My style is dictated by the circumstances. Most of the time, if I have other guys on my team with higher ROF weapons, I'll hang back with my maxshot and pick people off from range, but i usually have two Nitefinders at my side, so im not averse to getting close to shoot people. It all depends on how the battle is shaping up. Then again, it is fun to hear the scream when someone is hit with a maxshot from less than 20 feet away.

I also covered my teammates and if someone was reloading and in danger of being shot I would usually try to hold back the people that were shooting at my teammate.
I also used a Hornet with just the barrel posts removed and only used the blast button. I would wait for someone to reload, then rush them and try (almost 100% successfully too) to blast them with all six shots.
Rushing people just seems the most fun to me and charging into battle gets me excited. It's what keeps me a Nerfer through and through.
So, my playing style is basically wait for someone to shoot, rush up to them and try to run them down, shoot a ton of darts at them and run away to reload. I lack versatility in that I can only use one or two kinds of guns effectively, but I think I make up for it with how good I am with those guns.
It sounds like you could benefit immensely from a Big Salvo. I mean, it's a hornet with one barrel at-a-time capabilities for crying out loud... And you can load multiple darts into barrels to fire ~3ish darts at a time, or 12 at once...shoot, your playing style is like a perfect match of one of my clan member's...

I like the Longshot honestly. Id use it without the second blaster added to the end for accuracy, and then keep a couple smaller weapons for closer combat
