I'm right on the border of doing this to my maverick, and would like input. Did you for sure see increased ranges and velocity? Can you still use stock darts?

I see the actual mod all over the net, but very few comments on it. One post said you could only shoot stefans (? There must be a way to change this..), and another just threw out some nice looking numbers...

Here's the picture. I just used a rough piece of tubing to slowly grind away a bit of plastic from the walls on the original barrel, and put it all in there. It looks good, and the brass doesn't wobble at all. Fantastic.

Would have been easier to drill it out, but this was late at night, and....

I've dug around, and it seems that the answer is no. I'd like to play around with it without having to destroy the stock barrel. At first I was doubtful that Hasbro would create their own threading for this, but after looking around at Lowe's, it seems they have.

Has anyone found anything? Couldn't find a size for it. I know most people attach odds and ends INTO the stock barrel, but I'd rather not mess with it...

I was testing a number of dart varieties last night, and I investigated the following variables:

dart length (ranging from 1.5" to 3")
dart thickness (Ace hardware FBR vs. frost king)
tip type (normal sinker and hot glue weight combo versus matchsticks)

Primary gun was a Maverick, and a Nite Finder was used a little bit too.

I found THAT

A) dart length is so trivial that we can rule it out as a significant choice. I perfer shorter darts because they fit in the guns better, and use less material.
Thick darts work better than thinner ones (Frost King FBR), with both better range and usually accuracy.
C) the leaded darts got better power and range, but bad accuracy. Matchsticks got reasonable accuracy, and pretty decent range. This is assuming no holes have been cut or melted in the backs of the darts. I'm going to re test with some of these holes today, and I'll post back.

But the difference between FBR and then between tips have been significant. I think the matchsticks don't have enough weight on them. I rubber coated a normal stefan, with hole, and got amazing results.


I may have to dub it the MS/S if further tests find it best...

Update- I found that A) normal matchsticks don't seem to have enough weight, and holes put in the back seem to increase velocity at the cost of accuracy (crazy spiraling normally not seen).

I did a search for a like topic, but did not come up with anything.

Anyway, I've been thinking about my Nerf modifying, and I was wondering about barrel length. I see lots of people using upwards of 4" for their barrels, and I think this is a waste.

Let's think about it. Even if you can get your 1"-3" dart to the bottom of the barrel, it still has to travel a good distance before it can leave the barrel. In the time it is traveling this length, the pressure difference between plunger (I've been thinking about my NF, but I reckon this applies more or less universally) and the barrel changes as volume of air behind the dart is increase. Think about it. More space to fill behind the dart because you have a long barrel, less and less pressure behind dart.

Eventually, with a long enough barrel, you might see a "backfire" or sorts, or a negative pressure that actually pulls the dart back towards the gun.

Some will argue that barrel length increases accuracy, but what good is some accuracy when you can't shoot 30'?

I would recommend 'nesting' a short piece into something wider if you want accuracy.. This way, you won't get air sucking back on the dart. If we had huge plungers, I doubt this would be a problem. Air pressure guns may work otherwise, but I don't know.
