ARMAGEDDON XVI: 2015

Date:
27 June 2015

Time:
9:00 to 4:00+
(Arrive around nine; people like to chat before the war. We'll try and start running rounds by 9:45 at the latest.)

Location:
Stanton Elementary School
725 S Vencino Dr
Glendora, CA 91740

Use this link for a custom map for the site, and possible backups.

Here's an event link on Facebook. People not registered on NH are welcome to join; the more, the merrier.

FAQ

Where and when?
The war is 27 June, from 9:00 to whenever (usually 4:00, but later is not impossible). Location data is available above.

Darts?
Slugs and safer darts only. No metal is preferred but I understand that to maximize attendance while keeping it safe I need to keep this restriction more open. If you do make slugs, use #6 washers and not #8 washers. Use Ryan McNumbers' excellent guide available here if you plan on making slugs. If you use larger ammo, like megas or similar, keep them soft-tipped by the same guidelines as above.

Who?
Everyone is welcome to come, veterans and newcomers alike. I'm not going to outright ban people younger than 13, but if you plan on bringing someone who is, you are responsible for them all day and you are especially responsible for them remaining safe (hydrated and wearing eye protection). I will be running this war with the assistance of others (including, but not limited to, Ryan and Apollo256).

What isn't allowed?
With dart restrictions, there isn't as much of a need for blaster regulations. Don't bring Titans shooting micro darts because that's just ridiculous. I and other war council advisors will spot-ban things if you are lasering dudes from a million miles away.

Blaster rules:
HOMEMADE AIRGUNS: Case-by-case basis. It is highly recommended that you talk to me beforehand (send me a PM or something).

TITANS: You may use them if they fire missiles (stock or Draconis or whatever) or balls. They must not be firing darts, of any size.

LBB/4B/UMB/SIMILAR: You may use them if they have the functional stock OPRV.

SUPER SOAKERS/SIMILAR: Do not bring them. If they shoot darts, they're too powerful. If they shoot water, people get mad.

SCEPTORS: If you want to use a Sceptor, make it colorful. Make it look as little like a paintball gun as possible. Wrap the tank in denim or something. If you replace the tank or pump, the OPRV must be kept at the same pressure and the tank volume may not be made any larger (stock is about 800cc).

SUPERMAXX 2000/5000/9000: Do whatever. I hope you don't blow up your tank.

MELEE WEAPONS: Don't bring anything larger than these (Mashoongas).

SHIELDS: Hits on shields count as hits on you if you plan to use them. I'm nostalgic enough to say that Manta Rays count as actual shields against 1/2" darts, though.

Anything else?
1.) To stop a round for safety reasons, yell out the word "HOLD". If you hear someone call "HOLD", STOP PLAYING IMMEDIATELY. At any time during a round, anyone can call "Hold", which will temporarily stop that round. Players should repeat the call of Hold so that all other players hear, until the round stops completely. If a pedestrian is walking through the field, if a player is injured or if there is some other threat to personal safety, you are obligated to call hold. You can call a hold to pause the game and sort out some issue that is not a matter of personal safety, but do not abuse it.
2.) No barrel taps allowed. Barrel taps are how you absolutely gouge someone with a brass barrel and take out a chunk of skin. Barrel taps are how you break the barrel and bushing off your blaster. You can shoot them from point-blank, or you can ask them to take the hit. Don't touch them with your blaster.

What gametypes?
Expect to play some carpe testiculum and related gametypes. There will probably be some quick-run deathmatch as well, to suit those people like Gears with a bloodlust that knows no bounds. Last year, speed rounds and freeze tag were big hits, so those will make another appearance. There will be minimal team captain team picking to keep downtime short.

Anything else?
Bring lots of water. I'll probably end up picking up a pallet of water bottles as backup but it does get hot and you will probably be running around so expect to need to drink something.
Bring lots of sunscreen, because no one wants a sunburn now or skin cancer later.
There are a lot of places to eat nearby. Traditionally, people eat at The Hat for lunch, which is conveniently about four blocks away from the war site.
Bring comfortable shoes. You will be running around.

If you have specific questions or concerns, PM me, or post them here, or whatever.

Probably will be at this one. Still have to figure out how to also hit up APOC and hopefully there's a big midwest war this year too.

I'll be trying to make it out. Hopefully things go well.

If anyone has an Ultimator and stock rockets, please plan on bringing them. If I can swing it, we'll be playing a fan favorite from my homeland.

I'm going to second the request on Ultimators for this war. Ultimate Core Penetration sounds like truly excellent times.

As it stands the war is about two months out. Plane ticket prices tend to dip lowest around six weeks before the date, so if you were considering flying out for this, you have some more time to decide. Ryan is likely going to be in attendance and hopefully will put up an order form for purchasing one of their fine homemade blasters.

On Facebook, someone asked if the war site was handicap-accessible. It's a school, and given the size of the war, we will be using mostly the concrete areas, so yes, the space should be accessible to those with limited mobility. If you have more specific questions, feel free to post here.

