#180846 Modification and Paintjob Pictures

Posted by Wes7143 on 01 October 2008 - 06:00 PM in Modifications

Hello NerfHaven. Thank you administrators and jackster57 for validating my account! After a while lurking I would like to share my modified longshot, which includes a simple custom breech.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

This breech is not complicated enough to deserve it's own thread, but I would like to share how it works. Basically the copper in the stock barrel prevents the dart from entering, so the dart is pushed forward into the PETG. Simple but effective, taking my range from around 50' to around 65'. I would like to thank OMC for the PETG.

Sights work better than guessing, when the barrel is too low to aim down (I put a 4 shot RSCB on/in it)

Inspired by the movie "Avatar", and all of the cool shit in it, I painted my LS carbine accordingly.

Posted Image

Yep, that's dual SSPBs integrated. The LS has been modified to the standard of indoor nerfing, and can be loosely be defined as a "Longshot Carbine", Even though its not *completely* minimized.

This used to be a cheap Xtream air rocket shooter.

Posted Image

Ammo Holders.

Posted Image

Disassembled, you can see the lines on the inside tube, used for guaging power.

Posted Image

Armed.

Posted Image

It is a pull back and release gun using a monster rubber band that I added. It has PETG barrels and vacum loads darts in the top.

Ranges average an astonishing 73'.

However, it is unacurate due to the way it is fired, so I decided to stuff 3 stefans down the barrel and see how that went.

Ranges average 38'

An effective shotgun, and devestating at close range.

(sorry it was a bit picture heavy)

Here's another WIP photo of the bolt action. The blockyness still seen on a lot of the stock will go away as I slowly use primitive tools to grind it down.

I thought I might add that flex pvc can be bought in lesser quantities for those who cannot afford at 50' roll here.

Is it because your barrel is so loose that you're having a problem with blowing darts out of the barrel? Would a small ring of lesser diameter brass (like a 1/2" stub of 17/32" stuck in a PETG barrel) possibly solve this problem? I know hamps will fire fine with a tight barrel, they just fire much better with a loose barrel (my hamp had a spinger fit for quite a while).

I finished my core functional bit of my bolt action snap. Obviously, the overall blaster is very unfinished, and lacks a stock, grip, and other comfortable bits, but everything that makes the blaster fire darts is complete.

Posted Image

The snap is true bolt action, with a locking bolt coming out of the rear. Here it is in the locked/unprimed position.

Posted Image

Here it is again, with the bolt pulled back.

Posted Image

Notice there is no tension on the spring, even with the blaster cached.

Posted Image

Tension is added by pushing the bolt back in to the locked position. Notice the spring is slightly more compressed with the bolt halfway pushed in.

Posted Image

Here is a 1/4 scale drawing of what I hope the finished product to look like.

Posted Image

Here is a roughly drawn assembly of the internal parts.

Posted Image

Here is an older rough drawing, that may explain some of how the blaster works. Please ignore the estimated measurements, and mess.

Posted Image

And because a picture is worth a thousand words, and a video is several pictures per second, here is a video showing the blaster's function.

Edit: Please feel free to PM me any questions about the blaster.

Finished up on my bolt action. I might add some metal furniture and decoration here and there, but all of the functional features are in place.

Posted Image

Added an actual trigger.

Posted Image

Trigger link is about as simple as it gets.

Posted Image

I may or may not make a video on this one. I don't think there's anything new enough to have to explain via video, but if anyone has any lingering questions on how it works, feel free to PM me, and I'll explain, or post a video explaining.

I've been doing some experimenting around with stefans, and found that craft glue makes a very strong bond if you make darts slug style. The advantage of course it that it doesn't melt the foam and is arguably as strong a bond as hot glue. The disadvantage is that it takes over a day to entirely dry. Ill be doing some "which one is better" type experimenting soon if any one even cares...

I've got a question, and this is the place to ask it:

I've just made a bunch of darts. I used the hairdryer to get them to the precise size I want them. It's been a couple days, and I've noticed that the darts have shrunken back to their original diameter. I have tried re-heating them with a hairdryer, bet they will either get messed up, or they will soon afterwards return to their original diameter. The darts still work great, but they will fall out if the gun is pointed down for too long. So I ask you, is there some sort of a way to permanently keep my darts at the perfect size, or will they continue shrinking?

Call this dangerous but I make metal tipped stefans. Great range except the washers tend to fall off.

No WAY!!!! (sarcasm), almost all of us put metal in the front of our darts, and using metal washers ins't original. Most of us just have the common sense to put hot glue, or felt tips on top of the metal so we don't kill who we hit. #8 metal washers fit perfectly. Now please someone answer my question.

With slingshots being too heavy, but single .177 bb's being too light for most high powered guns, I bought some 7/32 precision ball bearings from McMaster, just to test out. They're a bit on the expensive side as far as nerf ammunition goes, but they're still far cheaper than stock darts, and only a little more expensive than some of the places that sell #8 washers.

Sizes:
.177 = BB
.219 = 7/32
.250 = Steelshot

Or, if you're using white foam, it doesn't melt. It just pops and compresses. The only time I got it to melt was with a nichrom wire. A glowing nichrom wire. Hooked up to a car battery.

The only foam that I know of that melts really badly is Mile High foam, and if you're using that, then you're already stupid, and shouldn't worry about damaging yourself.

That would depend on where you get your hot glue. For example, I get mine in 24-stick packs at a dollar store (the diameter is just 1/4" per stick though.)

24 sticks of hot glue would not last as long as a bottle of craft glue for the same price.

I am interested to see how craft glue works. How have mine been holding up for you?

Craft glue is like thicker elmers glue. It's much cheaper than hot glue at 99 cents per bottle. Your darts have been holding up very well, and in the cold attic where I live, have completely shrunk to fit PETG perfectly. I've been making my stefans with #8 washers and googly eyes. They work great, unless fired out of my At2k at a wooden wall, then they shatter like glass.

Hey guys this is the perfect place to ask this so at Mcmaster I'm going to order petg for my doomsayer and I don't know what size to get, should the ID be 1/2"?

Get it from OMC, not McMaster.
