Yep, like the title implies, HvZ has never been in more of media spotlight. We had two reporters embedded here at Goucher last game in Fall 2007, and their respective article and photo slideshow with audio have been posted HERE.

Please note-
1) That watchman in the first slide is ME :D
2) In the ensuing slide, Matt Sabine and Max Temkin are mislabeled. They're the other way around regarding the pictures they correspond to.

Enjoy! Good nerfing to all and wish me luck...we just started up the spring game at 12 AM this morning and due to both the VTech anniversary and plot details, cannot use any weapons today except socks.

I never really understood the whole zombie v human thing... Like how you play and all. On a side note I love the white longshot with blood spatters.

Funny how stuff happens so close to me and I have no idea just what in the hell is going on. I'm at Hopkins, and nothing like this happens. Yet at UMaryland and Goucher, it's all over the place.

Anyways, I love the 8-bit tie, and the (I think I counted 2 or 3) pump-action kits from Slug.

This looks like so much fun. I will definitely be playing HvZ when I'm in college. I guess I'll have to wait...
On a side note, I saw someone with an arrowstorm.

Out of the 135 kits I've made and sound I'm pretty sure 8-10 of them ended up at Goucher college.

Temkin has no military training and no plans to join the military. But he and the others marching with him seemed hungry for at least part of the soldier's experience -- the friendships forged under fire, the intensity of life-or-death situations, the chance to be tested. As one militia member said: "You get to be Arnold Schwarzenegger. You get to go blazing into a pack of people and save the day."

It's exactly this viewpoint that disturbs Myers, the English professor who spoke out during the community conversation. "I don't have anything specifically against the game as a game," he said. "What sort of troubled me was seeing young men walking around campus in camouflage and doing a kind of walk I would characterize as a swagger or aggressive pose. It's clearly role-playing, but, as Shakespeare would say, 'All the world's a stage.' So the roles say a lot about who people are. The game perhaps gives some insight into why war is so attractive to young men."

Looks like someone had a very boring childhood.

The little critters of nature, they don't know that they're ugly. That's very funny, a fly marrying a bumble bee. I told you I'd shoot, but you didn't believe me. Why didn't you believe me?

That's because you're at Hopkins.

I hope that when I go to college they have this going.

Games like this are fun. My younger brothers had multiple games of "Assassins" at their high school last year and everyone had a blast. I want to try to organize something similar at U Park (PSU main campus) when I transfer up there come the fall semester. 43,000 people should make for a good time.

And why are so many people so quick to shoot down games like this? Lazer tag isn't too violent for 8 year olds, but when packing peanuts fly across grass fields and 19-20 year old people play, it is 1 step away from murder.

EDIT:

I did a quick search for HvZ in google and found a page with this:

Quote

I was personally affected from Virginia Tech when a friend of mine's cousin witnessed the aftermath of his next door neighbor, Ryan Clark's, brutal death.

link

Her friend's cousin's neighbor died. While it is tragic for the victim's family, but someone separated by 3 degrees? Come on. So because your neighbor's college roommate's ex-wife robbed a bank, the polce are looking at you as a possible accomplice. It's people like this that prevent us from having fun.

I must ask the topic creator this: were does your HVZ stand on modding? I've noticed that some guns in the link were painted and some had the CS pump action kits. I am thinking about hosting a war and would like to know what colleges do too.

Hahah, Myers teaches a pretty intense Shakespeare course...I'm in it. He's not a bad guy by any means, but he does use that quote every damn class period.

The moderators hold mandatory pregame meetings where rules are explained and guns are tested. No Stefans, obviously, but springs, integrations, AR removal etc. is totally fine so long as the darts don't hurt or leave a welt.

This game I'm packing the following:
-Longshot with the CS pump action mod, added NF spring, and ARs removed
-Recon with ARs removed
-Secret Shot 1
-A buttload of socks

Very interesting read. We do HvZ here at Ohio University too and the games are most definitely a blast. The turnout this year was huge and even though you do get some dicks (as always) almost everybody plays fair and just makes it the best week of the quarter.

Actually, I think I am going to do sort of a "war reporting" bit next fall during our next HvZ. Do daily reports of the number of zombies with pictures and the like. Look forward to it, I guess.

If stefans aren't allowed, what is the most common ammo type?
And also, do people typically pick up their ammo after they've stunned zombies, or do they waste no time and run?

If I were playing this, I would load up my FF and attach a strap, grab my recon for backup, and holster my disk shot pistol. I would say that would be the most effective combination in terms of what I have.

DTDs with the ends cut off a tad to fit in Mavs. Streamlines, either stock or taped wrapped around them towards the tip (I do the latter). That's it, usually.

Depends on the situation, really.

I don't know what an FF is, although I can usually decode the standard acronyms on here...but know that in our games automatic guns need to be "unlocked" via mission completion.

Oh, sorry. I typically don't abbreviate things unless I have previously mentioned the full name. FF is Firefly, the submachine gun looking thing with an 8 shot turret. It's not an automatic.

hasn't the Washington post talked about HvZ before?
I am the VP of umd's nerf apocalypse society(we do HvZ in the fall and regular nerf stuff the rest of the year) and I sort of remember them looking
for people to interview back in October but it seemed like they were trying to relate us to the whole VTech thing so
I did not reply back then.

Captain- I take back what I said earlier in the thread. A girl on my squad is in fact rocking a hot pink FF.

And some douchebag is using a plain ol' yellow one.

Wait, you have to unlock automatic weapons?! I never heard that rule before. Which guns are considered "automatics"?

Aside from the Rapid Fire 20 and the Tommy 20, not many come to mind. Although something may be possible with a good servo and a LS.

And since GW became president, 2 interesting things happened. 1, the assault weapon ban expired, meaning if the state doesn't outlaw the weapons, you can have them. 2, he gave retired police officers the ability to effectively obtain any weapon they want, regardless of state laws. Considering those facts, anything short of a simulated RPG should be allowed if you want real immersion.

Anything that does NOT need to be cocked to fire several shots in a row. RF 20, TommyMech 20, Magstrike, basically.

Hahaha, don't read into HvZ too much. The plot is often frivolous. Case in point- last night our makeshift recon team had to do a whole bunch of beacon drops. They succeeded but when the zombies chased them, they went against the mods and hid in the chapel, which is a safe zone they were told NOT to use on the mission...and as of midnight or so last night each of the five dudes is worth 4 kill points because Zombie Jesus cursed them.

So realism doesn't really factor in.

We have to unlock rapid-fire guns because simply put it makes the game harder. If darn near everyone took RF 20s everywhere, the game would last two days because no one would die.

i am going to have to disagree with you on that
first off most of your players probably wont own that gun
secondly eventually there will be enough zombies to take on the people who do have those guns and are able to use them effectively (even if a large number have "auto" guns)

Come on man, you were doing a good job. The use of capitalization and punctuation would be appreciated.

And keep in mind these people have been doing this for a while; they probably found out that autos were brutally effective, so much so that they should be "unlocked". This isn't a thread about theories, this is something that has already been in place, so it can be assumed things are done for a reason.
