#9630 Color Scheme.

Posted by Grinch on 13 September 2003 - 01:39 PM in Off Topic

Yeah, I guess the new IBF boards are a little nicer-my only complaint would be the relocation of the Mark Topics Read button. Now I have to scroll down to the bottom of the screen in order to do so.

Oh c'mon grinchy, cut the man some slack. It's only temporary. This isn't permanent, and Cx can't exactly snap his fingers and make it all better at once. Be patient.

Oh, I'm just kidding. I have to say, though, I kind of like the old version better. I think it had better smilies, for one, but also because some button were easier to get to.

By the way, did IBF always have the "flood control"? It's kind of annoying having to wait a minute before posting again.

#9654 Nh Moving, Temporarily Unavailable

Posted by Grinch on 14 September 2003 - 05:21 PM in Site Feedback

Yeah, jesus, cut us, or more accurately, kev some slack. He does all the coding himself and pretty much manages this site sans all but moral support. I mean, wife, kid, school, job, and life gives him precisely dick in the area of free time, all of which he pours into this site. It will be dark again, the content will go up, life will go on....just give the man some breathing room.

VACC

I know, I'll be patient. I know it's hard to run a website--I can't even imagine doing it while trying to support a family. I know this is a crazy guess, and is off-topic, but cxwq, is your wife a member of these boards? I have a guess as to who it is...

Yeah, that's what I figured, I was just thought it'd be rude to ask.

#9660 Nh Moving, Temporarily Unavailable

Posted by Grinch on 14 September 2003 - 08:52 PM in Site Feedback

You must be crazy, Janga. The NHQ forums are nice, and the light format is very welcoming. At NH, I like how it's so dark, as if to say, "If you're gonna mess around, get the f*ck out of here...". Just seems like a place with more serious discussion and people that passed English class.

Anyhow, cxwq, once you get NH "re-darkified", do think you could reposition the "Mark Topics Read" link to the same spot it used to be in? It's kind of dumb being at the bottom of the page, because the new topics are usually at the top anyway.

#9670 Rawray's X-bow Mod

I can't seem to find Rawray's brass X-bow mod anymore...was it lost in the server move?

EDIT: Actually, none of the mods are loading up with pictures.

I don't like it very much. It's not really black, kinda, er, grayish. And stuff is hard to read. Anyhow, the new black/blue skin will a replica of the old one, right? That's the one that I like best.

Yes, but if you did, I would have to shoot you. Notice, I said Mac OS X "for one"... There are obviously other things out there that aren't Windows. ;)

Ah, yes, I used to be a faithful MacManiac. Yes, me and my trusty Performa 450 equipped with Mac OS 6 accomplished many tasks together. But, like some true-blue MacManiacs say, I've crossed over to the dark side.

Ewwwww...Macintosh apples are meant to be eaten, please dont play with your food...

Actually, Mac's have always been more advanced. Back in the day, when PC users were still typing in DOS code, Apple came up with Icons to make computers friendlier. Even today, the fastest current desktop computer in the world is made by Apple. The only reason I use a PC is because of the wide availability for software that you just can't get on Mac's.

*Ahem* My computor is the fastest destop computor in the world son. It has a 2.4 hyper threaded ghz processor, which is equal to a 3 point fuckin 8.

*Bows*

Actually, Apple makes a computer with DUAL 2.5 GHZ processor. Do the math, and that's 5.0 GHZ.

#9861 Name Meaning

Posted by Grinch on 17 September 2003 - 08:33 PM in Off Topic

Mine, mrgrinch_nm, roots back to my Yahoo! email. You can't have spaces so I can't write Mr. Grinch, so, I simply shortened it to mrgrinch. However, that address wasn't available, so I added _nm, which are my initials.

The reason I chose Grinch? 'Cause I always loved Dr. Seuss, and the Grinch r0x0rz.

#9863 Homestar Runner

Posted by Grinch on 17 September 2003 - 08:45 PM in Off Topic

Gosh dude........what's your problem! -_-

I think he's just saying that it's not really interesting to read 20 pages of Homestar Runner quotes. Fun to watch, not fun to read.

Hey hey hey...We were ALL nOObs at one point or another. Did anyone threaten you with petrolium jelly? If so, who did? I'd like to compliment them on their comeback skillz.

But not here at NerfHaven. This place isn't where a n00b belongs-we're here for serious, mature, and meaningful discussion. Some of the posters on NHQ don't type with proper grammar skills. There, we warn them. They don't change. Here, we flame them, until either they're forced to change, or they just leave--if their account hasn't already been deleted by then.

Furthermore, as I once posted on NHQ, there is a difference between n00b and newb. A n00b is a member of the forums that insults others, constantly gets himself into flames, and usually doesn't type with proper grammar. Oh, and don't forget the serious over-use of smilies. A newb, on the other hand, is one that comes to the forums to learn from others, to treat others with respect, and slowly make their way up the chain till they are respected.

