My Friend and I are going to try this as a new kind of tactic.
Either it works or it will hurt pretty bad.

I'll call bullshit on gun kata.

I'd rather if they had seriously thought about the Gunkata instead, even if the protagonist had to lie on his belly at some point.
So indeed, good idea, but only if you feel like forging the art yourself, through years of blaster battles.

The idea of gun-kata is intruiging, but I doubt it having any sort of viable place in Nerf given the current guns, and the nature of which it was meant to be used.

that aside, the characters who employed the gun katas trained literally their whole lives, from the time they were old enough to go to school.
the concept is sound. rote learning of the positions means it becomes muscle memory, so you don't have to think about performing the movements at all. it becomes, quite literally, like walking; it's almost a dance, really.
unless you're gonna drop out of school and wait at least ten years to employ the gun katas, i'd say it's best left as a technique for use in kickass killin' people movies.

I agree, standing the right way (side-on to the target, possibly crouching or behind cover) will reduce the odds of your being hit, simply because it makes you a smaller target. However, anyone who has worked with a handgun enough will still be able to blow your head off.
As THIRST said, reflexes work. Especially when you're looking over the top of cover. I've seen several people avoid being nerfed because they ducked at the right time. However, standing in the open, using statistical 'science', does not. It might reduce the chance of your being hit, but it won't do it by much. Sure, I'll be 1/1,000th less likeley to hit you... But is that really going to do you much good when the odds are close to 8/10 that I will hit?

If you're that close and you have years of martial arts experience, wouldn't it make more sense to just fucking disarm the guy?

Gunkata guy comes up to some gangstas, and starts doing all this Tai-Chi stuff with a 9 in each hand.
Gangsta whips out his own 9 and with one shot pops the Gunkata guy as he spins/ gyrates/ flies around in mid air stuff.
End scenario.
Shucks, I'm half Oriental, and I've seen enough martial arts to know that you DON'T need a handgun to properly disarm/ subdue a gun toting crook, especially given the usual level of firearm experience of the average criminal, and of course, the level of experience of the martial artist.
Perhaps the disclaimer at the bottom of the front page is an indicator that it really is just film-fed fantasy...but it wouldn't hurt to do it with Nerf guns, if that floats your boat.
I wouldn't. The neighbors would really think differently of me if I did.
EDIT; just saw cx's post....that's exactly what I meant.

The stupidest postition for an armed man with a gun is point blank at your forehead. That is the easiest way to avoid getting shot, and easiest way of disarming.
At 5-10 feet away, the gun is a no-can-defend weapon (if you are unarmed). Your best bet is to talk the guy out of shooting you, or run in zig zags to the safest cover (and you will probably get shot).
Even if you spent 20 years practicing gun kata, which is soley science fiction from equilibrium, at 10 feet away, I could shoot you no matter how good your reflexes and agility are. Done, you are dead, 20 years of your life wasted practicing a big heap of lies.
Now with nerf, thats a completely different story!

There is a Nerf Blaster hidden in the Movie!
No Shit, I'm sure what I saw was a Ball Blaster.
I saw it in the scene where John Preston was walking down into this hidden room where he heard Beethoven for the first time.
