Yep... Its that time of year where we at S.C.U.N. hold our annual NIB/Stock/"Low-Tech on-the-spot Modding" Event... and truthfully I should have posted this at least a week ago but I just started back to Work and well I'm not very good at paying attention to this stuff these days. I hope people can still turn up, even with the late notice.

Yes, this is a "Stock Event" similar to a N.I.B. war but not quite as strictly aimed at using a brand new blaster, as it is going back to a time where you couldn't "science" a nerf gun beyond "slap a crayola marker on it"

Like every Stock War We've done, there will be about a half hour of “Field Modding Time” using the most “basic” of nerf modding supplies:

  • Hand tools like Screwdrivers, small hacksaws, pliers, wire cutters, x-acto knives or boxcutters, leatherman tool, hand drills, etc.
  • Electrical Tape/Duct Tape etc
  • Most Adhesives (includes Epoxy Putty, Super Glue, Plumber's Goop)
  • Rubber Bands/Mini bungee
  • Crayola Barrels or similar objects like those Jägermeister tubes as barrel material.
  • a 2k Pump tube is an acceptable way to mod something for Arrows.
  • Electronic mods to flywheel guns are allowed, this ranges from basic higher voltage batteries all the way to full motor replacement.

NO PVC or other Pipe/Tubing WILL BE ALLOWED.

Naturally, there will still be some safety bans, IE no making titans shoot micros. Pistol splats and all variants are not allowed, because they perform on par with modded guns bone stock. But pretty much anything else is fair game. Bring as many or as few blasters as you'd like, by leaving the ammo stock, we should have a fairly level playing field whatever you bring. Also you're allowed to bring any blasters that are already modded to these specifications, be it because you did it for one of the previous stock wars, or felt like modding in advance.

NOTE: If you want to make sure you have maximum recovery of your own stock ammo do something to CLEARLY IDENTIFY IT AS YOURS  I.E. I use neon pink marking stickers on my Vortex Discs and neon Pink sharpie dots on my Rival Balls.

We'll start this earlier than usual, so that modding time doesn't cut too much into our playing time, so try to show up by 9:30 AM

The Date is SET as JANUARY 16th

Location:
Rolling Hills Park
2700 Maple

Fullerton CA 92835

Unlike our previous location for this annual event we don't have restrooms or a conveniently located pizza place... but we do have several shops/restaurants (including a The Hat) surprisingly close to the location... and also pretty much the only Games Workshop Store in the region (so if you like makin' minis like I do, you may be making a trek over there at lunch or after the war) so I suggest you bring monies and or food and have everything you need to stay well hydrated. Hope to see you guys there, I know that I got the actual formal post up late and that may cause conflicts for some and that's a bummer.

Its that time of year where we at S.C.U.N. hold our annual NIB/Stock/"Low-Tech on-the-spot Modding" Event. Once more we shall gather at our Southernmost Reliable Location in Corona to goof around with barely modded blasters and shoot each other with stock ammo and enjoy pizza for a fair amount of hours. Its fun for the whole family.

So, yes, this is a "Stock Event" similar to a N.I.B. war but not quite as strictly aimed at using a brand new blaster, as it is going back to a time where you couldn't "science" a nerf gun beyond "slap a crayola marker on it"

  • Electrical Tape/Duct Tape etc
  • Most Adhesives (includes Epoxy Putty, Super Glue, Plumber's Goop)
  • There is an outlet and I'll bring an extension cord so you can use Hot Glue if you wish.

The Date is SET as JANUARY 4TH

Location:
Horsethief Canyon Park
Shotgun Trail Rd.
Corona, CA 92883

The Park has Restrooms. Nearby there is a shopping center with a Pizza Hut, A Subway and a grocery store. We usually just make a group pizza order together and send a small detachment to pick things up. so bring cash for Pizza, or be ready to take care of getting other food for yoursef.

The Stitchmanta

27 July 2010 - 10:49 PM

Say hello to the Stitchmanta, a Spot on (in terms of scale and curve), but very Stylized Replica for the Top Shell of the Nerf Manta Ray.

Posted Image

"But Bags, why would you make a Manta Ray out of Burlap?" you ask? Well, for one I loved the Visual Style of the Movie 9 and I love Manta Rays. Why not fuse the two together?

The Story goes something like this:
One of my strongest areas as an artist is as a Sculptor, and I tend to produce work that relates to toys, either by making toys, or exploring the shapes of said toys. During my intermediate Sculpture class last fall I did an entire series of pieces themed to Nerf Guns, with the highlight revolving around Mantas.

As an abstract object, the Manta Ray is quite visually interesting, and I set out to fabricate unique takes on them with different textures and materials, many of them failed miserably. This eventually lead me to Resin and Burlap forming what I like to call the Stitchmanta.

