[boltsniper]

So this pistol has been in the works for about 3 months now. Back in April I started designing this pistol and soon started fabrication. The pistol came along really quickly and I got it about 90% complete and just stopped work on it. I kept it under wraps for a long time only discussing it with my administrative team on Boltsniper.com. Ompa and Carbon were the only ones I know of that knew about it. I discussed it with Ompa wuite a bit and he ran with ideas and built a successful pistol of his own. His pistol is quite impressive and you should definitely check it out if you haven`t already.

BS-9 NERF TACTICAL SIDEARM

This gun is a magazine fed slide action pistol. It can hold 5 rounds when fully loaded. The magazine will hold 4 rounds and you can alos have one chambered for a total of 5. The pistol uses a nested brass bolt/breach system to cycle the darts through the gun. There are no shells! A first for me. The magazine is non-detachable and is loaded through a port in the rear of the magazine in the trigger guard. To load the gun you depress the follower with the actuation rod protruding from the right side. When fully depressed the loading port is opened and darts are inserted until the magazine is full. the follower is then released and the pistol is ready to go.





The construction and operation of the systems are very similar to the SCAR and the GNS.

The image below shows the barrel and bolt system that is the heart of the pistol.



The image below shows the fire control group. It is very similar to the system in the SCAR only smaller. The trigger is actually an integral part of the trigger plate rather than bolted on.

This design, in my opinion, has much greater potential for the Nerfing community than did the FAR. After looking over the pictures of the internals and whatnot, it is pretty obvious that construction of a variant of this weapon would be relatively easy, but there's something even better about this simplistic design than that. It seems to me that modifying existing spring-powered blasters to accomodate a few extra parts (a bolt, slide, breech, and magazine of some sort) would be a viable alternative to building one of these from the ground up. I myself have begun work on such a modification to one of my NiteFinders.

Oh, right about those clip inlets/ that fixed one. Do you have those specialy made or somethin'? Or do you buy them or what...
ANYWAYS... God... NOT FAIR!!!! Oh how are you getting thos like perfectly straight/smooth cuts? Like for the top that slides back, the channels cut for those screws are pretty persect.

Haha! No, it's real. I inlaid red paint in the text to give the gun some color rather than just black....

All the cuts are just freehand with a dremel. After doing it so much you get pretty good at it. I guess I have a reasonably steady hand as well. I freehanded the red paint in the text as well.

I really like how you implemented the bolt action, and I'm glad you didn't have to deal with any breech jamming issues for lack of shells. I never supposed that brass was accurate enough to avoid jamming problems. You also made an excellent choice in priming action, and came up with some very good ideas to avoid binding in the clip. Although I'm a bit sad that you didn't solve the small-scale axisymmetrical catch problem, you obviously didn't need to. Besides, the only obvious solution seems to be proportionally tolerant machining, and wear on plastic parts easily reverses that.

I dare say you've instantiated one of the most prominent and challenging of homemade Nerf weaponry daydreams. I might have to get back in the game and make my own BS-9!

It wouldn`t be that hard to do and Ompa proved that by doing it. I built that plunger all the way up to to the catch and maybe one day I`ll tackle it and install it. Nothing needs to change on the pistol to switch form a shafted plunger to the shalftess one.

Zero Talent; easiest way to solve that problem is to use a washer as the catch face, and a thick metal nail as the catch pin. It's like a combination of Carbon's plunger, Bolt's catch pin, and some other unknown force. You just have to make sure everything is beveled; especially the back-end of the plunger. That's so it would ensure that it goes in the center of the spring when it goes back, and that it goes into the region where the catch engages in the proper orientation.

I love the loading mechanism. Such a cool fixed magazine. It's much sleeker and probably more efficient than cassette tapes with cardboard followers *wink*.

I really like the idea of the rear-loading fixed magazine. It reminds me of an old Colt .44 pistol. Even though the Colt was a revolver, it was a fixed cylinder that didn't rotate out, adn you had to load it via a rear-facing feed port.


Normally I'd ask whats next, but I'm not gonna bother this time: it's probably classified until further notice.

A washer would fit the bill for the axisymmetric criteris. On the FAR I did just that cause I didn`t want to deal with indexing the plunger. It does work very well. I just didn`t feel like finding or making a washer for the job on top of the other design obstacles I had at the time.

But Ompa defeinitely proved it will work and work well.

Keep in mind though, if all you have is a dremel, sanding down a washer so that it has the right fit is a very, very tedious process.

Bolty, you've done it again, and am I impressed. I had a very similar design recently, but the barrel moved instead of the bolt, which caused the stefan to slide forward, making it impractible (sp?). I see you have solved that problem, and jeez is this gun ever a genius design. My hat's off to you bud. One question though, is there a gap between the barrel and the PVC sheath around it, so that the barrel can slide right in, or is there a notch along the top length of the bolt? If there is the gap around the barrel, does that mean it is only attached to the sheath at the front of the barrel? Thanks for all your help!

Yes there is a gap between the actual barrel and the sheath portion. And yes the barrel is free floated from teh front only. The bolt has to be able to pass over the barrel all the way around. It is very sturday. There is a full inch of barrel that is bonded to the assembly so there is no issue of a moving barrel or inaccuracy on that part.

I've already said this, but the gun is absolutely beautiful. Excellent work, as always. I might have missed it, but I don't think anyone mentioned using sheet metal for a clip. Why not? You can cut it in a flash with a dremel and a cutting wheel. Also, Zero, did you just randomly bring yourself back from the dead, or did I miss something? Good to see you, anyhow.

Hey Boltsniper, I still dont get how you load the bullets in the magazine. Is there a hole infront of the trigger?

X10, most people don't have brakes that could handle a decent thickness of sheet metal, and SLA still looks much cooler.
