They take up too much space, and some older systems cannot effectively load images, causing them to freeze or slow down even more. (I also don't think this was worth reviving for such a simple question).

No one is forcing you to post anything here. The other sites allow you to do almost anything you want with your forum profile...go there and knock yourself out.

Please make me an admin. I've read 3 of Barney's posts and he needs to be banned. Back sassing for not "allowing" custom avatars and sigs is grounds enough for an ass whoppin'.
