. It's less hard than a NF with handyman spring replacement.
