As far as melee weapons, our game rules state that pretty much anything made of socks is acceptable. We always carry at least four of the standard sock "grenades" and sometimes a sock balled up with a long string on the end for swinging. A few of us use homemade swords.
My melee weapon of choice is the blowgun sword. If your rules allow blowguns, it's one hell of a weapon to have. Few Nerf guns can match the range and accuracy of a blowgun in the hands of a skilled user. The blowgun sword basically consists of a tube shrouded in thick padding and then covered in a few socks with the ends cut off. You can shoot and hit with it. I'll never forgot the look on this one kid's face when I tagged him from about 50 feet the very first time I used it.
Here is a picture of one I made:
Normally I have an onboard dart carrier for faster reloading but I can't seem to find it.

Still, i can;t wait to get my hands on a shield set, so i can do my usual "chuck sword at zombie looking to charge" then riot shield my way to the sword.
Bro, definitely use a sword, they rule. And maybe a blowgun as well, they can be very deadly. And hurt, a lot.

Blowguns rock. I always thought they sucked, then I put a micro in sch 40 1/2 in pvc. It went an eaay 50 feet. With amazing accuracy!

I just want to point out on benefit of carrying as many weapons as I did. If an ally ran out of ammo or had a gun jam I have them covered.
This is why my entire team carries "standard magazine" (that means 6-round mags, drum mags, soon those long mags and mini drums too, not stuff like the Magstrike) fed Nerf blasters; if one of us runs out of ammo somehow, we can just hand off extra magazines. Still allows lots to fall back on, but without the added weight of having extra guns. Plus having lots of similar guns means that if we DO hand off a gun to someone, they basically know how to use it immediately. I've never used an RF20, not exactly sure how it works. Definitely wouldn't want to figure out on the battlefield.

Back on topic HvZ. I will be playing this next year at Mizzou and I was wondering how you stay safe doing day to day activities. Especially showering.
Edit: I guess I was not completely clear you should NOT use airsoft guns for nerfing activities. Especially when doing HvZ as it is generally played on a school campus.

Keep some extremely tiny pistol in your backpack or trapper. or even your pocket.

Also upon giving it a second look the springs are weaker and smaller than I remember and the pt's are smaller so yeah you would probably only get 80s-100s with it max.
But once again back on topic (because I really don't want this to turn into an argument of whether or not to use airsoft in nerf when most of us already know the answer is no) what do you do when going to the shower? Do you just take a loaded nerf gun with you into the shower?

@Busta and Cheez I was not condoning using an airsoft gun. I do not feel that I am a L33t loser (I wonder what the current filter for that is). I was more explaining the reasons it is a very bad idea to use one.

If you add ARs from an old gun, it doesn't hurt anymore than a night-finder.

I would like to agree with death by cheez the Stampede will be excellent for HvZ. Not for hiding or concealing but for missions. As long as it gets decent range, it will be easy and quick to reload and will not require priming. I can just smell the hoards of dead zombies already.

As much as I prefer using Nerf blasters, balled-up socks (or marshmallows if that's how your school is playing) are always good to have in case of emergencies.
