Ever thought about using this in an Indoor War?

http://www.gunkatta.com/home.htm

My Friend and I are going to try this as a new kind of tactic.
Either it works or it will hurt pretty bad.

Wierd.Looks pretty interesting, but I don't think I'd be able to do it since my upper body is as stiff as a telephone pole.I'll try it though.

The site is based on the teachings of... a movie.

I'll call bullshit on gun kata.

It's a good idea that even the movie paid no attention to. Standing in the center of a room, surrounded by armed opponents is not statistically the safest position. It just looks a bit cool when the protagonist in said position moves his arms robotically and shows a whole bunch of muzzle flashes to light up the darkened room.

I'd rather if they had seriously thought about the Gunkata instead, even if the protagonist had to lie on his belly at some point.

So indeed, good idea, but only if you feel like forging the art yourself, through years of blaster battles.

I've seen that website many times. Hasn't been updated in...close to two years. Same ol' video.

The idea of gun-kata is intruiging, but I doubt it having any sort of viable place in Nerf given the current guns, and the nature of which it was meant to be used.

That site is retarded. No way you try and whip out crazy "karate" (in the loosest sense) moves with GUNS. At that distance, you'd be better off finding something to hide behind, and aim instead of flailing your arms. Sure you might occasionally hit people, if you were using, say, a machine gun, but going against anyone who was actually aiming you'd be toast in two seconds.

as cxwq says, it's based off a movie (Equilibrium). a bad ass movie, but a movie nonetheless.

that aside, the characters who employed the gun katas trained literally their whole lives, from the time they were old enough to go to school.
the concept is sound. rote learning of the positions means it becomes muscle memory, so you don't have to think about performing the movements at all. it becomes, quite literally, like walking; it's almost a dance, really.

unless you're gonna drop out of school and wait at least ten years to employ the gun katas, i'd say it's best left as a technique for use in kickass killin' people movies.

Yeah you all say that shit, but just wait till your backed up in a warehouse full of expensive art. Oh they know you haven't dosed in years, they feel it baby. Then when your stairing down two barrels with a Gramaton Cleric in front of you, remember those words, "There's no such thing as Gunkata". And pray to god your right.

Equilibrium owns you.

My Friend and I stopped the training today after the third move because IT'S IMPOSSIBLE. All I now have from this is a stinging sensation in my arm.

Cxwq, you are right. Gunkata in Real Life IS Bullshit.

But The Movie kicked Ass.

Gunkata is bullshit, but reflexes are not. I have this friend who does all this hapmudo sutff, and hes amazing at it. Anyways, he can block a dart from 2 feet away with a 1/2 inch pvc pipe. Not every single time, but it is pretty amazing. He was at DCNO, he was the tall paintballer with red hair. He doesnt like nerf though :/

As crappy as the class is, Cleric is a really cool name for a gun.

Just thought I'd add that.

alien, how the sam hill would you know if it's impossible? IT TAKES YEARS. YEARS AND YEARS. you can't possibly expect to do it all after three positions. you can't expect to do any of it after such a short time, actually.

i only want the cleric edition nite finder if it has tetragrammaton muzzle blasts.

You would need to be a GOOD shot to hit someone while moving you arms around like a wound deer...

Well... I suppose it's possible to do a gunkata... Frankly, the 'position with the least statistical chance of being hit' is around behind a bulletproof wall. Moving through various martial art stances, cool as it may look, really won't do much for your statistical odds of survuiving. And, as Ironman pointed out, flailing your arms about really isn't the best way to hit someone, especially if they're also trying to reduce their statistical odds of being hit. But, that's drifting off topic.

I agree, standing the right way (side-on to the target, possibly crouching or behind cover) will reduce the odds of your being hit, simply because it makes you a smaller target. However, anyone who has worked with a handgun enough will still be able to blow your head off.

As THIRST said, reflexes work. Especially when you're looking over the top of cover. I've seen several people avoid being nerfed because they ducked at the right time. However, standing in the open, using statistical 'science', does not. It might reduce the chance of your being hit, but it won't do it by much. Sure, I'll be 1/1,000th less likeley to hit you... But is that really going to do you much good when the odds are close to 8/10 that I will hit?

Moving around to avoid being shot depends on you being close enough to the attacker that your movement significantly changes the angle of a successful shot.

If you're that close and you have years of martial arts experience, wouldn't it make more sense to just fucking disarm the guy?

I dunno, guys...I keep seeing this scenario in my head.

Gunkata guy comes up to some gangstas, and starts doing all this Tai-Chi stuff with a 9 in each hand.

Gangsta whips out his own 9 and with one shot pops the Gunkata guy as he spins/ gyrates/ flies around in mid air stuff.

End scenario.

Shucks, I'm half Oriental, and I've seen enough martial arts to know that you DON'T need a handgun to properly disarm/ subdue a gun toting crook, especially given the usual level of firearm experience of the average criminal, and of course, the level of experience of the martial artist.

Perhaps the disclaimer at the bottom of the front page is an indicator that it really is just film-fed fantasy...but it wouldn't hurt to do it with Nerf guns, if that floats your boat.

I wouldn't. The neighbors would really think differently of me if I did.

EDIT; just saw cx's post....that's exactly what I meant.

I've been doing aikijutsu for a while now, it is a practical form of aikido. We do lots of gun disarming, but one thing to keep in mind:

The stupidest postition for an armed man with a gun is point blank at your forehead. That is the easiest way to avoid getting shot, and easiest way of disarming.

At 5-10 feet away, the gun is a no-can-defend weapon (if you are unarmed). Your best bet is to talk the guy out of shooting you, or run in zig zags to the safest cover (and you will probably get shot).

Even if you spent 20 years practicing gun kata, which is soley science fiction from equilibrium, at 10 feet away, I could shoot you no matter how good your reflexes and agility are. Done, you are dead, 20 years of your life wasted practicing a big heap of lies.

Now with nerf, thats a completely different story!

spoon's homie jason from chapman was talking to me about this gun kata shit and equilibrium and everything...he thought it was pretty sweet. anyway, he tried some of that stuff at RayNO, and only once did he actually successfully dodge a dart with a gun kata move. a couple times he dodged into bullets that would not have otherwise hit him. that jason guy is hardcore though, gun kata isn't his only crazy antic - first day nerfing ever he shot spoon in the face from 3 feet with a 2k, only guy other than a horseman i've seen use a manta ray successfully, he can shoot two at2ks with one hand....what a badass.

I just saw Equilibrium today on TV again and guess what?
There is a Nerf Blaster hidden in the Movie!
No Shit, I'm sure what I saw was a Ball Blaster.
I saw it in the scene where John Preston was walking down into this hidden room where he heard Beethoven for the first time.
