I guess this thread wasn't clear enough. No one on the admin team wants to specify hard and fast rules regarding what is appropriate for signatures, because someone would make an obviously obnoxious sig that doesn't technically violate the rules, and then people would have another excuse to get outraged when we ban them for it anyway. But I guess that's not enough for some people, so here are some vague guidelines for anyone who isn't capable of figuring this out on their own.

The guidelines below are not intended to be complete or binding upon the administrators. The word of the administrators is final, regardless of whether you feel you've followed the guidelines. If your posts/profile/signature contains links, formatting, images etc. that are found to be offensive, distracting, off topic, or otherwise annoying by the administrators, you will be warned and the content will be edited. If you are repeatedly offensive, your account WILL be suspended.

Don't use the font tag. If you need a monospaced font, use the code tag. Access to the font tag has been restricted to members who do not have a purple usergroup, and will be limited only to admins in the near future.

You may only use the color tag for emphasis (sparingly) or when color-coding your post helps to organize information and present it more clearly. The color tag is not for artistic expression. Making entire posts in a particular color as an individual style will not be tolerated. Using multiple colors in the same word will not be tolerated. Colors in signatures will be tolerated at the discretion of the admins.

The rules for the size tag are roughly the same as the rules for the color tag. Use the size tag sparingly for emphasis, or for headings/titles when your post is long and has multiple sections. The size tag has been deactivated in signatures, because your signature is never more important than the text of other people's posts.

Links in signatures must be somehow related to nerf. Links to sales threads are not permitted. Self-promotion will be tolerated at the discretion of the admins. If you post any links in posts, or in your profile/signature that are blatantly for self promotion, and if your main intent as a member of NerfHaven is to promote yourself, your company, your product or service, your account will be suspended.

Referral marketing links, paid ads, and anything else that earns you some kind of reward when clicked (monetary or otherwise) will not be tolerated. This includes but is not limited to Amazon Associate links, links to off topic sites/pages that are composed mainly of advertisements, and also covers links to browser based games that give you in-game rewards for referring new members.

So, would a link to one's youtube channel be acceptable in a sig, as long as their channel has nerf-related content?

Under normal circumstances, for the average user, keeping all the other guidelines above in mind, yes, that would be acceptable. There's even a field for your youtube account in your profile, if that's your thing. It is difficult to imagine a nerf-oriented youtube channel that would be unacceptable to post in your signature but, like the dinosaurs in Jurrasic Park, I'm sure someone completely lacking common sense or scruples will find a way.

Please don't take this as me telling you how to do your job, but I have a suggestion. There are a lot of random posts and topics scattered about by you, and other admins throughout NH history in multiple different subforums (Like cx's post you linked to). And a lot of the rules posted in said posts aren't in the code of conduct or linked to in the new member guide.

For somebody who has been lurking a while, it is pretty easy to figure it out, but now with the much better, faster member system, you don't need to lurk for ages before getting validated, and thus you might not see the old posts with the more detailed rules.

Granted, it might be a good idiot filter, but to newcomers it might be a little confusing.

Food for thought.

Thanks for reading Langley.
