..."Not another nerf nade..."

Having read all nine pages of discussion about nerf nades, mines, tripwires etc on NHQ, I came up with my own idea. It is to be a UGL launched grenade, that can be filled with anything - foam, BBs, even paint.

Original topic if you're interested. I suggest you read it; it provides a lot of background information about the development behind it and problems it's overcome etc.

My original idea was for a cork based design (see topic for details), however with Davisev5225's help, we've developed it into much more...

What I propose to do. Note that I'll remove the little lip inside the capsule. The catch is pretty self explanitary - credit goes to a nerfing friend when he was looking at the bolt sled for the Recon. I haven't drawn in the rest of the chamber since thats piss easy compared to the catch and hasnt got anything to do with the mechanism.
Posted Image

I'll add a rim to the detonator so that when it impacts, it pushes the catch inwards (from holes in the capsule).
Posted Image

This forces the baseplate backwards with lots of force. It will stop at the end when the catches engage two more holes at the bottom. Note that the spring also pushes the detonator forwards again.
Posted Image

My main aims for this are as follows:
  • To make a successful, working Nerf Nade.
  • Made cheaply out of readily available materials - so they can be mass produced by anyone
  • Once the grenade is finished, I intend to make an underslung/underbarrel grenade launcher, either out of the LS front gun, or from scratch.

Please discuss - comments, questions, suggestions all welcome.

Looks pretty good and it looks like it would work pretty well. I have a question though, would you have to make a certain side hit whatever you're throwing it at?

It is designed so that it will be fired from a grenade launcher, not thrown. It could work thrown, but it wouldn't work as well.

The front will be weighted - weights can be added inside the hollow detonator, 'inside' the spring'. This means that when it's fired, it will always fly headfirst, allowing the warhead to always strike walls, floors or people. The warhead is a foam ball that will be cut in half and 'hollowed out' to fit over the end, preventing and/or minimising injury - it's a Nerf grenade after all, and Nerf toys are safe foam toys. The other advantage of foam balls is that they can be 'colour coded' - either they're already different colours, or can be painted or drawn on to indicate the type of grenade - Orange for foam, Yellow for paint etc...

Steps to make nerf grenade launcher

1.Make a homemade barrel for your titan.

2.Place grenade in titan.

3.Pump up titan.

4.Have fun.

Ryan- Could you weigh the balls for extra oomph? Maybe cut one ball open (like a slit) and spread it so you could get some weights in there?

Good idea, I could use a titan as an RPG style weapon - but how about a UGL - I was thinking of converting a Front Gun, that way you're armed with darts and nades on the same weapon.

Anyways, an update.
I went back to the shop today and bought some more stuff - mainly for the catch and chamber. I've also worked out that the total ammo capacity will be around 45 millilitres, give or take a bit, depending on where the catch finally ends up and the spine and deflector taking up space.

As for parts, well, as I said, Ive got all the parts I need for now - pretty much the only thing I'm missing is the deflector, but this can be interchangable, depending on what kind of 'explosion' you want, and what kind of payload you have. In theory, now I just need to put it all together. I need to make the catch though, as believe it or not, its made of two different kinds of door catches.

I spent this whole of this afternoon cutting up bits of tube caps, and assembling the catch. I'll do a little more on it tomorrow, but I've found out that I'll be needing a weaker spring - using the recon spring gives it so much force that when it explodes it will probably actually kill someone, let alone shatter the metal catch. Looking for a spring 1 inch diameter, 4 inches long (10cm), or thereabouts. Any ideas where I can get some from?

Overall its coming along well, and looks promising. Providing I can get a weaker spring.

I have experimented with spring powered party poppers.

I am from the UK too (hence the name NerfUK). I found the ones in my writeup in Makro. If you view my thread some of my replies state when and how much they cost.

They look really good
What are the exact sizes of the spring? As I said, I'm looking for 1" diameter with 4" length. Even if they're only a similar size they'll probably do. Also, how strong are the springs? I'm looking for something with moderate strength, but not as much as the Recon main spring.

