I was at a thrift store the other night, and was lucky enough to find two classic blasters: a SM3000, and a Big Salvo. This post will document the steps I took to get the Big Salvo up and running again. (Broken barrel advance fix coming soon).

The Salvo, when pumped, didn't seem to be doing anything at all, either pumping or holding air. So, first solution was to saw off the end of pump tube and replace the O-ring. Basic stuff.


Everything I read about the Big Salvo said that air output is huge, so I didn't bother plugging the pump.

The next repair involved the trigger. The BS has a small plunger with an o-ring on the end that passes over valves inside a tube. That causes the barrels to fire individually. This O-ring had the same problem as the pump o-ring, it had seemed to wear out and become too narrow. Problem was, I didn't have an o-ring to replace it. Being a lazy Saturday, I wanted to rig a way to fix it that didn't involve going anywhere and hunting through o-rings. The solution involved e-tape.


Since the o-ring hadn't rotted, I cut off a narrow strip and wound it around the channel. This gave the o-ring enough lift to make a good seal.

On to the last problem:


One of the barrel hoses had broken clean off the valve. The fix involved a short length of 1/8" brass tube.


I cut off the piece of tube with the broken pipe in it, and wrapped e-tape on the brass until it was a snug fit. I then drilled out the broken hole on the valve to 1/8". The fussy part of this fix is that the brass tubing can't be inserted too far into the valve, or it blocks the action. After I had it inserted correctly, I sealed it up with hot glue. (This fix is similar to my Wildfire fix.)

This gun Owns. As of right now, I've only cut off the air restrictors, and haven't replaced the barrels yet. But you can actually shove stock micros down the barrels, and they fly. I'm looking forward to brassing this beast...Splitfire on Steroids!

Believe me, you should have plugged the pump. A plugged pump can make for 150'+ ranges, meanwhile without plugging it ranges don't pass 100'. The OP valve kicks in at about 16 pumps. Also, stick with long barrels (at least 12 inch) for maximum range. I know about this gun owning, I have an awesome one myself. Here's mine:

It has been known to hit 160' on 60 pumps, but that defeats the ROF purpose, so I usually use 20 pumps for 125 ' ranges.

Eh, I might crack it back open and plug the pump, but that gets into the debate of what constitutes usable ranges, and what would get banned at most wars. Having four shots at 100' with only 10 pumps is great. Bigger ranges would begin to seem like a four-shot Titan...just too much power.

They're absolutely worth the price. They're a good combination of range and rate of fire. Toys-R-Us has them for $20 and amazon has them for about $15.

What if you plugged the pump and only pumped it like 4 times? I don't have one, but I'm just wondering. And maybe getting one.

It was worth the price I paid - $1.50. But it's definitely worth the new price, seeing as how you can't get Splitfires or AT2ks anymore...and I'd definitely put it in a class with those blasters. Although, I've never actually seen one in the store.

As far as plugging the pump, and just not pumping it as many times; I still hesitate, because you could do the same thing with a Titan, say you'd not pump it as many times, and it'd still be banned at any war.

I'd be curious to hear from everyone else, as far as plugging the pump on a Big Salvo; does it make it too powerful, and would it banned? Based on the results bogbob got, I'd think yes, but I wonder what everyone else says.

I owned a Big Salvo and then I sold it.

I loved the gun at first but in wars, it seemed like right when all of your barrels are empty, you are screwed.

It is a very cool gun but I like the SF better.

Carbon, what size o-ring did you use for the pump, because my new one has that same problem and it would help me to know. The inner and outer diameters would be fine, but if you have the brand and number that would be nice to have as well.

There are a couple of things I'd like to know about the Big Salvo:
1) Can you re-pmump the first air tank even if you didn't use the rest of the air from the tanks yet?
2) How many pumps does it take to get a range of, let's say, 90 ft.?

I also want to get this gun, but I've heard that it doesn't always work out of the box. Oh yeah, and how big is it compared to a hornet?

1) No, unfortunately, although I've never had a problem with it in battle.
2) I normally give it about 10 pumps and it goes plenty far with megas in the stock barrels. So I'd say 8-10, maybe less with micros and new barrels.
3) Slightly larger in most dimensions, but not enough to get in the way.
