Just an idea, but what if someone put little spring loaded wings into the sides of a stefan? You would fold them in, load the dart, and when you fired it, the wings would pop out and cause the dart to glide. Theoretically, it would get better ranges.

Or, we could keep using the darts that have been the standard for 10 years and settle for the ranges we have now and not waste ten seconds compressing springs every time we try to load our guns.

Really, experimenting and ideas are fine, but think about the idea before presenting it here; I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but that idea just sucks.

actually i like it, it sounds like it would get a few extra feet. try it out and post the ranges. and if gets a few extra feet, describe exactly what you did to make it work.

SGT. loser/asshole whatever,

The practicality of 1/2 FBR with wings really is overlooking the obvious. Do real bullets have wings? What does? Take a look at a tomahawk missile and its wings as a size comparison to bullets.

I've given some thought to this idea as well and you're thinking on too small of a scale. Now if you were to make lets say a titan missile with spring loaded wings you could have something on your hands which could kick ass.

Think larger grasshopper

SGT. loser

that will never get old.

The concept sounds like waay too much work and it would most likely just hurt your dart's performance rather than improve it. now I challenge you to prove me wrong.

If you want my advice, I say go for it if you want to. However, I fully expect your only results to be a few stefans that get poor range and many hours of your life wasted. If you have fun doing it, then I suppose it was worth the time, but I seriously don't expect you to get any results.

Wings would add drag, and with an object of so little weight the extra drag would lead to instability. And that means as soon as the wings open the dart will effectively hit an aerodynamic brick wall.
Very small and very light objects generally cannot "fly" or glide on conventional wings. There's a size threshold at which you can no longer make an aerodynamically stable wing.

Nerf ammo is also traveling so comparatively slow that it's quite difficult to do anything to improve over-all performance on a consistent level. A better use of your time would be practicing your dart consistency and adding as good of a cone of glue as you can possible make on the end of each dart.

I tried wings once (except they didn't pop out) and it just spun into the ground. But I had a stock gun, so you can try the pop out wings with modded gun, but it would probably get the same results.

First off, did you ever think that spring powered wings would make the dart a tad to heavy? And if they did not make them heavy how practical would they be in a war? You would be spending the time it takes for a guy with a pocket shot to pump it up and shoot you trying to get the dang thing loaded, I mean unless you had some kind of speed loader made up of a tube and plunger maybe that would help but that may not still overcome the fact that the dart will be to heavy to leave the barrel.

Aye, not only have you a less aerodynamic dart, but you also have the wings pushing against the inside of the barrel while the dart is on it's way out. I'm not even sure if the dart would make it out the barrel at a decent speed.

Then your stefan would go like 5 MPH. It would glide and hit a person? The whole purpose of a goood stefan is to get max. velocity...

Even if it wasn't too heavy, the wings deployed correctly on a consistant basis, and the wings came out correctly (parralel to the ground), how would gliding help?

The purpose of a dart is to hit the person you shot it at. Hitting someone who knows where you are is hard enough at 60 feet. I mean, if you really need extra lift to keep the dart going going so much further, it would be going so slow, and with so little force, that a person could either dodge it, or get hit and not even know.

This is the reason people do not like nerf balls: They can go very far, but not consistantly, accuratley, or quickly.

It's a good idea, but sadly, many good ideas have no purpose in Nerf. Like sights, or laser pointers, this idea would not give any advantage, and might even be a disadvantage.

I like the concept, but it wouldn't be practical.

Apparently, no one has owned or shot an AirTech Jet Squadron.

Basically, it was a glorified Blastfire-type system, in a case that looked like an F-16 fighter, and shot four fixed-delta-wing darts (micro-sized) from four stations mounted on top of the wing structure.

It sucked.

Heavily.

Obviously, Hasbro learned that winged projectiles are a novelty, but not too appealing to the young 'uns. I took my son's one and tried to make a cool weapon, only to ruin it beyond hope. It's serving a practical purpose in our local landfill.

