How large are the gears then? I have yet to see any internals on this beast so I don't know how large anything is. If they break then you can probably make replacements from metal, increasing the ability to handle stress. I would also reinforce areas where they take the most wear.

FA_24: For the most part this isn't a concept thread. Its a legitimate idea that (I assume) the kid is going to do. It just sounds like the Airsoft batteries are the concept.

I was thinking that you could set up some type of pill box or bunker with a lookout to call the shots like a loser team and they could cover you while you reload. The whole premise of the plug and shoot was if you were in an indoor war you could use the extension cord if the batteries went dead as a failsafe.

When I recieve my Vulcan I will by a 9v. transformer and e-tape the wires to the battery terminals just to see if it will work before I destroy the internal wireing by trying to parralel wire it.

I can't wait till I can get it in a couple months. I have like 4 or 5 4000 LiPo RC Battery Packs that I don't use anymore, so those will be great for the Vulcan. I used them for a 15t Motor on an RC car before they did'nt hold enough charge anymore for what I wanted, but they will hold plenty for this thing.

Or maybe I don't feel the need to use foolish words in order to express myself. I heard once that profanity is the feeble effort of a weak mind trying to express itself forcefully, and I couldn't have put it better myself.

While I agree with you in principal - is there really much difference, given your rational for not swearing, between saying/typing heck or frick, and saying/typing the words you are using them to replace? You could just as easily say:

That way, there are no "foolish words" at all, and your "weak mind" would not in any way be making a "feeble effort" to "express itself forcefully."

My dad is an electritian and he says if you get a 9v. transformer you can wire up the Vulcan so all you have to do is plug it in and shoot. I am also thinking of the possibility of having this be removable so you can take the transformer out and convert it back to battery power.

So, some nomenclature:

What you're talking about is not a transformer, but a power supply, and then you are correct.

The trouble with using a transformer (which is just a matched pair of coils) is that there is no rectification of AC to DC. the Vulcan runs on DC - running it on AC has the potential to seriously damage it.

So something that you could in fact do is use a 120VAC-9VAC transformer, and a piece of electronics called a "bridge rectifier" which is in fact simply four diodes which chop the AC waveform into an all-positive set of humps, and a capacitor to smooth that waveform out to something closely approximating steady-state DC.

Yes, that's how a bridge rectifier works. The zigzag in the center of the diamond-shape is a resistor, and represents your load. in this case, it represents the Vulcan.

A PV of the size necessary to supply enough current would be... pretty large. And expensive. While it would be a good idea, because voltage output of a PV is directly proportional to light incident upon the surface, it's not going to be particularly constant - even if you want to lug around a solar panel large enough to feed your Vulcan.

Relay+Phototransistor=Vulcan that turns on when the lights do.

My coworker and I have started work on this, using an Arduino co run pan/tilt servomotors and trigger solenoid. More when it's integrated into the Vulcan itself, as right now it is nothing but code for a microcontroller.

Indeed, you don't need that, if all you want to do is turn on the firing mechanism when motion is detected.

The idea with using the microcontroller is to raise the Vulcan or traverse it from side to side in order to track a target, autonomously. Think "sentry gun" and you get the idea.

It's true that you can do this without a microcontroller, but that's a whole lot more analog design than I have the chops for.
