Just wanted to see what kind of guitars you guys have, and what you think about them.

I recently picked up a beutiful Schecter C1-Elite for a super low price. Its packin' abalone binding on body, neck, and headstock, Grover tuners and 2 Duncan Designed humbuckers. This guitar also has a coil tap, which I believe is not mentioned, but makes for a good clean sound when splitting the bridge pick-up.

I only started playing guitar about half a year ago so I still have the cheap one I got in the Behringer starter pack, but I might be getting another one soon. If I had enough money I would get the C-1 semi-hollow but I'll probably just buy an Ibanez GSA60. I still have to work up a few hundred before I can get one though.

Are you in a band or do you just play alone?

My two loves are my Deluxe American Fender Jazz Bass, but in this color.

And my Jackson KVX-10 King (Flying) "V".

I'll be recording stuff soon, real soon, and I'll have it up for download for you guys if you're interested. I've been playing for about two and a half years now, but I'll admit bass is moreso where my talent lies.

I don't usually play alone, but I'm not exactly in a band. I've got some friends who play bass, guitar, and drums, and we just mess around alot.

My friends and I started a band a few weeks ago but we've just started writing songs. I might get some of our music on a site in while. And Evil, I'd definitely be interested in hearing some of your music.

That is one sweet guitar Dan. My brother plays the drums, so we have occasional jam sessions.

Yea, I've played with a couple different bands and they ranged in talent, music, and actual time I put into them. But after blowing through a few bands, and playing with probably close to two dozen different musicians in my immediate area, I've really come to the conclusion that some of the purest music you can write, is the music you write yourself, by yourself.

There's no substitution for the thrill of completing and performing a song with a band, but I believe my best work is the stuff I've been writing for the last few months. Again, I'm sure some of you guys who are interested will be hearing it relatively soon.

Hey, that's pretty and all but I know jack shit about guitars.

Which leads to my question. Say I wanted to buy a guitar, amp, and anything else I need to rock the fuck out. Say I wanted to spend somewhere in the $600-800 range for everything. I know I'm not going to get a fantastic guitar for that kinda cash so save me the elitist crap and give me some suggestions. However, if that's not enough money to get a decent guitar/amp/etc then tell me so I can save my money and spend it on a millipede upright instead.

If it's not already clear, I'm a guitar n00b.

If you're looking for something nice to learn on, I'd go with a cheaper Fender Stratocaster, somewhere around $350. And I'd also look into a Crate combo amp or something similar, not a lot of watts but 65 at least. $350 Fender Strat. $350 combination amp*.

A "combo" amp is merely an amp with an on board settings unit.

For my bass amp I have a Hartke 4x10XL and a 5000 head. The head acts as the settings unit and processes the sound I want. With a combo amp, you get that stuff actually in the amp.

I have played guitar for around two years. I have an Ibanez Performance acoustic electric. My sister and I lead the band that plays at my youth group. It's a lot of fun.

Well, I've been playing for almost a year. I started off with this crappy used Epiphone that wasn't set up properly. I couldn't remember the model for the life of me. About three months later I got pissed off at it so much that I went out and bought a Yamaha RGX420S right after Christmas with all the money I had. I also got a Univox 10-G amp that broke shortly after me buying it. (Of course, the store I got it from didn't give me a warranty. That and an incident of charging me extra for adding a spring to the tremolo system after putting heavier strings on lead me to believe that this music store sucked ass. Needless to say, I haven't gone there since).

My current rig is that same RGX420S (stupidly not a Drop 6 version), and a Roland Cube-30 amp. Me and a couple friends started a band not too long ago and are planning on recording a few songs soon.

Cx, from what I've heard, it's not so much the guitar as the amp that makes it sound good. Also, it's a lot easier to make a soft guitar sound hard than trying to make a hard guitar sound soft. That being said, try to get a cheaper guitar (not too cheap though), and a nice amp. My Roland cost me about $330 CAD, and is about as loud as my friends Fender amp (which is about double my wattage), and has nice effects.

Phew...I'm done.

If you want the best deal on a cheap guitar, the option I would suggest is making one. You could spend the 300 bucks on some good pick-ups and anther 100 on strings, tuners, wood, etc. The wireing is quite basic and should not be much of a hasle, unless your a fucking retard. Any other info im leaving out you could find in a how too book (just add 20 bucks).

As for my stringed beast Im carring a clasic Vox four string. It is so old it doesn't even have a modle type. It was built for that clasic british rock sound. Alass it is useless because im a drummer and have other shit to do than learn base.

