On the topic of unique ammunition, would a homemade ball gun be practical for this competition, or should i set me sights elsewhere? Thanks for the clarification.

Nerds never overlook a dirty joke. Never!I know. I was gonna say no dirty jokes, but I thought people would just overlook itThere's a dirty joke in here somewhere, I know it.
Yeah, we really don't overlook dirty jokes. We can also find the humor in little things. If he can insert the rod, he probably doesn't need to size down. Only go smaller if you have to force it into the tube, with like.... force.
Back on topic, silicon lubricant or Jig-A-Loo should work,
Jig-A-Loo is an invisible, water resistant lube used in speedcubes in the Rubik's Cubing world as it does no melt the plastic inside the cube, so it should work for what you are doing, and it does not goop up.

Thank you so much. The length is 1 1/2 inches and the diameter is 1 1/4 inches without all of the attached auto rotation junk on it.
It also has a small flat side to it that is 3/4 inches.
If yoou plan on intergrating make sure you have some method of cutting off all the Auto rotate junk.
Also, is there any writeup for that?

Yeah it could work, but don't expect godly ranges out of it, regardless of the the spring you put in it, because there will always be the pressure of the spring in the front resisting against the plunger itself.