Everybody please make sure to bring a suitable pistol/sidearm, like a NF or something comparable, if you will be playing Ultimate Core Penetration.

UCP is played with one Ultimator per team, with everyone else using speedloader'd or comparable pistols. If you give me some time, I may be able to have a loaner or two, but it's a pretty solid idea to have one of your own.

If you intend to play, please bring a suitable pistol. I'm not going to allow Rainbow pistols or similar. Basically, don't replace the plunger tube with anything.
Suitable entails:
- Speedloader (no hoppers, no RSCBs, no turrets unless it was already on the blaster) or stock barrel mechanism.
- Stock plunger tube. No replacements.
- Plunger-tube-blasters only. No Panthers, no flywheel blasters.
- Those are the key points. If you have specific questions, ask them here, in chat, or via PM.

Zaxbys will be attending as well.

I'm excited. Armageddon is a great place for people to begin their NIC experience.

Just a ponderance... Does the vigilon count as a "speedloader pistol"?

Technically, a speedloader pistol refers to a homemade pistol equipped with a speedloader. I'm not sure what games will be played, but a vigilon might work I guess.
I won't be able to make it out this year guys. I will be on vacation in Hawaii with my family on the 27th. Hope you guys have a good war!

I'm glad to hear it.

Generally, in the NIC, a speedloader refers to a loading system for a blaster with a coupler mounting; it's two barrels glued together so when one shot is fired, the barrel can be flipped around and the other, loaded, barrel is now ready to fire. But yes, you can use the Vigilon in the rounds that require a speedloader pistol. I don't consider it very different than a Maverick/Strongarm or whatever.

To answer more general questions, no swappable-clip-fed blasters. If it has a fixed turret with six or fewer shots, like the Maverick, or a fixed clip with six or fewer shots like the Vigilon, then it'll be fine to use.

You'll be missed, but have a good vacation. Hopefully you can make it out to a war up here some other time.

Okay, we're two weeks off the war. Time to settle plans and get ready. A few reminders.
  • Like last year, we'll be playing with dart safety regulations. No hard-glue-tipped darts. Slugs are great and easy to make. Silicone dome darts are harder to make but definitely allowed. Stock darts are fine.
  • If you plan on playing Ultimate Core Penetration, please make sure you bring a pistol that will be allowed. That means stock plunger tubes, no hoppers, no RSCBs, no homemade pistols, no flywheel blasters, just something basic like a Nite Finder with a speedloader or a Strongarm. You can use a Vortex blaster as long as it has a clip with six shots or fewer.
  • Bring plenty of water. We're having a cool June here for some reason but it's totally reasonable to expect it to be ninety on the war day and we will be running around a lot. I'll bring some extra water like I did last year and there are drinking fountains around the site but please make sure there's something to quaff between rounds.
  • We're going to try and expedite team picking this year. I'm going to buy two packs of playing cards, with each pack having a different backing color. When you get to the war, you'll get a numbered card (e.g. 4 of spades, with a blue back pattern). We'll set up teams for rounds with things like evens vs. odds, or spades vs. clubs vs. hearts vs. diamonds. If it isn't working we'll switch back to regular methods but hopefully it means that we'll get in a few more rounds of play throughout the day.
  • I want to make sure everyone is having fun. If something is bothering you or someone is being a dick, just let one of the Experienced War Staffers (e.g. Zorn's Lemma, Apollo256, Groove, myself) know and we'll do our best to remedy it.
Looking forward to seeing as many people there as possible. Remember: this war turns sixteen this year, which means that if it were a person, it could drive itself to Armageddon.

For the Ultimate Core Penetration round, would an Ultra Match Firestrike be ok? I'm thinking the one I brought to the last war.

It's not my war, so I don't mean to step on any toes, but I figure I'm the authority on this gametype. I am preliminarily going to allow it, but you have to fire it upside down. I'll pass final judgement (for my authority level) when we have more info/when I see it perform.

"Ultra Match" basically just means high accuracy by means of a countersunk barrel. this term has been around for awhile, even if yes, I was the one who named it.

There is a rough criteria of how accurate it should be, but nothing official. It's 5 ring human target 80'@ if<150 fps, 100'@ 180 fps and 120'@ if>230 fps.

It's a stock PT and 21kg's of twin springs, a brass barrel, airtight seal, and OMW unleashed solid plunger rod, a recoiling spring assembly at the head of the PT (so the plunger head can go as fast as you want) and a steel spring plate. I also have a 12Kg firestrike and a couple of modded brass Sharpfires that are slower if this is too hot to maintain a good game balance for UCP.

In all respect, I was concerned Langley, so I asked, sorry.

"It's not my war, so I don't mean to step on any toes, but I figure I'm the authority on this gametype. I am preliminarily going to allow it, but you have to fire it upside down. I'll pass final judgement (for my authority level) when we have more info/when I see it perform."

Sublimedom777, Nono, you can be up front with me on what to use, your not stepping on my toes. Respect is why I asked, but I somehow always seem to rub people the wrong way, not on purpose.