I am not sure of the exact measurements of these springs. They are slightly longer than a maverick spring and about the same width though. Also, they are much stronger than a recon spring.

Maybe JSB could find out measurements for you?

...I intended for it to be self-evident. Almost all of my pictures are taken on a crafts board with one inch grid lines...

Shit, sorry. I just glanced at the picture and rushed to post. My apologies. Original post edited.

From JSB's picture, it looks like the right size, however the recon spring is already too strong. I'll see if I can find anywhere that sells actual springs on their own or in packs.

I don't see any point in modifying a front gun to do it. You can integrate a Titan just as well, and use that.

Look at the various Maverick Titans.

I think your best bet in a launched grenade is gonna be something very light. PVC's not gonna cut it.

Try building a home made ball valve gun to launch the 'nades. Also great job on the prototype!

Yes, a Titan would launch it further, and so could be used as an RPG if made and used in a war, but the LSFG is just a UGL - it doesn't have to have massive ranges. Like I said before, a UGL allows you to use both darts and nades, and can attatch on the front of a recon or a longshot, or, as a standalone weapon - I intend to make a fold out stock for it.
As for weight, it's going to be hard to get it much lighter - you try making a working grenade out of foam! :P Also, I may simple spring launch the grenade rather than by pneumatic means.

Thanks, and how do you suggest I make a valve gun? I toyed with the idea of making a homemade launcher, then decided it would probably be easier to just completely rebuild the insides of a Front Gun.

The problem with using the LSFG as your UGL is that it is so weak. Stock, it launches darts roughly 15 feet, and even with mods doesn't get much better. That is light foam darts we're talking about. If you try to fire your "Nerf Nade" out of a LSFG, you're going to get it to fly a few feet at best, if it even launches at all. Basically, you'd be dropping the 'nade down at your feet, so that you would be caught in the "blast". I think we can all agree that's only good for a suicide run, and a laugh.

So I think, if you are intent on going with a UGL, you're better off looking into a Titan or a homemade as suggested above.

I will be completely gutting the LSFG and replacing all the pars - I intend for it to be spring powered, not air powered (ie a plunger). I will definitely consider making a launcher out of a titan at some point though. Whether it be in an RPG form, another UGL form, who knows.

The only way you can use a spring powered launcher is with a quarter inch barrel or if you use a SNAP or a Big SNAP. To shorten the length you could use multiple plunger assemblies. You could also use a SNAP design without the plunger head to just push your grenade.

Easy: first size of PVC that loosely fits the nade will serve as the shell. Put a cap on the back, secure the spring to it, and have a plexi plate on the other side. Make a catch in front of where the nade will be when set. Hook this to some trigger.

Stick the whole thing below your LS.

The end of the grenade will actually poke out of the end. I need some 40mm pvc for the grenade to fit - if you have a look at the design, the protruding ring near the front of the grenade will be as far as the grenade goes in. I will then have a design similar to the one you've suggested from what I can make out of your description; think of it like a normal plunger method of firing, except there will be no bolt - the plunger simply pushes the grenade out at high speed and acceleration. The plunger head among others will have holes in to minimise air resistance when firing. This is the basic principle - there's obviously slightly more to it. I'll do some proper designs when I get an LSFG.

My LSFG arrived today, so hopefully I'll be able to start on the launcher. I still havent overcome the problem of getting a different spring for nade. Once I have that, i'll hopefully be able to piece it together. Thanks for the support anyways :)

And noobie, if you'd read the topic you'd realise Im using an LSFG, not a homemade, and i want a trigger mechanism, so it can be loaded and then fired just like a normal nade launcher. And also as I've mentioned before, the end of the grenade will stick out of the launcher - it will not fit down a tube.

Also, you won't be able to make a spring-based air launch. Hell, you'll be hard-pressed to make a pump-based air launch. Your best bet is to have it fit down the barrel of a launcher and use a spring plunger to physically contact and launch the grenade.
