BEFORE YOU LEAVE - Clean up all your shit and help pick up darts.
I don't want to lose the priviledge of nerfing at this location by leaving the place a mess. I'm going to bring garbage bags to set up near the staging area. Please be courteous.
If you're foreign to making slugs, Kane provided this short, but helpful guide.
Q: How do you make slugs?
A: There are a few relevant writeups I can (and eventually will) link to here, and the make varies. Here are some important basic guidelines:
1. If you use washers, use #6 washers (about 3/8" OD) or smaller. #8 and larger washers tend to expose their edges, even on well made darts. Even though this isn't supposed to be the striking surface, strange things can happen in the land of nerf, and you shouldn't assume that your darts will be flying straight when they hit.
2. If you use ball weights, use 7/32" or smaller. A #6 washer weighs about 0.6 grams, and that's a good target weight. BBs are fairly light, but if you have lower powered blasters they may actually work better. Larger weights than this promote the use of blasters that are far too dangerous to be safe, and probably compromise the durability of the dart as well.
3. Make sure your weight is completely covered. If you're using washers, that means make sure that you can't see the edges of the washer. If you're using steel balls, then make sure that you have substantial hot glue between the weight and the felt. This helps distribute the impact of the ball to a wider area, as felt is not the stiffest padding material.
4. Glue doesn't work on polyethylene. The foam is made of polyethylene. However, hot-glue is a molten mixture of polyethylene and related chemicals, so it will essentially weld itself to the foam, and it works very well. If you drill a pilot hole, then silicone glue seems to work very well with steel balls, and adds a fun bounciness to the dart as well as extra padding. Unfortunately, it takes forever to set, which makes it messy as hell.
