I personally use the MCR5 chest rig and can say it will in fact work fine for nerf mags. I run 6X12 round magazines. Sorry if this is a necro - just wanted to provide most up to date information

At 9.6 volts the solarbotics gm2 motors are amazing but at 6 volts don't even bother

Can we please stop recommending the solarbotics rm-2 motors? They are not good for this application. They are short lived, low torque, low voltage motors. Most people use them with standard ALKALINES!! The batteries alone are not enough to provide stall current on these motors. Additionally, the metal brushes in these mean we burn them up relatively quickly. PLEASE AVOID THESE MOTORS unless you plan to take them apart, use full carbon brushes, and use a 2s LiPo. For the price/amount of work, there are better options.

To answer OP properly, there are several motors that can give you good torque in the hobby. The E-Flite Blade 180 (Mabuchi FK-180sh 3240 generic) are top of the line motors and will do everything you need them to. I know you want to avoid shell cutting, so the next ones are good options.

You can also look to several vendors for the MTB Rhino (FK Falcon clones) that also meet the needs. The Rhinos are the best bet to avoid shell cutting. Also take a look at what are deemed the Mieshel motors (look on reddit.com/r/nerf) for standard 130 sized motors.

Please note that these do require a good discharge battery in order to operate properly. Blades and Mieshels run great on a 2s 25-40 C LiPo. MTB's require a 3s 25-40 C LiPo. NOTE: LiPos are recommended, but NiMh or NiCd are acceptable as long as they have a good discharge rate.

Will this be an annual event? I live in Berthoud but my birthday is the 17th and I have a bunch of stuff planned already so I wont be able to make it.

This will be hopefully a monthly event. I would like to get regular games going. Hopefully not in weather like today.

Here are some recent flywheel projects.

First up is my RapidStrike with underslung Swarmfire; It has a blowgun for HVZ events
Mods include:
Full Rewire
9.6V, 1600mAh NiCad Battery for the RS
7.2V, 2200mAh LiPo Battery for the Swarmie; internally housed above the pusher mech
SlyDev Rail on the bottom of the Swarmie for a foregrip

Second up is my personal take on a Strayven;
Mods include:
Full Rewire
180 Elite Blade Motors
7.2V, 2200mAh LiPo Battery housed internally just between the rear of the Stryfe and Rayven magwell.

Something else I threw together:

Rapidstrike stock attachment using an old Spectre rear piece; Super solid. It is no longer adjustable, but it is adjusted perfectly for me (5'11")

This is superb! From an electrical side, its very very impressive. The only thing I would recommend would be getting a better battery to run the flywheels. Seeing how much work you've sank into this blaster, I feel it could benefit from an internally housed LiPo. I recommend a 2s or similar with a good discharge rate; the windup on a good discharge battery is nonexistent.

But overall, mad props! Just kinda sad the ammo counter site is out of stock now.
