Rapid fire weapon and a melee weapon. I've made it to last man using a melee weapon. Though only do melee if you're very agile.
I thought melee in zombies was a bit unfair due to never running out of ammo with a melee. Oh well, my suggestion is a Raider. Raiders in HvZ are absolutely whup ass.
Still haven't beat Foam Ninja in a sword fight

Recon/Raider/Longstrike, perhaps modded to shoot taggers for more accurate shots but then the drum mag could jam up quite bad (never used taggers in the drum). If modded to shoot taggers and using stock magazines, be sure you are in a decent group to cover you while you reload, obviously don't separate from your group or you're screwed. Take out the locking mechanism for the magazines, and practice/remember how many darts you loaded up so you can reload when you know you have only one in the chamber and carry plenty of spare magazines and ammo to refill them. If it starts jamming, make sure you've sanded the barrel and bolt down enough and remove the jam door for easier access. Recon by the way will fit nicely in the backpack, and with a 5 round magazine of dart taggers with the air restrictors removed should prove quite an accurate/efficient weapon for giving you enough time to run, or in a group provide some decent cover/support fire.
Firefly has decent range, 8 ammo/dart holders, compact enough to fit in a large backpack but that's probably pushing it.
Dart Tag Hyperfire is even more compact, has 10 rounds I believe, a little uncomfortable to prime in my opinion, decent range, but I have heard the darts fall out of the barrel more easily, maybe a barrel modification could fix this issue, and also no dart holders, but you can constantly check your barrel.
The maverick is your most compact with decent rate of fire, and perhaps for reloading faster, either mod it to pull out more, or have a removable chamber and get a second one. The problem with this guy, is that in times of panic, one tends to forget how many darts they have and run out without knowing and it tends to misfire a lot, at least our group's selection of mavericks. Personally I would choose the hyperfire or recon over this one.
If you have one around, a Nitefinder may not be the best for Zombies as it is only a single shot, maybe a disk shot will have better performance due to its having 2 more dart holders, but they are nice and compact, accurate, decent range, and cheaper than the rest (nitefinder, not the disk shot). Just be sure you are fast enough to reload each shot.
I hope this selection and description helps!

Personally I like the Buzzbee Belt Blaster. HvZ is all about capacity, and you can't argue with 30 shots. Raiders and other clip fed guns are also good, but all of them have the potential to jam, so keep a side arm handy. Maverick or a tek 6 is good for that since they're simpler revolver designs.

Missions- LS+DTB integration with drum
Running- Recon with drum
With both- Maverick, cargo pocket full of socks, extra clips/darts
I could see a Berserker with the center modified to shoot darts like a BBBB being really effective as well. If you're asking about what you should use I'm going to make the assumption that you haven't played before. My best advice, without knowing what all you have in your collection or what you're comfortable with using, is that you're looking for blasters with high ammo capacity that fire very reliably. Long range doesn't matter as much as those other factors.

Yeah, whoops. Thanks for that. I forgot to mention that the singled part should only be used for taking pot shots at long distance targets during missions. You'd be mostly using the 20 barrel springer, with the advantage being that you can reload on the go without having to fumble with clips or belts in the case of the belt blaster.Don't single a Berserker for HvZ, you'll kill someone.

If this thread gets locked (like most "What gun is best" threads), feel free to PM me if you have other HvZ related questions. I graduated college last year, so I don't get to play much HvZ these days, but I'm still active with helping my friends run games, modding blasters for HvZ uses, and making NPC guest appearances.

But if you really need to go down guns blazing, you won't do better than a stock Longshot with a Raider drum. Don't single a Berserker for HvZ, you'll kill someone.
EDIT: Padding your plunger head or using an airgun will keep your squad quiet in night missions.

I would opt for a raider, but mine has terribad accuracy. (not to mention its quite cumbersome). My raider and recon sometimes jam, but mostly my raider after I put the mag in.
I would highly reccomend a maverick, especially for your backpack. I numbered my turret so I could keep track of my ammo levels. It also fits well in cargo pants!
That tiny pistol (The something fire) used in dart tag that can fit on a tactical rail, making a great back up. Theres on like it that comes with the tech target it think. (Minus the tactical rail).
If you have to use clips, the buy a the nerf bandolier kit. Almost as cheap as the flip clip thing, but with a strap. I made something similar however with an old duffel bag strap. Also, just keep in mind the recon stock can hold a clip.
A new nerf gun coming out (I saw it on sgnerf) in supposed to be semi- auto. Yum!
Just remember:
Pick your style of gun. We cant make you use a certain gun
Stay out of combat
Think about reloading times and accuracy
Hope this helps

The only problem with magazines I see is that they are hard to reload. Sure, you can switch clips, but once the clips are empty...
But if your just going to class, then a couple clips would be fine.