Why are you getting flamed? Because (although I am only 13) there are twenty year-olds here that don't come to talk about Homestar Runner. That's usually an interest of younger people-which may be the reason your topic on HR was so popular at NerfHQ.

#9867 Attention N00bs...

Posted by Grinch on 17 September 2003 - 08:54 PM in Site Feedback

Oh really.......how so?

Oh, nothing important, maybe just because you have an average of 11.4 posts a day. -_-

I, personally, don't think post count should matter. If you're posting things that are worth reading, don't sweat it. Just because NerfHQ is down, it doesn't mean you guys can just come over here and start posting like maniacs.

NerfHQ does play an important role...it really is a place for the n00bs can learn and occupy themselves until they're ready to move on to the Haven.

#9870 Attention N00bs...

Posted by Grinch on 17 September 2003 - 09:23 PM in Site Feedback

Heck, when I joined this site, I got flamed for having 2.5 posts a day. It's the way of the Haven-it doesn't matter what people say, but new members simply get flamed if they have a high post count on their first couple of days. I've been here sinch March and I only have around 100 posts, you've been here two days, and you already have 1/4 of that. See why people are flaming you? Chill out for a little while.

That's just the way it works around here. -_-

#9893 Officials Of The Nerf Community

Yeah, it's impossible just to make a list of contributors. Every time somebody presents a new idea, a theory, a mod, a review, anything, they're contributing. It's not like back at NO when cxwq, VACC, Spoon, Box, and Goo were the only contributors.

Hmmm, I've always wondered something, but I was afraid it was too n00bish to ask...why does it always say "Bald-Rocket Production"? Does that mean Hal didn't actually make the site and hired somebody else to do it?

EDIT: Oh, wait, it's just his hosting provider.

#10018 Color Scheme.

Posted by Grinch on 19 September 2003 - 05:46 PM in Off Topic

I grew up on Mac's. In 3rd grade, my school was still using DOS. Why? I don't know, and I'm not 20 years old either. This was only a few years ago. Anyway, when I finally got my Dell Pentium III, I realized how much more control you have on a PC, and how much easier it was to find programs for it. Sometimes on the Mac, they try to make it so user friendly that it's too much. Maybe I LIKE deleting the cache manually. Maybe I LIKE to defrag my hardrive manually. Maybe I like...maybe I should stop now.

On a lighter note, (not to brag), but I just bought a new Dell, because I swear by them. P4, 17" flat panel, 2.6mhz, it's gonna be sweet. Basically, different people like different things. If you're gonna game, surf the net, and are good with computers...get a PC. If you've never touched a keyboard before, you better go with a Mac.

Pull out the barrel and replace it with 4inches of brass, it get really good range.

I just got a TTS at Wal-Mart. Is 4" a good length, or would something longer or shorter be more appropriate?

#10111 Nerf Online Returns

Posted by Grinch on 21 September 2003 - 11:34 AM in General Nerf

The new archived NO is stupid, yet somewhat useful for n00bs. The forums ARE NEVER coming back, though. ;)

You got that right. Looking at the new NO, it somewhat saddens me, because in reality, it's really a completely different site, with a classic name. The whole Times New Roman theme is gone, and the NO-ish pictures are gone, the site is kaput. It seems now that the site is just there, but back then, it was always improving, getting better--there was even a time that Hal tried to host is on his middle school's server.

I talked to Hal yesterday on AIM.

Nedsmaster: So, whose this Larry Chen guy?
halbergman: Oh, Larry, he's my business partner.
Nedsmaster: Are the forums gonna come back?
halbergman: Nope.

So there you have it. It's just gone, and nothing can re-create it.

#10203 What Do You Think About It:

Posted by Grinch on 22 September 2003 - 05:58 PM in Off Topic

I would consider pop bands/singers as people that have very good looks, and usually don't play an instrument. I would consider Britney Spears, Christina Aguilerea, Backstreet Boys, n*sync, etc., as pop.

I don't feel like they have much talent. They have auditions that they judge almost 90% on looks, and then they make the singing part using studio magic.

I think bands like Blink 182 and Sum 41 shouldn't be considered "pop". Blink started as a garage band in San Diego, and the same goes for Sum 41, 'cept in Canada. Same with Green Day. You can't fake knowing how to play a guitar, man. That does take practice and skills. These guys worked their way to the top, unlike these new boy-bands that have an instant hit.