Dan, the "messing around" with friends, that have every instrument of a band is pretty much saying "we don't know it yet, but we're going to be a band any day now." Go to your local music store, buy a software, write some music, lyrics, and get to it. You probably will hate the first few things you write, but eventually you'll come up with something sha-weet that you'll want to perform in front of an audience (or a battle of the bands), and thus, you have created yourself a band.
Rock on.

not to be an asshole, but your wrong. It is the pick-ups in a guitar that gives the quality sound. an expensive amp will just amplify your sound louder and just a little more clear. that is if you buy a bran new amp. I know this because my dad is formerly a studio guitar player, and im a future music major.

Well personally I'm a bass player, but my friend has this sexy Fender Performer from '85. It's got just enough metal influence and plays better, in my opinion, than a Fender American Strat (which he has too).

I've got a Fender Squier Affinity Strat that came in a bundle with a 15g amp, gig bag, book, cables, picks, electric tuner, extra strings, etc. It was $180 at guitar center and has been a great set up for me. The only difference between it is slightly lesser quality pick ups and it's made in Indonesia. Most people can't tell the difference between a Strat and a Squier Strat, I barely notice a difference. I'd reccomend the Strat Pack to begginers who want to make sure they like guitar but plan on buying a better one if you like it. I love my guitar to death and it still works great for my situation. I'm going to get lessons pretty soon but I'm progressing pretty well on my own and I play everyday just because I love playing so much.

Cx,
If you wanna learn guitar, DO NOT BUY A BEGINNER PACK. Those beginner/starter guitar and amp combos are not the way to go. they are a hure waste of money. you spend like $199 on the set and when you either loose interst or wanna get a more decent guitar, the rig will be worthless. the day after you buy one of those rigs, they are already only worth like 30 bucks.

The wisest advise I've ever gotten was "buy the most expensive that you can afford."
but any hoo, you're in luck now a days. Guitars are gettin cheap as hell.
since you dont know much about guitars, I'm guessing that you arent going to do any giging any time soon. so you will only need an amp that powers though about 10 to 15 watts.
you will need a guitar in the $300 price range. those are decent beginner guitars.
I would stay away from 'Ibanez' guitars though, as they depreciate faster then other guitars tend to.

Fender, and Gibson guitars almost have no depreciation, so If you can afford a Gibson or an American made Fender, go for those. if you pay $800 for it, you will generally always be able to get $800 for it, should you decide to get rid of it.

I would also buy used gear. 'Playability' is far more important than being in 'Mint' condition. Usually minior scratches, dings and pick rash do not affect the value of an instrument.
I would also buy used gear because of the depreciation value of guitars. In most cases the second that you own a new guitar, It becomes 'Used'. So in many cases there are guitars on ebay that are 'bedroom guitars', you can peck off one of these for all of the discount and none of the wear and tear on the instrument.

ohh, by the way, to get back on topic:
'87 American made Squier II strat. (thats right, AMERICAN made)
'00 Ibanez s470 (my bedroom guitar, bought it new 600, now its worth shit)
PRS Tremonti SE ( SE, made in Korea, abolutely great guitar, Koreans are gettin good)
Squier Bullet (my first guitar, now its basicly a wall ornament)

I'm a bass player too. I'm self-taught for the most part, but my friend taught me the very basics, years ago when I wasn't even interested. I'm thinking of getting a Yamaha bass for my birthday or something, I haven't decided on a brand yet. Anyone have any suggestions? I want something under 300$, and I don't care if it doesn't have the radest paintjob or anything... I just want it to sound good! Right now, I play a not-well-known brand bass guitar... couldn't remember for the life of me.

Oh, and yes, I like to solo, it's so much fun!

Yea I'll have a bass solo up online this summer for you to download. I've been working on it forever and I can't wait to record it.

About purchasing a cheap bass. I don't know what to tell you. I bought a really cheap bass (Squier P-Bass) back when I first got into bass two and a half years ago, but within six months I had a $1,250 Deluxe American Fender Jazz Bass with translucent cherry apple red paintjob (so you can see the woodgrain), a discontinued off white creme pickgaurd, and passive pickups.

You might just be better playing on what you have, and waiting until you have enough money for something really nice.

They have combo packs at samash for like $150, I think thats a reasonable price for someone whos just starting. But if your willing to spend $800 Im sure you could find a nice guitar in the $200-300 range and still afford a decent 60-100watt amp. If you just wanna learn Id also suggest getting an acoustic guitar. Samash has them for as low as $99.

Well, I play a Ibanez GSR-200. So does Ninjz. I like it a lot, then again, I haven't played on much else. It is 200-210 USD. The cheapest I found it for was 205, however someone said they got it for 200.