The problem with a hornet is it is a bit to big and for some reason doesn't get as good ranges

Keep in mind that RF20s may be disallowed in HvZ. They were at ours.

For the ultimate in nasty, probably an RF20 with a drop-clip mod. Broderick (or was it Nisaburo?) had one that was just nasty at last Effeminate (Seattle, WA war). He carried two 20-shot clips which gave him 60 shots at full-auto, and his RF20 was modded to hit over 50'.
Keep in mind that RF20s may be disallowed in HvZ. They were at ours.
Yeah, but rapid fire 20's are heavier than hell and are fragile. I had one for 5 minutes stock and the check valve in the pump blew.
I would highly recommend a Recon as your primary. It's modular design allows you to sneak it into places, and it can take a raider drum. Don't use an actual raider though, it's ranges are too low (lower than the recon's) for any outdoor engagement and it's a bit hard to control at times (especially if you're left handed, like me). It's only real use is for indoor CQB, which in that case it can tear shit up.
For your sidearm, use a maverick. My maverick has saved me countless times. 'Nuff said.

For the record, I'd take a stock raider over a modded longshot any day in this situation. They just don't shoot fast enough, and the best you can do to get it faster is a shotgun handle. I think the idea behind the longshot with drum suggestion is to have range and add rate of fire, but since rof is so much more vital, it's better to start with rof and add range.

Assuming someone doesn't have two drums for the Raider (or doesn't have a Raider in the first place), what are other suggestions?

My standard loadout was my modded longshot with an extra clip with modded streamlines (I filled in the hole in the tip, greatly improved accuracy) and a side arm, usually a maverick with the AR's removed, firing screamer darts.
For missions I crammed on as much as I could carry. My idea of reloading on the fly was to switch weapons, so it wasn't uncommon to see me with 5+ guns on me, plus marshmellows and extra clips. Needless to say, I didn't move fast, but zilled zombies by the hundreds.
Since this was before raider, I saw a lot of Rf20s, tech tommy 20's and Magstrikes. High ROF is key in large zombie invasions, as well as good running shoes. You will do plenty of running.
Don't worry so much about what other people will allow. Throw your own wars and kick your friends' asses until they all want one.

1: Avoid being a target. Like I already said, downplaying the fact that you're a human means less attention from zombies. The less often you have to fire on zombies, the more ammo you have.
2: Work with a team. Lone humans make easy targets for zombies, as there's usually a 50% chance of getting a meal. Simply being with one other armed human lowers the chances of being tagged by a single zombie to somewhere around 10%; one of you will most likely make the shot, if not both of you. Beyond that, zombies are less likely to attack larger groups of humans. Having more people with you also means being able to watch various directions. Its best if you do some preparation with your group, learn to watch every angle, train to keep full 360 degree cover.
3: Save your ammo. Usually its best not to engage zombies until <20 ft. Modding a gun can help, but in my experience, added range is less important than an increased projectile speed, because darts are easy to dodge. Try to take shots only when you know you'll hit your target. Sometimes suppressing fire is useful, but if you know the only option is to stun a zombie (if they're blocking the doors to your dorm, for example), get in close enough that you can make the shot. The advantage should be obvious: the less you shoot, the more ammo you have at your disposal. I got careless once because I had a Raider drum in my Recon, and I started lobbing shots at some zombies, and it almost got me zombified. (Rule 2 saved me).
Those will get you through the day, but really the only way to survive missions where there will be a large concentration of zombies is to work with a team, keep a tight formation, and watch every angle. Having a clear chain of command is also a good idea, the last thing you want is to start arguing about which way to go when you have a horde on your back.
As for carrying multiple weapons per Demon's suggestion, I have to respectfully disagree. I carry only one primary weapon (I switch between Recon and Longshot) and a sidearm, usually a Maverick. I haven't used the Maverick against zombies yet, but I've seen a lot of humans save their asses with one when their primary weapon ran out or jammed, so I let them teach me that lesson instead of learning it myself.

Also, remember: they now have a nerf shield, use the 28 days later riot shield technique if they get too close on a mission! And Id have to agree with a raider, I've survived for quite a long time using one, even with reload issues.
One last tidbit: hide if you have the option, much safer that way!

If melee is allowed, consider adding a bayonet to your gun. Not having to holster the gun and draw your blade can be a life saver, but that goes for any nerf game that allows for melee.
