Topics I've Started

The Verge Of Synthetic Life

24 April 2008 - 07:59 PM

http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/227

This guy remaps the genome of a bacteria to reprogram it for whatever means science may have for it.

Synthetic designer life poses new questions in ethics, science, and biology.

Ethical implications aside, what are some of your impressions of the talk? For yourself? The Future?

Personally, I see a vehicle that can recycle it's own emissions in the distant future.

For some of you this will be over your head, for others, it will be an intriguing insight into the future of biology and 'designer' bacteria.

My 2nd Attempt At Concert Photography

07 November 2007 - 08:47 PM

A friend of mine is the drummer from a well known (and quickly gaining fame) hardcore band called "The Devil Wears Prada"
www.myspace.com/tdwp

They were #6 on the Billboard indie charts for record sales, and are doing very well with themselves (100k a month split between 6 guys + 3k of merchandise a show)

Right now they're doing a supporting tour with Underminded, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Emery, and Chiodos.

Anyways,

Met up with Daniel @ The Avalon in Hollywood.

Traffic was so bad I missed the first 3 sets ;)

Daniel is really nice. He hooked me up in Los Angeles with me + 1.

Socal Wildfire Help

23 October 2007 - 04:05 PM

Southern California is being hit by 12 wildfires forcing evacuation and terrible air quality especially in San Diego.
Only 2 fires of 14 have been contained, the rest are between 0-10 percent contained, and one fire 27% contained.
I am here, offering assistance to anyone from Nerfhaven or friends / family members who are affected by nature's wrath.
Many friends of mine have been forced to evac from topanga canyon area and some areas near santa clarita and especially san diego, which has been hit hardest.

GOOGLE MAP OF WILDFIRES

I can smell the malibu fires and see the smoke drift across the coast when I wake up in the morning, and I know how tiring and stressful this can be, and I would be especially scared if my house were in danger.

That's smoke from the malibu fires seen at sunset from the bluffs near my house

If I am able to assist anyone being affected by these fires, please let me know.

Also, if anyone else in the SoCal region is willing to help out if anybody needs anything, from a place to crash for a night to a place to have lunch, a ride, or anything else anyone can think of please post in this thread as well.

Feel free to email / aim / msn me

Oh donating blood is always a big help. I know california's blood supply is at a critical level, especially since the red cross had to cancel like 20 blood drives in san diego due to fires.

Camping Up In Yosemite (beware 56k)

16 October 2007 - 07:07 PM

Each year the SMC photo department goes on a camping trip. It's a good time to get drunk, take pictures, cook, camp, and be raucous. Most of the people who go on the trip are extremely good photographers, and I learned a lot simply by asking questions.

I'm just a lowly photo 1 student, on my first trip with the group. About 30-40 students out of the entire program go up each year. I've got about 7 years of photo experience, but only 2 of which are formal photography classes.

Here's the best of my images of the trip.

let me know what you think.

This is the road off off highway 395. We had to drive about 2 miles into the forest, which was a naturally occuring wall of trees. There was virtually no transition between the high plain-ish area and the forest.

Posted Image
This is Silver Lake. It’s located around the June Lake Loop off of HWY395. There’s not much going on in this town. Everyone was fishing or sitting on their porch chainsmoking.

Posted Image
stopped while driving along the freeway. There’s tons of turn offs along the freeway for tourists to take pictures. I am one of said tourists.

Posted Image
haha guns. I missed a turn and went to make a uturn in this driveway. I noticed the sign and empty parking lot with the hectic clouds in the background. This image looks a lot better blown up.

my favorite shot of the whole trip.

road to south tufa / mono lake

Posted Image
mono lake. These weird sculptures sticking up are called tufa, and are formed when the salt of the lake (it’s 2.5x saltier than the sea, and 100x more alkaline) reacts with the alkaline content. They form under the water, and after millions of years get really big. The water level has dropped and exposed the sculptures that were once hidden underneath. Very surreal.

I personally like baby carrots, but regular carrots are just as good, and bigger.