First off with any Resin/Fiberglass project if you want to match the shape of an object you need a mold or basic form to make sure the floppy resin soaked fabric will stay in that shape while it cures. Sadly, the only stock manta shell I had handy was already in a poor state, thus I did the only thing I could.

Make a new one out of Sheet Acrylic.

Posted Image

Using a Template I traced from the half of a stock manta I then set to work matching the curve. I did this by hand with a Heat gun and a lot of patience. From there I had to make quite a few more:

Posted Image

^most of these didn't survive the fist batch of Resin Work due to miscalculations on my part about protecting the "forms" from the resin, the ones I'm currently using are mostly Solid Blue actually.

Anyway, From there I was ready to build up my Structure Material which for these, was Burlap.

Using the same paper template I made the plastic forms from, I cut out pieces of burlap and sewed them together, I also used some other Tchotchkies made of brass to add some additional flair.

Posted Image

After they're stitched together I hand painted on some "stock manta ray-esque" stripes with India ink.

The Next step was the process of laying down the resin, I used Polyester laminating Resin for the primary coats and fished it with a layer of Finishing Resin to force the whole thing to Kick.

I don't have any pictures of this process, since resin is nasty stuff and not good to keep a camera near. Its also not something your friends want to stand close to you doing and shoot pictures of. Like I was saying earlier due to some poor planning on my part about half my "forms" fused to these prototypes and failed miserably.

Only One of the burlap ones survived after I'd made a lot of changes to improve the way I was laying down the resin and also because I reinforced it from behind with a layer of Fiberglass, which is what I intend to do with All my future ones, the final result after some sanding and a layer of clear coat is what you see at the start of this thread.

Since the end of that quarter I've been wanting to revisit this project and make more, but right after I finally finished up the "survivor" my College Banned the use of Resin, (because stupid people work in it without a respirator, and that supposedly can give you brain cancer and a lot of other horrible diseases) Thus, I've been biding my time for an opportunity and I finally have one.

My Grandfather Makes large scale RC airplanes, and works with fiberglass from time to time. I'm scheduling a week with him where I can go up to his workshop and do a few batches of these badboys, Naturally I'll be selling them.

In Preparation, I picked up a bunch more burlap and the other materials I needed, and even Custom Dyed some additional colors:

Ok so Once again SCUN's gonna actually post one of our Normal Monthly Wars on the Public Forums... Because well, we hear there's fresh blood in SoCal and we'd love to let you guys shoot at us.

Anywho, the meat of the matter:
Where:
Santiago Park
E Memory Lane

When: June 26th, 10 AM-whenever

We'll Meet at The Second entrance on Memory Lane, which is near the Santiago Creek Wildlife & Watershed Center, and is at the hillside we play Slideball on.

Location Map:
http://maps.google.c...=h&z=19&iwloc=B

What to Bring:
Your Own Blasters/Darts
A Good Attitude
Food Monies / or a packed lunch (we'll either go to the nearby Mall's food Court or one of the other restaurants in the nearby shopping centers)
Water and Sunscreen aren't a bad idea either

ALSO:
If you're getting dropped off at the location and picked back up later, pack light.
If your nerf blasters are Painted Black or other realistic colors, they will be in need of some sort of Neon for the day, we'll have pink duct tape, if you don't want to use that... you're on your own.
We'll be using our typical "Ages 12 and Up Only" Rule.

Banned Blasters: Same as this year's Geddon Read that thread

That pretty much covers it, see ya there hopefully.

'geddon 'leven Date Set July 10, 2010

04 April 2010 - 05:09 PM

Ah yes, once again it is the time where we plan SoCal's Big-Ass-Shiny-Awesome nerf event we all know as Armageddon (or Armegeddon, if you're an idiot like me who misspells recap video title cards) Anywho, per tradition we're kicking off discussion of this event early thus allowing those brave souls who dare traverse long distances and spend large sums of money to come have a good time while shooting some very silly people for a weekend, can purchase Plane tickets for somewhat less money, arrange lodging, etc.

And thus begins the important information:
After much Discussion, we here at SCUN, your Friendly SoCal Nerf Collective, plan to Host this war on o

July 10<-----Date is set.

This year 'geddon will once again be held in the fine City of Glendora, California at a now long-running SoCal site: Cullen Elementary and its adjacent park Ole Hammer. if attendance is high or if it's group consensus we'll play Glendora High School after lunch.

Addresses:
Cullen Elementary School
440 N. Live Oak Ave
Glendora, CA 91741

Ole Hammer Park
440 Right Next Door Blvd.
Glendora, CA 91741

Glendora High School
1600 E Foothill Blvd.
Glendora, CA‎ 91741

Time for the war will be a little more lax than Recent Armageddons, We'll plan to start Nerfing around 10-10:30 ish, so try to get there by around 9:30ish but don't sweat it if you're running late. we'll break for lunch after a couple rounds, and the war ends when it ends, typically this is sometime around 3-5 when many of the attendees no longer feel like they can move.

