You know how on most nerf air guns, there are the little button the trigger depresses when you pull the trigger that lets the air out? What is that little button called? Where can I get something like this mechanism for a homemade? If not, then what are some alternatives for a more ergonomic ball valve? Thanks.

That is what is called a Back-Pressure airtank found in blasters such as the Hornet, Big Salvo, and a handful of more recent blasters whose names escapes me.  I believe you can find a similar set up in certain kind of exhaust valves.

This link is the quickest example of a homemade "back pressure" firing system.

As for a more ergonomic ball valve, I'm sure there's a few creative ways you can work around them if you don't mind having fugly as a feature potentially.  Here's something that might get the ole think muscles a whirlin'.  I've always wanted to do something similar considering how cheap it would be to make something similar.

what are some alternatives for a more ergonomic ball valve?

The answer to this question depends on whether you are using a pump as your pressure source, or a reservoir. If you're just using a pump then you can use almost anything because you don't have to cutoff your supply line when you fire.

Directional control valves (3-port)

Push-button valves (2-port or more)

Relief valves

Slide valves (you may want to add a spring return)

Blowguns (you can buy these with a pistol grip)

And more will all work

The little critters of nature, they don't know that they're ugly. That's very funny, a fly marrying a bumble bee. I told you I'd shoot, but you didn't believe me. Why didn't you believe me?

HI PraisinBran. Thank you for your reply. I think I'll go with the creative way. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thank you for the reply. I am just wondering what it means to cutoff the supply line when you fire? I am new to homemade and modding, sorry about that.

If you are using a much higher capacity source of pressurized air such as a paintball tank or a reservoir that you don't want to empty when triggering the back-pressure tank, then you need a type of valve that does more that just open itself to atmosphere.

alright, your talking about the blast button on what is called a "back pressure tank" by the nerf community, a "back pressure tank" is just a QEV (quick exhaust valve) inside an airtank with an integrated blast button, if your converting to a reservoir (HPA or LPA) you can input a source directly into the back of the tank by cutting off the button and using an external 2/3 valve. a QEV when the blast button is pressed opens a diaphragm inside the QEV which opens the tank to the outlet dumping the air while sealing off the inlet
