What other hobbies are you engaged in where you make/craft/modify things? 

 

I know there are a ton of people in this community that build amazing things outside of the Nerf hobby, and I wanted to give them an opportunity to share that on NH.  Post pictures of your work and/or your workshop, tell us a little about it, and if it relates to nerf or has any overlap be sure to mention that . Obviously if you make cool things professionally, we want to hear about that too. 

 

You aren't required to only post about your own hobby, feel free to reply to other people's posts and ask them questions about their hobby or their work.

I used to build lightsabers.  Yes, I'm a huge fucking dork.

I cannibalized a couple of the widgets from this for other builds, but this was my first saber hilt, I built it in 2001 or so with help from NH user The Fred, who I started the LGLF with a year later.  It's kinda similar to building SNAPs.  You wander aimlessly around a hardware store looking for cool looking tubes that will probably fit together.  This one is mainly made out of a sink tailpiece (also a good crossbow plunger tube replacement) and some thinwall PVC.  The design above is one I got from this ancient website but there's so many other places you can find instructions now it's ridiculous.
 
I've also done some fancy knotwork with paracord.  Here's a hiking stick I've worked on

I learned how to do the spiral hitching from Frayed Knot Arts but Paracord Guild has a good tutorial. The rest is just different kind of Turk's Head knots.  There are a million different places online that show how to do a Turk's Head, but it didn't really click for me until I found this article.  It's much easier to work from one of those templates than do the over/under counting you see in most youtube videos.

I am a little bit into bowmaking, cant show you though because they all broke or failed. And i make my own arrows because its cheaper.

I also made different atlatls and some atlatl darts, an atlatl is a spear throwing device that basically make your arm longer and it hooks into the back of the darts. These are a basic atlatl and a dart:

Im a welder and metalworker by trade, but there's not much work around here for that anymore so now I just do it in my free time and projects for people when they ask (feel free to ask).

I build model aircraft. I've been doing it for quite a few years, and flying wings are among my favorites. I also build racing multirotors and aerial video multirotors.

+1 for model aircraft, unfortunately these are the only photos I have uploaded right now. There was a stupid gag on Reddit where people were ducttaping knives to their quads... so that's why there is a fucking sword.

 

Semi-related note, I'm a licensed private pilot so sometimes I fly for real.

Cosplay has become a family event but I sat in the background at the spring Salt Lake City comic con (Fan X) this year to focus on supporting my sisters build. She's spent an entire year hand embroidering details into her custom sewn Rapunzel dress and came to me to get the $1,000+ of hair extensions to glow. After failing with EL wire and fiber optic strands (wrong shade of white/yellow and too dim) we found a winner with LED stripping. I crammed 77' of it into her 5'6" of hair. It's powered by a 3s lipo and the hidden dimmer switch allows it to actually fade and throb when she sings. She's also pulled her husband (flynn) and my parents (mother Gothel and the ruffian Mime) into the crazy. I got to hang back to manage the remote controls to the puppet lizard I also built for her (Pascal). It sits on her shoulder. The head moves up/down left/right. the mouth opens and closes and the eyes look left and right. It runs on a separate 3s lipo. Both batteries have voltage monitors on them for safety.

 

We won dominated our way to first place in the masters division at this year's spring comic con (Fan X) and will be making an in costume appearance at an event for sick kids this weekend.

I used to build steampunk-themed watches and belt buckles, along with other random buckles.  I've been so busy with nerf and school that I haven't touched them in years, though.  This is one of the better examples, but you can see others here.

 

Also, holy crap, Pants and Schmee, those props are impressive!

Back in the day I used to build homemade water guns. I've gotten back into this lately, though the new one I built this year hasn't worked so well and I intend to re-purpose it. I'm planning another one which would completely avoid the faults of my newest one.

One homemade water gun I built that I'm particularly proud of I called SuperCPS.



This one worked nicely, but I broke part of it by trying to upgrade it. I never bothered to fix it, though I might now.

My most powerful one I called Supercannon II. Not practical for actual water fighting in any way, but it's extremely powerful and gives a good buck when shot, especially when the nozzle is removed so you have a 1.5" diameter water jet.

Made a stool out of mahogany and mahogany-family woods (don't remember some of the exact names) using no metal, just wood joinery.

I'm actually trying to get back into nerf a bit, fell out for a while but with summer coming up I'll hopefully have time for it, and will try to make it to some local events in the Bay Area.

That's how I build most everything. I'm not much for "planning".

My non-nerf hobbies mostly involve sculpting air, or creating the tools to do so. Amusingly enough, I started homebuilding nerf because I already had the parts and tools around from making musical instruments out of PVC (not showing a PVC flute, they're sorta boring. It's a tube with holes).

 

A recent project: a tenor banjo, tuned celtic. I scratch built the neck, and made the pot out of a salad bowl from Goodwill. The resonator is a dollar store pie tin. Works fine, I've used it at a couple gigs.

 

Anglo-Saxon lyre. The sides are bent oak, I think.

 

One of my "wander around the hardware store" projects, a waterphone. (You know the squeaky/screechy sounds in The Matrix? One of those, but it can be used for a variety of effects. I made this track right after I built it as an experiment).

 

A lot of what I make is somewhat intangible, and this is my workshop.  Ambient, orchestral, and sometimes I combine the two. I compose like I build...I'll wander around until something catches my eye (ear?) and I'll stick it on something else.

I don't have good pictures, but I also-also do woodworking and amigurumi. My interests shift around a lot, and I never have gotten a ton of time to do physical-world projects, so most of my stuff is digital and/or partially complete.

I saw your giant risk board and instantly fell in love. Have you ever done Axis and Allies boards? I'm hoping to get back into wargaming this summer, specifically Axis and Allies, DnD, Conquest of the Empire, and other super nerdy goodness. I also play MTG, but not super intensely.

I haven't, but my brother has an A&A itch he's trying to get me in on. That particular one was a much longer project than I'd prefer to take up again (basically did it to teach myself Inkscape; ideally I could use Illustrator instead as it's worlds better. Even just regular AutoCAD would probably have been easier for me), but I'll probably turn something out someday.
 
ED: Found this, which does for A&A basically what the map I used (with the author's permission) did with risk but and hasn't been prettyified yet. I'd probably use that or make a full-version A&A as a base (IIRC, doesn't A&A have, like, whole separate games for each theater of the war?).
