Ok guys, as many of you will know, you love your SM5000. I love mine. But mine needs fixing and I need some help. I can get pics, but I don' think its needed. This will be easy if you already have a SM5000. Without opening up the gun, if you look in the front where the air tank is, theres the black rubber thing, with the green thing in the middle. When the trigger is pulled, this is pulled back, thus releasing air. Mine however after fired 6-7 times, it gets crooked and the normally the green dot is in the center, it ends up on one of the sides. When it gets like this, air just leaks out. I never over pumped my SM5000, most was at like 5 pumps, and it just does this. To fix it, I have to re-center it with my pinky. Not very battle effective, specially sinec I plan on relocating the tank. I have had my SM5000 since amazon had them in stock in like 1999 or 2000, and it worked up untill 2003. I just have been to lazy to fix it. The only mod to it was the Sniper5000 style mod, glueing the spring and firing pin together (same effect as the straw thing), plugging the over-pressure valve, and I had a crayola barrel with a 10'' long PVC barrel. Got around 110-130 ft. with Airjets. Please help me out guys. Over at NerfHQ, someone said to cut the entire tank open, do something (i forgot) and then reglue the tank together. I never tried it. If there is anyway of fixing this, it would greatly be appriciated. If not, it looks like I will just get rid of the internals and integrate SS2 internals into it.

I had this exact same problem. What I did was saw open the tank, re-center it then put it back together with some major plumbers goop. It worked for a while but the same problem happened again. I wasn't very into nerf back then so I just gave up and tossed the whole thing out. That's one thing I greatly regret doing. One thing I thought of doing was centering it then putting a washer into the the plunger shaft to hold the ring down. Good luck with it man.

I don't have a sm5000 but I have an suggestion for you. What if you made a track for the end of the firing pin(the place where the trigger connects to the pin). The track would keep the pin from moving up,left or right. Cutting the tank open should be your last option.

I don't think its the pin itself that is moving to the left and right. I think the tip of it ( the black rubber seal) is moving, not the firing pin, so I am thinking of opening 'er up, and glueing it center to the pin again because I think it works like this:
________________
|
------------------)
____________ |___

crude but it gets the job done. The ____ on both sides is the nozzle of the air tank, the "-----" line is the firing pin, and the parenthesis and the two lines are the rubber seal, and I think when it fires it goes like this:

________________________
\
------------------------\
__________________\______

And it lets air slip through on the sides. I am not exactly sure, but I think its how it works

EDIT: Didn't look right when it posted because it won't take just a bunch of spaces but if you line up the top line with the parenthesis and other line in the first photo, and line up all the "\"'s together in the second photo, you get it.

This explains better

Alright, I think that you have a problem with the firing pin. When you open up an SM5k tank, you find 4 pieces. A spring, 2 green plastic circlular pieces, and the black rubber seal.

I've included my own labled internal pictures. A note is that I am missing the circular green piece that holds the black rubber seal.

Now, see that hook? I think your green disc isn't holding onto that, due to the spring slipping out of place. Without adaquate pressure from that spring, that rubber, and the disc are free to pivot on that hook. One solution would be to rotate the firing pin until the hook points upwards, so that motion is limited to left and right. Another solution would be to try to fix the spring, by either opening the tank or using a small screw driver to reach in and poke it into place.

If you need directions on how to proper open an airtank, PM me or post with the question.

I hope this helps in some small way.

Thanks Black, that explains alot, I was kinda close, but that hook now makes alot more sense. I will try rotating the pin and taking like 10-15 shots to see if it moves. If not, thanks so much for your help. If it doesn't work still, I will PM and we can continue this conversation there. Thanks again. If you have anything to add anybody, post here.

You're welcome. If you really need it, and I feel like it, I can go searching behind my work bench for the plastic I'm missing and the black rubber. They kinda shot off as the spring decompressed, and I never bothered looking for them.

I'll get back to a PM within a day or so.

The only thing I don't get is, does the little aqua colored T peice go after the spring of before. It looks like in the next picture down, it is attached to the tank part, but the spring coming after it, how would that work? Wouldn't it have the T peice in fron so when the rod is pulled, it would compress the spring? Because the way it shows, the spring would but up against the seal, unless its backwards.

EDIT: Woah! You meant you just cut your SM5k tank open just now? As you said behind my workbench! Wow, I feel loved, or was it already cut? Also, is it hard to plumber goop or use some other glue to re-attach it. Will it retain the same pressure? You are dedicated. Props to BW.

Yeah, I have 2 5ks, so why not dedicate one to helping others?

Now, yes, the T-shaped piece is one end of the spring compression, and the piece I'm missing is the other side. The black O-ring seals with firing pin where it exits the back of the tanks.

I'll get to looking for that piece and take a picture.

The reason the T-shaped piece is out of place is so that you could see it better.

Same thing happened here. Did you or your friend pump more than 4-5 times? a friend of mine said, "Look! I can pump it 7 times!" Then, when it fired, a little black seal came off the green peice. If you have the same problem I did, you do have to open the valve. Also, if you have the same problem, the center green dot you refer to on the seal is not the center of the green bit shifting, but instead, the black rubber seal moving around. Like this, it will still fire, but not well, and the more pressure, the higher the cane that the rubber bit will get shot out, because the air will only escape from the tiny hole.
Once opened, epoxy the rubber back on. this should prevent this from ever occuring again.
I haven't totally fixed my valve because it's been too cold to use goop, and I can't use it indoors, but here's what I did and wrote up when this happened to me.
The valve.
There are so many pics you should know what to expect when you open the valve.
Hope this helps.
