This site has been around for nearly a decade. I don't want to speak specifically for the admins, but I'm pretty sure they have tried all sorts of things that didn't work as well as the current system. For examply, the previous one took ages to get validated (months for some people). I was an FNG and now I am a regular member. You aren't gonna be an FNG forever, so just get over yourself and suck it up. Nothing says you have to post 8 times a day to be a real member.

I am really trying not to generalize here, because I know there are some intelligent FNGs out there, but to be honest I have only read maybe 2 or 3 threads started by them that I even bothered to read all the way through. Grammar and content have been lacking in the vast majority of them. I think the post limiting system and new ranks are the most brilliant thing that has ever happened to new members of this site. Instead of being totally mute and a nonmember for multiple months (as it used to be), you have the opportunity to POST! I don't think this is limiting anyone's creative liberties. It gives opportunities, if anything.

In short, I feel posting on this site is a privilege that has to be earned. You can post once per day, and contribute as much or as little as you would like. Consider your single post per day as sacred and work on quality instead of quantity. And finally, in my humble opinion, anyone that posts 5 times per day is posting too much no matter if they are a veteran or FNG.

Ya the admins are actually being generous with the fng system. It used to be that you had to wait like a year and a half after signing up before you could actually post. It changed (correct me if im wrong) the beginning of this year.

Posts like the OP are why we have an FNG group, and why you're still in it.

I wish they had a rank system when I first signed up. I think I waited 9 months or so.
I think the idea is that if you really want to be here you will wait if you are just here to cause trouble(you meaning anyone who signs up no in-particular)you won't have the patience to stick around till you can cause problems. Again "you meaning anyone signing up"

I don't normally weigh in on topics like this, but I'm grumpy tonight, so what the hell.

Hang around here long enough, and you'll find that roaches are often killed with flamethrowers.

The long waiting period does a good job of keeping down the crap. If people don't like it, they're more than welcome to go elsewhere. The mods are interested in making a quality atmosphere, and don't give a crap about how many people are logged in.

What passes for communication on the rest of the internet does not apply here. There's a reason that "haven" is in the name.

Now get off my lawn.

From my extensive lurking prior to joining (and I like this new system better than the older one) here are some pointers:

* NerfHaven, as far as I understand it, is a haven away from the masses. The point of NH is high quality mods and builds, not every second person who has a problem with reassembling their blaster. Numbers of members (active or not) or numbers of threads don't matter to the admins here.
* That high guest:member ratio can also be explained by NH being a repository for a lot of good mods. People come here for information, get it then leave. A guest:member ratio means nothing to the admins. The only ratio they're interested in is the signal:noise one.
* To use an analogy, think about special forces units in the armed services. Numbers don't matter to them, quality does. If no one passes the selection course, they'd rather that happen than lower the standards. So it is here.

On the spelling and grammar, this is one that gets to me. Spelling, grammar and so on is about being able to write clearly and concisely without making the reader's brain work too much on deciphering what you're saying so that the comprehension of information is done with as few errors as possible. Or in short: make posts easier to read. Good spelling/grammar is also a skill useful in all parts of your life.

Let's be deliberately obtuse for a minute:

And Nerf Guns are for ages 6+ and less

This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. The "+" indicates above, when taken with the "6" before it, meaning ages 6 or above. Yet your use of the word "less" indicates that Nerf blasters are for people 6 and above and less. If there's no age limit, then why make a point of it?

As someone who's spoken English for his whole life, I know you just made a typo and haven't put in any punctuation to separate one clause from another. On the other hand, think about someone who doesn't speak English as a first language or just has trouble reading, they might have enough trouble figuring out what all the Nerf terminology is without you making their life harder by being lazy with your spelling and grammar. You might say it's a bit unfair to think about people who have trouble reading English and not cutting some slack for people who can't type, but with the typist being inconvenienced vs all the readers having trouble, guess who I'm siding with.

Consider if someone put up a mod where half the steps were missing, and it was up to the reader to figure out what they had to do themselves. That's what bad spelling/grammar is like, unnecessarily making people fill in the blanks simply because you're lazy. Especially with the spelling/grammar checkers in your choice of word processor (OpenOffice is free) and sometimes even in your browser.