So...that said, I'd like to see you make a spring-loaded, micro-sized, winged type dart, to be fired from a Nerf-type weapon, and provide nice pictures and maybe even a video of it in use. I'd be willing to give you a modified NiteFinder, postage paid, if you can pull this off.

There's been a tad too many topics on ideas and fantasies, and not enough practical goods being pumped out.

NerfHaven needs less dreaming and more benchwork.

C'mon, people.

Yeah, that's it.

I'm going to rebuild one of my "good" NFs if you do pull it off. We need pictures, step-by-step tutorial, a video, and a follow-up.

Meiser5 has made the best point so far. Stefans with retractable, spring powered wings are not easily designed. To fit a mechanism like that in a 1/2" FBR tube just does not seem feasible. In order to accomplish something like that, you would pretty much have to reduce the foam part of a stefan by 90%. Which begs the question, would it really still be nerf if there was just a small foam tip. Not to mention, I doubt 99% of the nerfers on the board have access to the tools you would need to accomplish this.

I'll back Piney up here by adding in one of my old school NiteFinders as well.

I'll add another thought as far as difficulties involved: a wing will only provide benefit if it is parallel to the ground. As such, you'll need a way to properly index the dart before firing. Otherwise, I can imagine the wings doing a good job of causing the dart to fly wildly off course, if not crash outright. Add the fact that these would be time consuming to make and load...well, you got your work cut out for you.

As an interesting side note, I found a patent online for a model airplane whose wings snap open after it was thrown, allowing it to glide; the patent even refers to the airplane as a "dart".

No, I'm not going to post the link...find it yerself.

I have to agree with NerfMonkey in his first reply minus the part of it sucking. I don't think that this idea sucks, I just say that you should do it, try it, attempt it whatever...then post. I beleive that opinions as facts in nerf at BS. I also beleive that statement is becoming a trademark of mine. Just because some thinks it will do good, does not say that it is good...so why ask if it's a good idea? Attempt it first, and THEN get a fact. If it's good and people call it stupid, THEN you can prove them wrong and say HAHAHAHA YOU LAMERS IT WORKES GREAT THE BIG 111111

So go out and make it first...then come back. Until then, we don't want to hear it.

For the next 3 ifs in this topic:

UP!

No!

Try it first!

Don't wanna hear it, go make YOUR idea, post it and then come back!

GO OUTSIDE YOU FORUM WHORE!

I'm done.

If a mechanism could be made to load the darts in from the back, the shape would fold the wings in automatically without taking any more time.

Don't know how that could be done though.

Someone better convince me not to suspend the four posters above mine, as well as Sgt. loser for not producing any goods after 90 days.

bigpinecone, I'll give you a friendly piece of advice...if you hadn't read the Code of Conduct, you really ought to catch up on that before posting again. It'll save you lots of grief.

There's a part there that mentions not bringing back an old topic thread unless you have something useful to say. While I can understand enthusiasm, "Rock on" isn't necessarily as useful as say, perhaps, a prototype dart with retractable wings that you have made. If not, it's best to just sit and be excited without adding to your post count.

General Cole, I'm one PM away from doing the deed. Cool down, you're a good Nerfer and such, but horrible at following instructions on a discussion forum.

lastmanalive, you are bringing back your old self. If you don't want to see BS on the boards, begin by restraining yourself from some of your own incomplete "projects". I've heard (not just from you, but from many) of plans, intentions, and of ideas. That's not what NerfHaven was meant to be founded on. It was founded on sound ideas and concepts that were taken to completion, or at least showing evidence of forward progress. That's why folks like Boltsniper, Carbon, Carrtoon, Captain Slug, Renegade, Forsaken_Angel24, Falcon, and many others have developed a keen reputation amongst the team at NH, as well as the admiration of many members, as you know.

Look at Nite_Walker. He just joined within a couple months, and he's already contributing something interesting. Crude perhaps, but it works for him, and it's some PROOF that he's hackin' away. Puggy is another maniac, posting some pretty weird stuff...but better weird stuff than just "I'm gonna", or "I wanna", or "I am submitting this SHITTY MSPaint...."

Okay, you guys have me on a roll now....watch your back.
