I was looking around on this web site (disceet.com) and saw 3ds max. It looks like the samething as gmax. Has anyone used 3ds max ever? Is it a good program or does it suck?

Hey I'm glad someone else has seen it. I came across it awhile ago and pretty much had the same question.

When you die, if you get a choice between going to regular heaven or pie heaven, choose pie heaven. It might be a trick, but if it's not, mmmmmmm, boy

For 3D modeling purposes, yes.
For general graphics use, Photoshop is awesome-er.

Do you recommand 3ds max?

I know many hundreds, and thousands of people who swear by it. Just check out any abstract artist on Deviant Art and you can be sure its a render in 3DSMAX thats been edited in Photoshop.

3d Studio Max is a big name in the professional world. Its like Photoshop or AutoCAD.

Gmax and 3DSMax are by the same company, and both share their interface and general toolset. However, 3DSMax has more features and allows for more export types. Gmax was created to allow creation and modification of game models for a few feature games, such as C&C: Renegade and Quake III. I used it because it was free, and never really bothered to get 3DSMax, though I suspect the jump between the two is more of a step, as Gmax seems to be a marketing tool for 3DSMax.

What sucks is it's just a modelling tool. I'm a big fan of Unigraphics and Autocad now.

Have you ever used 3Ds Max? DO you think I should just forget it and find something else or should I get it?
I want it to just modle things.

3DSMax is pretty standard and easy to steal. Unless you plan on getting seriously into 3D modelling and are planning on purchasing a software set, I'd go with 3DSMax. Otherwise, probably Maya. I don't do much serious 3D Modelling, so I'm not the one to ask about this if the situation above is true.

Oh ok, you are saying that I shouldn't get 3Ds max unless I am doing something really importent with it. Where do you get Maya?

I think he meant it the other way round. If you are just tooling around at home go with 3ds. If you are going into a professional place where pirated software wouldnt be acceptable get Maya. Both are very good.

When you say "I just want to model things" what do you mean? What types of models you are creating makes a big difference and gmax may not suit your needs.

This is the internet. Everything is free.
(Though I dont support piracy of software being used for things that may be distributed in any way.)

By free he meant easy to steal. 3DSMax is pretty popular, so as I said, finding it free is really easy. Gnutella software, Bit Torrent, arbitrary FTP sites... Really easy, if you don't mind the morals.

You'll probably spend about the same amount of negligible time getting and setting up a stolen copy of 3DSMax or a free copy of Gmax. Just the moral issue.

3DS Max is a HIGHLY professional program for 1337 modellers! Has anybody here ever played WarCraft 3? Blizzard used 3DS Max to model everything in Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft, and they are currently using it to model StarCraft: Ghost. As for pirating 3DS Max, it's just like pirating MP3's, and pirating MP3's, well this pic speaks for itself:

"Map" is pretty vague. Are you talking about a real map? A street map? Geographical map? Maybe a game map? Detail, sir, detail.
