Well I have a few questions so I'll go 1 by 1.
1. I've heard people talk about using modified sprinkler valves instead of ball valves. Can someone explain how to mod one and what they actually do.
2. I was reading Carbon's Snap 1 Mk 2 write up and I don't understand how the gun catches? And how would I make a catch for any other spring gun?
3. What does a check valve actually do?
4. Are there any recommended places to get a good cheap pump.

valves, catches, etc.

1. I don't know how to mod a solonoid. Search for it, I know it's there.
2. The clothes pin pushes up the nail so that when the catch face goes over it, it gets pushed into a hole, the side of a hole catches it. Open the clothes pin and it pulls the nail down and out of the hole.
3. Check valves let air go one way, but not the other.
4. Try ShopKo or Target, maybe a dollar store.

Here's the process on how it catches:2. I was reading Carbon's Snap 1 Mk 2 write up and I don't understand how the gun catches?
1. Nail is sticking into the pressure chamber, held up by the clothespin.
2. The plunger moves back.
3. The rear of the plunger (the endcap) pushes the nail down, because the plunger rear is rounded.
4. The rear of the plunger moves past the nail.
5. The center of the plunger is narrower (.75" PVC), so the nail pops back up from the clothespin.
6. The plunger is released. The front of the plunger rear holds against the nail, keeping it in place.
7. Upon firing, the nail is pulled down, releasing the plunger.
I don't use a hole for the catchpin on my plunger: it can catch at any place on the rear of the plunger.
Any spring gun usesa variation on that theme: A plunger is able to push a catch out of the way on its rearward travel, but is held in place by it on its forward travel. And how would I make a catch for any other spring gun?

How to Mod Sprinkler Valves
Check Wikipedia for how sprinkler valves work and imagine a blow gun trigger venting air in the diaphragm. This creates an inbalance in pressure and allows the diaphragm to lift up and allow air to flow to the other side.
