Seriously fuck alternative, and the only metal I've ever liked is naked city, and ambient black metal (Jesu, Burzum, etc.). A lot of mainstream metal is some of the most horribly boring stuff. ever. Don't get me started on Guitar world heads.
But good rock songs?
I'm really into Jay Reatard at the moment. He's a machine when it comes to creating new material, really good garage punk with solid pop influences. I'm also really digging Deerhunter's weird era cont (an album, I know it said song). If I had to pick a song probably Jay Reatard's Nightmares at the moment.

Holy shit... Burzum.... They are one of the most hardcore bands I have EVER lent an ear to. Didn't one of their members blow his head off with a shotgun, and the other members use fragments of his skull to make necklaces that they wore on stage?
Anyway, I have another addition:
This is the song FA_24 used in his longshot vid: Black Hearts Now Reign
Quite a good song.
EDIT: Another amazing song: Zombie Autopilot

Remind me never to look at another music topic on here ever again.
Except for a select few, all of your music sucks.
I am going to +1 that. I keep looking at this topic, even though I know people are going to post stupid, non-guitar driven songs. I don't particularly like a lot of new metal bands, but they at least know how to play guitar (most of the time), but seriously...papa roach? Sum 41? Give me a break.

Dimmu Borgir
Horrorpops
Demented are Go
Cradle of Filth
Misfits
Spooky is good too.

Metallica: Kill 'Em All. Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All, Death Magnetic. I personally think that after ...And justice for All their music quality dropped pretty hard, but Death Magnetic is better than their stuff from the 90's and almost as good as their stuff from the 80's.
Rush: Everything Except Fly by Night. Thats over 27 CD's worth of music. Its prog-rock but its still guitar driven until their stuff from the 80's when it was mostly synthesizers.
Rammstein: German industrial metal. Its weird stuff and not every one would like it, but they still sound good, and maintain their sound live.
Five Finger Death Punch: They only have one CD and its awesome. Zoltan Bathory is one of the best metal guitarist out there. He played bass for UPO.
System of a Down: Good music all around. Good guitar riffs.
Cradle of Filth: Their early works (90's) and God Speed on the Devil's Thunder are good.
Dimmu Borgir: All of their music is good. A lot like Cradle of Filth if you don't listen to black metal and can hear the difference.
I'm sure I could think of more, but I don't feel like it.

Death Magnetic is OK, it has it's moments, but James just sounds old and worn out on the album. It might just be the God-awful mixes, but it's not as good as their '80s stuff or The Black Album. A hell of a lot better than Load and Re-Load though.
Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeppelin
ANY Mastodon, Metallica, Dragonforce, Slipknot songs.
Stairway = Good
Metallica = Good
Slipknot = Awesome
Dragonforce = Effeminate Phial
Just kidding, I really don't like Dragonforce, but hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Check this out though, it's pretty funny.

Yeah, "Tell all your friends Herman Li is cool or i'll s*** on your head." Then the pic, LOL. Quoting the movie there. Kalex, I prefer "Operation Ground and Pound" or "Heroes of our Time" though. Sorry.
And i'm noticing that almost everyone put Mettalica down on their list. Does nerfing cause us to like Metallica, or is that a very odd coincidence? And I forgot:
System of a Down
Lamb of God
Avenged Sevenfold
Disturbed
And to quote that damned grey rabbit, "That's all, folks!"
Why did I do that?.... Don't answer that.
And if all he eats is carrots, how come that rabbit doesn't look like a traffic cone? HOW!?!?!?!?!?! I can't figure that out!
Why am I typing this? Oops, typing my thoughts.

Nerfing doesn't cause you to like Metallica. It's the fact that almost everybody DOES like Metallica. Seriously, I have found very few people who don't like them. Yes, I've talked to people who think they're overated, but they aren't like "ZOMG I H8 METALLICA".

Not to be the black sheep, but I find Metallica infinitely boring. I have lots of love and respect for the guys in the band and what they've done for the genre, but I can't bring myself to listen to them. Maybe they're not heavy enough, maybe their sound just doesn't do it for me, but something just doesn't click when I listen to them.

Nah, just kidding. Anyway, the point I was trying to make is very few people hate Metallica the way people hate some other bands, Slipknot or Draonforce for example. I personally am a big fan of Slipknot, but many, many people absolutely despise them. I haven't ever met anybody who hates Metallica to that level though.

That's cos Metallica doesn't give metal a bad name... I only hate Slipknot because whenever I ask someone if they like metal the conversation goes like this:
They: "What, like Slipknot? I don't like stuff like that." This can be a different mallcore band... but since we're talking about Slipknot I'll use them as an example.
Me: "No, Slipknot is not metal."
They: "Well, I guess I don't know what metal is, then."
It's just aggravating to see people have such a misconception of a whole genre because of a particularly popular band. If you want to listen to Slipknot, fine, just don't introduce them as metal... I don't really want to argue this point, so if you feel differently, tough, don't get take it to the point of a flame in the thread.