Tech Target Set: Constricted Brass Barrel

#10280 What Do You Think About It:

Posted by Grinch on 23 September 2003 - 06:38 PM in Off Topic

Any band that started as a garage band is not pop, by all means. I would bet that none of the Backstreet Boys knew eachother 'till the studios hired them. Avril Lavigne is most definitely pop. Sure, there are some catchy songs, but one week, you've never heard of 'em, and the next, they're the most popular thing in the world.

Oh, and, any music video that is shown on Nickelodeon or Disney Channel (Avril, New Found Glory, etc.) is pop. The Baha Men are pop. All these new bands with their million dollar studios really piss me off. Anybody here like the Beatles? I love 'em. They are by far the best harmonists in Rock 'n' Roll history. They wrote their own songs, practiced on their own time, and, as a beginning band in Liverpool, had to practice hundreds of times, 'cause they had a limited amount of studio recording time. It took them 31 tries to get "Love Me Do" right, and it's a shame that this new artists suck the first time but have it made thanks to our friend, studio magic...nowadays these bands get everything done for them, with the exception of singing the song.

#10354 What Do You Think About It:

Posted by Grinch on 24 September 2003 - 05:44 PM in Off Topic

I think the difference between a band being "pop" or "popular" needs to be distinguished.

Pop:
A band or singer that was hired by a record label with the intentions in mind of making them a star.

Popular:
A band or singer that practiced as teenagers or got together as a band before they got famous, and didn't get picked up by a record label until after they've recorded their first record single.

That's the difference. Being in the "pop" genre is more like an occupation. You interview, and they call you back the next day. Being a popular band means that you've already formed as a singer or band, and the record labels accept you not for your looks, but for your music. Which brings me to my next point--the Beatles were not pop. They were popular, 'cause they started as nobodies just wanting to make music and have fun.

#10355 Forum Contest!

Posted by Grinch on 24 September 2003 - 05:48 PM in Modifications

Well, its good, but not good enough for the contest. I have something else in mind, but it involves a gun that's yet to arrive...my Crossbow. That will blow my last little thing out of the water. Really, all that is is a peice of information for the NIC. I just have to check my PMs at NHQ to see if there's a problem with sending that gun.

That's true, but I believe Cadmond said that we could submit the mod as long as it was different from a previous one. You couldn't submit a brass LnL mod, but you could submit a PTEG mod.

I have no idea what lefnut's is because he didn't do much of a writeup. I know mine is different than yours, however, because I used a 17/32 constricted barrel whereas you just used a normal 9/16 one. It's not much, but it is different.

#10441 California Debate

Posted by Grinch on 25 September 2003 - 11:14 PM in Off Topic

You know... I hope Arnold wins because by the looks of it, the candidates are more theatrical than Schwarzenegger is. Also, the last thing California needs is a politician by the looks of things.

Exactly. We've gone from a 30 billion dollar surplus to a 30 billion dollar deficit. Gray Davis screwed us over, and we need somebody in the office that isn't a politician. That, if anything, is helping Arnold's campaign more than anything else.

I can't believe that Huffington was so ferocious. Her arguments seemed rather pointless, and, after realizing that she couldn't win a debate with Arnold, she came up with off-topic remarks to hit him below the belt, such as accusing him as being a sexist and criticizing him for making violent movies.

I heard a porn star was running for California governor, er, governess. I think having a porn star in the politics would be so fucking awesome.

Yeah, some of the candidates are simply ridiculous. The porn star's campaign included putting a picture of a naked women on every page of school textbooks in order to "increase the attentiveness during class". Hehe, yeah right. Besides, what if you're not a guy?

Exactly, Groove. Why would any of us really care about you getting a Secret Shot? It has no relationship to us, and there is nothing for us to say in replies. Try to make your topics more interesting! You could have said, "I'm Getting a SS1, Is it a good gun?". It would still be less than desirable, but at least it would have some basis of discussion.

Oh, and Groove, lay off the "That's just fucking great" pic for a while... ;)

2)How easy does it have to be, have you ever made or designed a homemade before...
3)what kind of valve
4)whats your price range
5)homemades arent very practicle(except boltsniper's)

1) He obviously doesn't know how to, that's why he asked us.
2) Isn't it obvious that he hasn't made one before?
3) If he truly has never made a homemade before, he won't know much on the topic of homemade valves.
4) Probably something cheap and affordable, for starters.
5) That's for you to judge, and you have no idea what he's making it for. Maybe he just wants to learn.

#10584 What Do You Think About It:

Posted by Grinch on 28 September 2003 - 01:43 PM in Off Topic

Meh...

And to Mr. Grinch, bands that started out as garage bands can be pop. Blink*182 has turned pop. They didn't start out being pop, but they "evolved" to pop-ness.

Agreed. Blink 182 wasn't pop, up until the release of "All the Small Things". Then there was that huge Blink 182 fad, and they even had to change the name of the band from "Blink" to "Blink 182".
