Just curious, since a quick search didn't turn up anything- has anyone else experienced nasty timing issues with Mavericks after a basic AR removal? My housemate and I both did preliminary AR removals and have both found that while the range is indeed improved on good shots, many shots jam or only go ~1m unless the trigger is pulled ever so slowly. I've played around with some trigger stops and using tape strips to thicken the trigger latch arm (across the pivot from the ring around the piston case) and/or the tab that engages the barrel-rotation mechanism, but I still have a solid 25% misfire rate.

On a tangent, if there's no quick (level 0 or 1 mod) fix for the apparent shoddyness of the Maverick timing, is there any other currently available small side-arm that could be packed in a suitcase alongside a box of DTBs and, with a little work, stand up to a pair of younger cousins with brand new DTBs? :)

Haha. Well my friend, the Maverick couldn't stand up to a DTB modded or not. It sounds like either you put your gun back together wrong, or you have a defective gun. however if it was working before and its not now, I'd try reversing the AR mod (if possible). If I were you, I'd get myself a couple modded Nightfinders. The ROF is weak, but they pack a punch indoors. The Magstrike has a great ROF and I've gotten ranges of 40+ feet level and 60+ feet angled with mine. However its considerably bigger than a Maverick. Perhaps maybe just get a new Maverick or a Recon. Hope that helps ya out. Have fun!

The Disk Shot Pistol is a great sidearm, and with a couple mods, it can get 50 feet.

True, but the only good thing in that set is the gun and you can't just buy the gun so you end up spending 15 bucks on a gun thats the exact same as a Nightfinder inside. OR... You can get a Nightfinder and spend 6 bucks. My nightfinder shoots 80 feet level and 113 feet angled. It's a beast and its a bitch to cock, but the ranges speak for themselves.

Yeah it's the only thing good in the pack, but it's the only thing in the pack, except for the disks which are fun to throw at people. And I got my gun for 10 dollars on clearance at Toys 'R' Us. Plus I like having the extra dart holders.

Ah, I was waiting for someone to bring this up. I've had similar problems, with Mavericks. They are a fussy gun, movement greatly affects the timing and range. I have tried to fix mavericks to make them more reliable and its rather difficult. I would just get more straight-forward, like a disk shot or a NF.

I had this same exact problem too. It only shoots if you pull the trigger very slowly.

I was going to post a topic on it, but then I chucked it out the window, and went cajoling with my Dual DTGs and Disk Shot.

Same problem, when I took out the AR's on my Maverick, the range decreased...it simply ceased to shoot (happened to 3/4 of mine) the last one i'm going to leave stock. This also happened to my firefly, which I singled, and is now REALLY good, and for another maverick, the turret broke (attempting to do the drop clip mod) and I singled that...at least it works, looks like a piece of crud pistol...oh well at least I saved a nerf gun...(get's like 20')

Thanks :)

My guess is what actually happens with the Mav is that, as with all guns, the ARs decrease the airflow rate, which gives you a longer window for the barrel to pass the piston and still fire. Pull the ARs and all the air comes in a quick burst, so the turret angle needs to be spot-on to work. Looks like the geometry of the ratcheted cylinder is perfect if the tab always touches the edge of a tooth, but if you pull too fast, I'm guessing the tab deflects the tooth away quickly, over-spinning the turret. I actually kept all the parts to completely reverse the mod, but since I don't immediately need to make it work, I may just toy with it some more.

My cousins are considerably younger than I am, so my goal is a gun that is somewhat weaker than a DTG, but not cripplingly so. And using the same ammo is a plus.

I'm a little wary of the NiteFinder- after growing up with the likes of the Ballzooka and Arrowstorm, anything that only packs a single shot per reload strikes me as a bit inefficient, mod or no. Still, a pair might be okay...
The MagStrike has me intrigued. Roughly where do the pneumatics run in one of those? Would it be conceivable to knock one down to DTG-size without breaking the mechanism?
I seriously considered the Recon when I first got my DTGs. Are any of the accessories actually useful, or is it mainly just a pistol with a clip that only takes streamlines? I also heard from another shopper that the recon spring is weak. Is this true? If so, would a Mav spring be better, or would I have to covertly pull the spring from my housemate's Firefly? :)

ed: Looking here, it seems like the Recon is a minor pain to mod nondestructively.
Also, how many pumps does a MagStrike take to fire decently? The magazine system won't do me much good against a turret if it takes longer to pump than a NF would take to reload...

Well, there is one way to shorten it up at least, but I don't think anyone has tried it yet. You would need to saw off the entire tank on the back and flip it 180* and glue it directly to the bottom of the pump. This would shorten up the gun by a good 6 inches. You might need to make the hoses longer to reach but it would make it so much easier to wield.

Stay away from the Recon. It's not worth the time and effort, honestly. You could saw down the Magstrike and put the tank on the bottom as Banshee suggested, although I'm not sure how well that would work, as I haven't gotten my hands on one yet. I'll assume you want a sidearm for your DTGs. I use my DTGs AS sidearms, actually, having them in holsters on both thighs. They've got the front handle sawed off, and I can cock them on my belt.

Now that I'm thinking about it, you could try and find a way to integrate the Nitefinder into the Photon Burst Power Blaster you'd have a nice 8 shot sidearm. I don't think anyone has ever done that. I would try it, but I messed up the PBPB Magazine really bad.

Actually, I can use my DTGs as sidearms just fine under normal circumstances. What I'm looking for is simply something modable and portable that is simply a little worse than a DTG. The whole single-shot pistol idea is growing on me right now, but out of good etiquette I'll probably spin another thread rather than have that discussion here.

Double-post-bad-juju, I know, but this is actually back on topic- I've found a level-0 fix to the timing issue, and I think, an explanation of why it's happening on some mods but not others. Details forthcoming in a full Mav4Noobs thread once I pull the pics off my camera (probably after I finish the mod on my TTG...), but long story short, place one lucky penny behind the stock spring. That simple.
