Edit: everything is ordered. I just need to start making cut template sheets.

And I have three more sheets for the drum and clip parts.

So I take it you might be using a bandsaw and scroll saw for the sheet components, right?

Yep pretty much. None of the interacting pieces are really square in dimension so I can't use the table saw for anything except cutting the tubing to length. The bandsaw will be invaluable for precisely trimming the smaller pieces. So I take it you might be using a bandsaw and scroll saw for the sheet components, right?
I'll try to make a detailed assembly write-up as I go along.

I'm currently thinking about dumping the drum magazine in favor of the 10-round straight clips. I would however like opinions on this.
The straight magazines could be made much more compact if the gun doesn't need to support the drum magazine.

Anyway, the point is that i'm in favor of the drum, but the clip may be better if the drum is really heavy. It also depends on have much they each weigh. The weight:darts ratio is crucial (really? I don't know)
My money is on the drum.

Maybe I shouldn't worry about the size of the clips so much.

It's clip system is much like your stairstep method. I used gravity which probably wasn't the best idea. The rails are nails (poet and didn't know it).

The front foregrip and stock are foldable and the forward barrel and it's mount are also removable. The clip locking tooth and advancing mechanism are now the same part. This reduces the part count and reduces the mechanism so that it's only interacting with one side of the clip. This makes it easier for either style of clip to be removed.
The grip, trigger, and action pin are stationary. The side covers on the body of the gun slide backwards to prime the plunger.
The folding stock can be strapped to the user's shoulder so that the weapon can be primed by simply extending forward the arm the gun is held in by 6 inches. Returning to the normal holding distance returns the side covers to their original position, which advances the magazine by one round.
When the foregrip and stock are folded and the forward barrel are removed the total length of the gun is only 15 inches.
