Having Some Problems With My Spectre

I decided to take another look at modding my Spectre (all I had previously done was remove the AR's) and I came up with what I still think, in theory, should be good ideas. Unfortunately, I'm having problems that Google would lead me to believe no one has ever had.

First things first: Here's a picture of what I'm working with.

As you can see, I've added a bit of pipe to each barrel to trap more air behind the dart instead of letting it escape. The darts aren't jamming because the pipe is too tight, I'm sure of it (I dremeled the inside out pretty well and I'm using streamlines.) The barrel sometimes slightly over-rotates now though... this would be easier to explain with another picture.

This causes the darts to not fire correctly because they hit the orange piece. When this doesn't happen, the mod works great, but can anyone help me fix this? I'm sort of at a loss.

Edit: I don't know how I forgot to mention this. Also, sometimes the cocking mechanism won't go all the way back, and if I force it to, it will cock (with a loud pop) and not turn the barrel. VERY annoying. This happens maybe 10% of the time.

You need to open it back up and realign the turret rotation mechanism.

Nope, that doesn't seem to be it... I took it apart again, played with the mechanism (which I had never done anything with) and it seemed to be working fine when the gun wasn't actually firing.

Since you did nothing to the rotation mech, that might be the problem. I think you might have to glue the gear teeth together so that you can no longer rotate it (the barrels) by hand. Since that part is DESIGNED to skip on its own it might be skipping part-way due to the extra weight of the cpvc barrels causing it to over-rotate. It also looks like there is very little clearance between the CPVC and the rest of the shell so that might be causing a bit too much friction on the odd barrel that might be a tiny bit longer than the others. If the friction it generates is too much then the internal gears will skip making a "loud popping noise" and causing the barrels not to rotate. Try sanding down the front ends of the barrels slightly as well as glueing the internal gearing together, this SHOULD solve both problems.

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but the Spectre turret, like the Mav's, is getting support from a bar in the front (and one in the back), which allow it to come out for reload, so the CPVC being too heavy should not be a problem.

I've sanded the CPVC down to the length of the gray plastic around it... there's a very small amount of clearance, but it shouldn't be touching. I'll check it again anyway though.

What do you mean exactly by "glue the gear teeth together"? Is there another thread that addresses this? I'm reluctant to jump into using glue on a moving part for fear of making it never work again.

@ChaosPropel: I agree about it not being too heavy, partly because of the bar supporting the barrel and partly because the CPVC weighs next to nothing, it's only a combined 3 3/4" worth of pipe, and it's sanded out on the inside.

Gluing the slip gears would make it so the turret would only be able to turn when you pull the trigger.

While what our friend Utah here is saying is correct in prionciple, I felt i should clarify that the cylinder (turret to you nerf folks) on the Spectre rotates at the tail end of the priming stroke, not trigger pull.

Yes it does, never suggested it didnt. However if he messed with the priming stroke in any way directly or not, it may have messed with the final positioning of the cylinder

Alright, I've taken the mechanism apart to have a better look at it. Are you talking about gluing these two pieces together?

I have a spectre and it certainly does not have a slip mech as loose as the maverick. You can easily turn the barrels of the maverick manually, but on my spectre I feel like I'm going to snap something when I try to turn the turret manually, it just took a little getting used to to push down the button while turning the turret (Unlike the mav the turret auto aligns.) Push down the turret release button, then spin the turret in place. It should go for awhile, if it stops in less than 3-5 seconds (I'm guessing here, never actually timed a spin) then something is wrong with the length of the turret causing it to hit the walls of the shell. The popping thing you are hearing when you cock it back is most likely the slip mech going off, it probably sounds so violent because I'm pretty sure that the slip mech is much improved over the maverick slip mech. Once again, symptoms of something stopping the turret from rotating...

Actually, putting the gun back together again, it seems to be working now. I have NO idea what changed, but now it works better. Oh well. It shoots probably ~10 feet farther now though, if anyone else in interested in trying this mod. I used 5/8" OD, 1/2" ID PVC and cut it to five 3/4" lengths. Sanded those out on the inside with a dremel so the streamline darts would easily slip in and out, then superglued them in place.

10 feet further than an AR removal or ten feet further than stock? Either way, that's some pretty good range increase for an inverse plunger gun, good job and smart thinking. Also, you probably meant CPVC instead of PVC

One more thing you might want to consider is putting a berserker spring in there... That will increase your ranges by a ton.
