Yes, you could, and to be honest the main reason I did it this way was because these were the materials on hand. If it's more cost effective, go ahead and buy one. However, this way is more suitable for warmer climates, and is only padded where you want it to be, and as much as you want it to be.

When you fling the blaster like that how do you make sure you're not going to snap that plastic lever in half? Is it reinforced in any way?

I have slinged/slang/slung? the blaster this way many times since I got it, and there are no signs of stress on the plastic. While it may have adverse effects long term, the lever has a degree of flex to it that keeps it from snapping. The only problem I have had so far is that the lever seems to have bent to the side, but there are no stress marks on the plastic. It seems it was made with this in mind, even though the instructions make no mention of it.
