Each year the SMC photo department goes on a camping trip. It's a good time to get drunk, take pictures, cook, camp, and be raucous. Most of the people who go on the trip are extremely good photographers, and I learned a lot simply by asking questions.

I'm just a lowly photo 1 student, on my first trip with the group. About 30-40 students out of the entire program go up each year. I've got about 7 years of photo experience, but only 2 of which are formal photography classes.

Here's the best of my images of the trip.

let me know what you think.

This is the road off off highway 395. We had to drive about 2 miles into the forest, which was a naturally occuring wall of trees. There was virtually no transition between the high plain-ish area and the forest.

This is Silver Lake. It’s located around the June Lake Loop off of HWY395. There’s not much going on in this town. Everyone was fishing or sitting on their porch chainsmoking.

Posted Image
stopped while driving along the freeway. There’s tons of turn offs along the freeway for tourists to take pictures. I am one of said tourists.

Posted Image
haha guns. I missed a turn and went to make a uturn in this driveway. I noticed the sign and empty parking lot with the hectic clouds in the background. This image looks a lot better blown up.

my favorite shot of the whole trip.

road to south tufa / mono lake

mono lake. These weird sculptures sticking up are called tufa, and are formed when the salt of the lake (it’s 2.5x saltier than the sea, and 100x more alkaline) reacts with the alkaline content. They form under the water, and after millions of years get really big. The water level has dropped and exposed the sculptures that were once hidden underneath. Very surreal.

my failed attempt at a 15 minute star trail. Next time I'm doing a 2 hour exposure when I get a locking cable release.

Those are AWESOME!

What camera were you using?

And I think you should do a 24 hour scene, take a picture of something every hour or something.

Nice work!

I think you have some mad photography skills! The pictures are fantastic- very professional. I'd have to say my favorite picture is the second one down.

Thanks! Landscapes aren't my thing, but that was the assignment was 10 landscape photos. Hopefully these are A material as long as she doesn't notice some of the real technical errors I made. The SMC photo department is one of the best in the state. Some of the most intense grading i've come across as well. Photo 6 (advanced commercial photography) they have around 200 some assignments and your shots must be magazine quality for an A.

Do you own the D100? I bought my own D40, using a 18-55mm, and I love it. They are a really good DSLR.

I don't get my kicks out of you,
I don't feel the way I used to do.
I know its bad,
After what we had,
But I’m just not the angel you knew.

nope. Shot in RAW then edited white balance and color saturation in lightroom.

no other retouching or dodging/burning done. Only RGB adjustment and white balance.

Very nice..

I am a pretty big photographer myself.

I shoot with a Canon 5D.

My friends and I are actually planning a road trip out to Yosemite next year for a road trip. Looks like a sweet place.

Keep up the great work.
