During both World Wars, Battery Kinzie Battery Benson defended Puget Sound from enemy warships. Built to withstand direct hits from battleships, it is constructed in a similar style as German bunkers on D-Day. 3 stories of concrete rooms and hallways form a perfect place for indoor/outdoor Nerf warfare!

Previous Wars listed on NerfHaven: Oct 2009, Dec 2009. Feb 2010

Date: Sunday, October 10th, 2010, rain or shine!

Time: 11 10 am until dusk.

Location: Batteries Kinzie Benson, Ash, Quarles, & Randol in Fort Worden State Park, Port Townsend, WA

Directions. We will be playing in the batteries on Artillery Hill in the center of Fort Worden. Upon entering the park, drive straight until you reach the buildings at the base of the hill. Park around the old power building in front of you which is now a woodworking shop. From there, you can either follow the road on the left as it goes up the hill. You can also take any of the trails going up the hill until you reach Battery Way and follow it to the right. As the road reaches the top of the hill, the line of batteries will be on the right. We will probably be setting up around Battery Benson at the north end.

Park Map
Google maps location: 48.141335, -122.768108

Cost: The State Park is free. Carpooling is encouraged and seats are available for those in King County.

Sandwiches, soda, and water will be provided. Please let me know if you are planning on coming so I can bring enough for everyone.

I will have a large quantity of darts for general use.

While not a rule, bringing a flashlight is strongly encouraged. There are some darker areas of the batteries and it will aid in dart clean-up.

Rules:
  • All players under 18 need parental consent.
  • Eye Protection required. We have limited extras.
  • Official Nerf Ammo only. Other brands are generally acceptable. No camouflage ammo!
  • Nerf Melee weapons allowed for zombie rounds.
  • All modded blasters are subject to approval.
  • This is a state park. We keep it clean, respect other guests, and behave ourselves.
  • Any threats of actual violence, unsafe play, or other nonsense will not be tolerated.

I'm in, and already need another car to hold everyone coming with me.

EDIT: Myself and 13 others will be there in our official University of Puget Sound 14-seater van.

SO EXCITED.

Awwww yeah. I went to the war last year in November, and it was awesome. I'm going to do everything I can to make this, hopefully +1. Put me down as a maybe.
EDIT: Alright, thought I did this earlier, but I didn't read. Official Nerf Ammo only, got it. I remember some people used streamlines with hot glue filled heads, is that alright? Just to fix the fishtailing they do.

Grab an Alpha Trooper, that gun rocks so hard.

Also I'm not going, but I just wanted to say that there needs to be more Nerf Wars in environments like this.
Do you have any gameplay videos?

I will be there. I may or may not have another rendition of "the Walsh". I hope I have something. I will probably have blasters for sale too.

I'm a maybe. I'm pretty sure I have a Cross Country Invitational the day before, so I'm gonna have to wait and see what my workload is going to look like that weekend.

Gunther and I are heading there today to get authorization for the group. We'll let you know for sure the approved gun battery shortly. Just to clarify, the "official ammo" rule is there for two reasons. One is that bright orange foam (or bright yellow for Buzz Bee guns) is easier to find than black stephans. We want to use this site for a long time, and that means being good guests and collecting up every single dart that it's humanly possible to find. That's also why the "no camo dart rule" is in place.

The second reason is that ranges are close in the battery, and being shot with a fully modded stephan shooting 120+ foot flat range gun in the face from three feet away (common ranges in those tight quarters) is not our idea of a good time. Weighted front tips to avoid skidding are fine, and most of Gunther's darts have glue tips for that reason.

In this location, even buying a stock Alpha Trooper and heading straight to the fight ensures a fun time, as you will not be horribly outclassed by any gun there. It's about fun and games, not who has the ultimate blaster.

hmmmm, i just might be able to go to this war... unless my parents have other plans, but yeah i'm going to leave early since it's on a sunday, not sure when though. oh are these stock gun only? hmmm that might be a problem and it may not. as i've modded most of my nerf items in some form or another. but they don't have that much more of a difference in performance, though my nightfinder is the only one that's holding up now these days. rubber band added spring and removed air resrictors is all i did, not much more power though.

IMPORTANT UPDATE!

We will be playing at a different battery than previous wars. Please see the main post for directions.

I met with the park rangers last week and we decided that using the batteries on Artillery hill would be better. Battery Way on the hill is one long line of connected batteries ending in Battery Benson (which is almost identical to Kinzie). This new location will allow our larger group more space to play and new games to try. These batteries also see many less tourists than Kinzie. This should prevent any unhappy halts of play for photographers, etc.

We are now starting at 10am instead of 11.

Details on Batteries Benson, Ash, Quarles, and Randol.

Like Battery Kinzie, Battery Benson held two disappearing guns and is almost identical in layout. Remember the difficulty firing into the wind on the top floor of Kinzie? Benson is surrounded by trees and is off the coast, so no more watching your shots fly back at you. We'll probably start and end the day at Benson with warm up games and humans vs zombies.

Batteries Ash, Quarles, and Randol are connected batteries over a distance of several hundred yards. Each is composed of several floors and multiple rooms. They also have small observation posts and store rooms across the path. These batteries will be used for several new objective games.

Interesting. Gunther, do you know if, or even better when, you will be hosting more of these wars? I understand it's a lot of work to put these together, but I'm not sure if I can make it the 10th. My ride forgot about it so it's up in the air as far as planning.

We aim for a total of at least 4 wars before the weather turns warm and the tourists return. Next one will probably be the first or second weekend of December.

I can't make these, but not for lack of wanting. Gunther, thank you for setting these up. They look like they're going to be amazingly fun.

Even though I can't make them, please be sure to post summaries and pics after the mayhem!

Whoa, barely caught this in time! Not sure I'm gonna have a car this weekend, is there anyone swinging by the Issaquah area on their way up that I could bum a ride off of? (In case anyone's curious, I'm the guy in the group picture with the yellow battleaxe all the way up top-left.)

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who helped organize this war. It was a total blast! I've got 8-10 friends who after hearing our stories are now interested. If the dates for the next war are set well enough in advance I have a good chance of bringing all of them.

Also: Flaming Hilt,

Your slides were excellent.
