Planned to try this as soon as replacement magazines became available, so I went ahead and attempted it today with positive results. This was already done successfully by Dark Shrimp, but without a write-up.
Here's what you end up with. The mags were painted prior to combining them to show where one half ends and the other begins.
Posted Image
And here's what it looks like in the Longshot.
Posted Image
1. First step is to figure out where to cut. Measurements will be mentioned when they're needed.
2. REMOVE THE SCREWS AND SPRINGS FROM BOTH MAGAZINES. Forget to do this and you will ruin the spring by cutting through it and then you will have to wind your own later.
Posted Image
3. Cut the two mag halves to the needed dimensions using a table saw or band saw with a rip fence. For the best possible joint between the two you need a tool that can cut square and straight.
The magazine that will end up being the bottom half needs to be cut to 4" in height. The magazine that will end up as the top half of the magazine needs to be cut to 4-1/4" in height.
4. Use an X-acto knife to deburr the inside edges of both halves. Both haves will need to be smooth on the join to prevent the follower from catching.
5. Insert the follower into the top half of the mag and tape it to it's highest possible location.
Posted Image
6. Line up the inside lips of the two halves and hold firm. The inside surface needs to be as seamless as possible.
7. Apply IPS Weld-On plastic solvent adhesive #4 or #3 to the joint with a syringe and hold with light pressure for 5 minutes. Alternatively any super glue will work, but make sure not to get any residue on the inside. Let the super glue cure for the next 3 hours.

IPS Weld-on is available through mcmaster (part# 7517A1) in 4-oz or 1-pint tins. It's easiest to apply using a 3cc syringe, but a natural hair paintbrush works well also. It's very watery in consistency and therefore works itself into crevices readily. If you want to order syringes mcmaster sells those in packs of 12 (part# 7510A651) and the blunt needle to go with them (part# 6710A11).
You can also get syringes through pet/veterinary supply, but make sure to get the 3cc size. Anything larger is likely to dispense WAY too much solvent.
Posted Image
8. Combine the two springs using 10-32 screws, hex nuts, and washers. Do not tighten them all the way, and if you use metal screws and nuts you may have to apply thread-lock or use self-locking hex nuts.
Alternatively you can wind your own spring using the original springs as a template. Then insert the spring into the new magazine from the bottom split.
Posted Image
9. Reinstall the screws.
10. If you want to reinforce the magazine there's plenty of external surface area you can add plastic to
Posted Image
And now you have a magazine that can hold 12 darts. Trying to fit 13 in the mag deforms the darts too much and can cause jams.

The little critters of nature, they don't know that they're ugly. That's very funny, a fly marrying a bumble bee. I told you I'd shoot, but you didn't believe me. Why didn't you believe me?

Very nice job. I was thinkin about doing this but I wasn't sure. I think I will. Any problems I should expect, run in to? Very nice CaptainSlug!

+ Finding short enough 10-32 screws could prove annoying. Smaller screws (#6-32 or #8-32) may work but you'll have to use thread lock or self-locking hex nuts and washers with them. Tightening the screws/nuts all the way will inhibit the flexing of that section of the spring
+ MAKE SURE to tape the follower in the top half. It's quite difficult to insert it once the two halves are fused.
+ The bottom half has to be cut to 4 inches in height. Any taller than that and you'll have the lip on the inside that keeps the follower from popping out. Only now it will keep it from advancing to the new top of the combined unit.

THANK YOU!!!

I've been really needing a decent write-up of this, so I could do it myself without fear of destroying my clips.

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

As soon as I can get ahold of some 0.022" or 0.032" wire I'll work on making a winding jig template for making my own springs for these. The combined spring work okay, but a custom wire may allow me to fit 13-14 darts in the mag without them getting smooshed.
Obviously stefans feed more comfortably in the longer mag than stock darts and deform less readily.

I already reinforced my clips with some extra plastic and will post pictures of that later tonight.

Awesome!

Now if I want to fire stefans, would I just do what The Inventor Guy did or do you have something better to suggest?

Very nice, way more feasible than your mags from scratch, only because of the availability of the original mags.

To use shorter length darts you will probably want to modify the follower a little so that you can add a spacer to the inside of the magazine. Later tonight I'll cut a notch out of one of my left-over followers and take a picture to demonstrate what I'm thinking might work best.

Just some simple reinforcement can be added to the outside easily using strips of plastic.

Edit: Ordered a spool of 0.032" wire so I can make new springs.

I got my replacement magazines from hasbro a few days ago, so I too will be making more. Along with custom springs which I haven't gotten around to winding yet.

How did you get the cut so level CS? I cut mine with a dremel, and even with my dremeling skill I had to take an electric sander to the clip to get it even.

I made the cut using my table saw. Your difficulty is precisely why I recommended using a tool that includes a rip fence.

Made two more today. These are really easy to make with my tablesaw.

I am having some difficulty winding springs. Not sure how to go about hardening the springs after I've wound them.

And just for laughs. NO you cannot store a double-length magazine in the stock without making the gun extremely awkward.

CaptainSlug, when you mentioned hardening the springs, do you mean like heat-treating or tempering them, giving them more flexibility without permanently deforming their shape?

It may be that I simply bought the wrong kind of wire. I've tried heat treating it, but it refuses to harden enough to be a usable spring.

how hot did you heat it? try cooling it in a heavy oil, it might help increase the flexibility of the wire.

I'm a semi-noob, so this may be a dumb question, but would it work to use a hacksaw and then just straighten it out with a file and a hobby knife?

If you use a hacksaw to cut the clips you'll have to use it with a miter box.

If you can keep the magazines steady and squared in the mitre box you'll actually get a better result than you would otherwise with a bandsaw, scrollsaw, or dremel.

Sorry to keep asking dumb questions, but I've got another one. How the heck did you get the two halves apart? I unscrewed it, but it seems like the top halves are glued or clipped together somehow. I pulled pretty hard and even tried prying it open, but nothing besides breaking the damn thing seems like it's going to work.

I didn't bother trying to split them open all the way. You can pry them open enough to remove or install the spring and if you need to install or remove the follower you should do that before gluing the two clips together.