Things to Consider when Preparing for 'geddon 'leven:

The Weather - In the Summer out here, its really really hot, by a string of bad luck the last three Armageddons have been on the hottest day of the year (even though they took place on different dates) and generally temperatures in the 100+ range. You're going to want to bring Sunscreen, Light Colored Clothing, and a large amount of fluids: Water and even Gatorade are always wise choices, Energy drinks like Monster n such tend to dehydrate you faster and that's no bueno. Dehydration and Heat Stroke are not uncommon things to happen to 'geddon attendees who push themselves to hard without thinking.

Nerf Equipment
-Eye Protection is a Must, if you show up without any, you may be subjected to wearing the speed racer helmet of shame, at least as a joke until loaner goggles are provided. If you are over 18 and don't wish to wear eye protection we won't stop you, but it's at your own risk.
-You are expected to bring your own Operational nerf blasters and a back-up or two, everyone should have at least one Spring Pistol (pistol splats are Ok) as we'll be playing some pistol only rounds.
-You are also expected to bring your own ammo (be it darts, balls, Missles arrows etc.) Don't bring any intentionally Dangerous Homemade darts (I.E. Pointed tips, exposed weights, over weighted micros) its just a dick move.
-Its your responsibility to recover your personal items at the end of rounds, I suggest you do something to clearly identify your darts.
-Nerf, and other brand foam swords are allowed, (these include PVC/Pool Noodle Blowgun swords) but homemades must match(or be shorter than, but not thinner than) the dimensions of a Mashoonga sword. Nerf Warlock Axes are allowed, but cannot be used as Dart Blocking devices, instead they are threaded like taking a gun hit. Players must be carrying some sort of blaster besides a melee weapon.

The Banlist (there may be exceptions to some parts of this list on a Case by Case basis, but don't rely on that, bring a back-up that isn't)
*Any blaster painted completely Black or in some other realistic fashion (if that happens to be what you tend to use, prepare to have neon pink duct tape placed on it, and for many of us to call your gun Gay until it has something neon on it)
*All Homemade blasters that are not of the +bow or Snap Variety
*Single Barrel Dart shooting (this includes the use of a turret): Titans, Roto Rockets, SM5ks, Jobars and Cobras, Pump-replaced Big Blasts or Signal Launchers. (shotgun, or Alternative ammo versions are ok)
*Nerf Marauder Long Swords
*LARP-style Boffers and homemade foam weapons exceeding the dimensions of a Mashoonga
*Any Blaster or Melee weapon may be banned by the SCUN High Council the day of the event if it proves to be too powerful/dangerous

Non-Nerf Equipment - As mentioned above its recommended you wear light colored clothing, and you may want to bring a change of clothes as well. Due to the nature of this war and the amount of time you'll be on your feet, make sure to wear shoes you'll be comfortable wearing and running around in for an entire day. If you feel compelled to wear camouflage, please limit it to One Article of clothing.

Age Restriction - Like last year's Armageddon, this war will have the same Age Restriction of 12 years old and over, this is mainly a safety precaution.

Conduct
-Bring a good attitude: Don't be a Dick, be a Dude.
-Shady tactics like not counting hits, counting in behind opposing players, and close range shots when a barrel tap is possible, etc will not be appreciated, don't be surprised if it also leads to some sort of in-round retribution either.
-Its also wise to not talk like you're on X-box Live, or to refer to Darts as "bullets"
-Pick Up after yourselves at every location; we've kept a good relationship with the Schools and the City by doing our best to not leave a bunch of crap behind, last year...there was a lot of trash left behind at GHS, to help avoid that I'll be bringing trash bags.

Miscellaneous
*Gameplay rules will be discussed AT the war. There's no reason to discuss anything like that here in the thread, because we will be going over it again at the war anyway.
*If you will be dropped off at this event and will need a ride between locations or to lunch, Please do what you can to make ride arrangements beforehand and pack light; don't bring a large box of blasters if you don't have space in a car for them, bring only what you need.
* If you're interested in attending but need a place to stay for the weekend of the war, there should be several Local nerfers out here willing to give you somewhere to crash, unfortunately I'm not one of them, as what space I would have available is taken by other members of my local group.
*Pokemans - be ready to show dems

I'm sure there's some things I missed here and there but this pretty much Covers it, Please provide feedback about what dates work for you so that we can hopefully set the date before the end of the month.

Bags - Supreme Dance Commander of Southern California Unified Nerf Givin' out the order for fun.