Let me put it to you in another way. If you join the army, do you become a general right away? No, you go through boot camp or military school. THAT'S WHAT THE WAITING GROUP IS! You're in, but you still need to learn how to act, and how to respond to your commanding officers. Then you become a private, THAT'S THE THE FNG RANK! which comes with hard work, the very real threat of death, and a shitty paygrade. Then, If you survive that, you might be able to become an officer.

NerfHaven is most likely THE MOST SERIOUS nerrfing forum ever. Why? Because the people here work hard, and they want to create an environment that contributes to a higher grade of nerfy thought than any other site, which means that the people here have to be top-notch. I'm not going to lie, NerfHaven is less accepting of stuff they don't like than other sites. If you want a place that's Fun and Happy, go join Foam Universe, or it's little brother, Home of Foam, or NerfHQ. They also have lower intensity work done there, because they don't have our atmosphere.

NerfHaven is elitest and proud of it, so stop attacking everything that you see as wrong with this site.

If I were you Juggernaut I wouldn't just come in here saying that I could come up with a much better method of validation. This site has been around probably almost as long as you have. Things are the way they are for a reason. Like that button at the top of every page that says Code of Conduct. That's there for reference. It explains the rules that people need to follow if they want to stick around. Of course that's just an example that I'm giving, and is certainly not the only example here. Essentially, if you don't like the rules, there are plenty of other Nerf sites to go to.

I've debated posting in this thread because it most likely will lead to a suspension for me and others but here goes.

The FNG system is much needed. I was the second FNG on this site. I joined, and waited my ass off to finally became a member. I didn't have the need at that point to post 20 times a day so 2 was enough. We had quite a few "stupids" in our group of FNGs that got banned and that was the end of it.

If it wasn't for these measures I'm sure Vaac, Talio, and Langley would be running around on this site locking down so many stupid threads because new guys could just post forever. You should be gratefull for what you have now. Before you had to wait almost a year to get valdiated if you even could.

This site is for mature people as well. If you can't handle waiting period then you obviously aren't commited to the site and don't belong. Granted yes it is a pain to wait but its neccesary.

Now I've said my thoughts and I'm going to leave it alone now.

What do you expect when you a forum on the inernet majority of the people you internet talk everywhere and no every one that use the internet have perfect grammar. I'm not saying I do but you have to be realistic with your expectations from people.

Who said we wanted the majority of the internet community on NerfHaven? I would much rather prefer coherent speech and ideas. I personally think NerfHaven is great the way it is. I was a lurker on here for quite a while, and I still found NerfHaven incredibly useful as a a Nerf modification encyclopedia. Waiting around to post isn't that big of a deal. We don't need people rattling off every single Nerf-related idea that pops up in their head just because this is NerfHaven. Part of what contributes to this site is the fact that most members only post when they have something legitimate to add. It gives the Haven substance.

I am but I never expected to get attacked like this. All the things I suggested weren't for any personal benefit. It is exactly what it is a suggestion. and by what I mean most of the people on the net don't use proper grammar I mean people use grammar that they wouldn't use on a English Paper. Well I can obviously see no one likes this suggestion so I'm done trying to defend it you guys win.

This isn't to try and continue an argument, but I honestly don't think you understand the point of NerfHaven yet, so I'll try one last time: We don't want to be like the rest of the forums on the internet. We prefer quality over quantity. If we wanted to be like NerfHQ, NRev and all the others then I'd agree with your suggestions, but the admins and the majority of the members don't want to be like every other forum out there.

And if you think this is being attacked... ooh boy you haven't been around on the internet much...

...like killing a roach with a flamethrower.

I like to think it's more like pouring a line of borax around an apartment. It might look a little unseemly to visitors, but it slows down the roaches who sneak in from the neighbors'.

I understand that, out of a thousand new registrations, for that one person who will stick around for more than a few weeks and eventually host an awesome nerf war, or contribute a worthwhile homemade design, or even just the guy who turns out to not be such a self-important obnoxious pain in the ass, yes - the registration process must be pretty tiresome. Oops. Sorry about that. We're working on it.

For the other nine hundred and ninety-nine who don't fall into that category, if you don't like it, you are free to leave. This site is visible and searchable to the general public without advertisement at no charge. No one is telling you you can't nerf, or mod, or participate in our community, but you are not entitled to post on this site. If you want to post here, on this one tiny little corner of the internet, you have to wait a little while, and then you have to not be such a giant douche. That's the breaks.
