I was wondering how many people have used the search function lately?
EDIT: Sorry if the last part sounded like I'm being an ass--it's just a joke in reference to a ton of repeat threads that have been popping up in every section of this forum.

My feelings on myspace, facebook, and so forth are alot like my feelings regarding giant black dildos. I know they're out there and people derive a good deal of pleasure from them, but these people and their genital warts are the very reasons why I have no fucking interest in them.
1. Go to the search button in the right corner of the screen
2. Click
3. Search double longshot clip.

I hated the word.
I hated the users.
Then I got one, and I've never looked back.
See if you actually have friends, and you actually catch up with your friends, it's great.

I'm not defending it, because it's still a terrible website, but let me defend it here for a secondSo you don't mind the constant spam, the constant glitches, and the amount of clutter on every page? Facebook is 100% better in all of those areas, The only possible reason I could see for having MySpace is if that's where all your friends are.
If you're sick of the spam then put your account on private. People can only add you if they know your last name or email address. And the only reason you're getting spammed in the first place is because you've added a band or comedian or some "popular" group that a bot is auto-adding all their friends.
If you're talking ads then adblock(ff) or opera(right click > block content) are pretty hard concepts.
As for facebook, yeah I have one, and there are a lot more family and stuff that just wont go on myspace, but what it boils down to is that there is nothing to do on facebook. The Graffiti plugin is the only thing it has going for it. The layout is bland, the applications equally as boring, and everyone can see what you write on everyone elses walls and when. As for myspace clutter? Know less teeny boppers.

Being a web developer, I am sure you're familiar with certain design concepts(i.e. whitespace) that are more important than being 'flashy' or 'not bland.' Facebook exemplifies these concepts far better than Myspace and, in my opinion, makes it more pleasurable to be on there than MySpace. The clutter is the number 1 reason I dislike MySpace.
Not sure what you mean by: "everyone can see what you write on everyone elses walls and when." If you mean that it shows up on the News Feed, so what? That only happens when the poster and postee are both your friends, and then, in that instance, who cares if you can read what you friends are saying to one another? Facebook's privay settings are much better, and no wall is public unless you're a) someone's friend b) in someone's network and/or c) someone has messaged you, and even in any of these scenarios, it's not required that those people can view it(save for a).
As for: "As for myspace clutter? Know less teeny boppers." I'll need clarification, but I don't think anyone can actually argue that MySpace ISN'T cluttered...
Bottom line here is, I'm familiar with Facebook and you're familiar with MySpace. We're each looking for certain things out of our networking sites and that's why both can co-exist.

I'll leave that one till you're a bit older....and then, in that instance, who cares if you can read what you friends are saying to one another?
As for myspace clutter, the most prolific profiles are the ones by people under 16. The ones who don't understand design principles or the load the css opacity places on Opera. Sure I could list mistakes they make but we all know these. All I'm saying is that I just don't visist these pages. Everyone I talk to frequently on myspace has simplified. They run a flash overlay. They run a minimalist layout. All I meant was, have less teeny bopper friends.
Facebook in Australia exists for the bored office clerks and family users who don't have the time or ... cliche ... to manage a myspace. You don't get the quality of comment and "dicking around" as you do on myspace. It's just so serious.

Really? You're two years older than me, don't play the age card ever again please. Age is a relative number, is it not? It might be one thing if you knew me well and didn't want to say something because you knew I wouldn't understand because I am not old enough to have experienced it, but the bottom line is, you don't know me, so you shouldn't be making judgments on what to say to me based on a number that is relative to what I've done/experience in life. Sure, maybe the content wasn't family friendly enough for you to feel comfortable enough to have every member read it, but in that case, say that, don't tell me no because of age.
What I meant by my statement is that if you're friends with someone, you can see their wall, just as you can on MySpace. You can't leave 'private' wall posts on MySpace. Anything that is that private should be in a PM, not a wall post as it's public for all your friends to see. Again, if you're referring to the News Feed, that can be turned off.
My comment about clutter isn't really even in reference to malformed CSS on profile pages. I'm referring to the base pages on MySpace that they've designed - Home, Music, etc. These are far too cluttered, and I don't even know where to look for things when I want to find them. They've blatently ignored every usability law in my mind.
Usually I'm against conformity, but not when it's for cleanliness/order. It's just so smooth and streamlined. Even before apps were out, I didn't find myself saying, "Damn, this profile looks like all the others." Let's face it, most sites are pretty uniform. This forum is, save for the differences in who is saying what in each post, but I don't hear you complaining about how all the threads look the same, do I?
Let's not forget the extreme bandwidth that MySpace needs. And again, I'm not talking about on 'teeny bopper' profile pages, but any page on the entire site that is made by MySpace.

Will either of you sleep better at night if the other admits defeat?
Do either of you think that you gain respect from the community with these kinds of discussions?
Myspace and Facebook are competing companies who strive to please different groups.
Nerfhaven is about nerf.
This is an off topic section, but really guys, it started as a possible recruitment thread.
Rambo already started a Facebook group for nerfers, and it's doing rather well.
Taita Cakes, why don't you start a myspace group for nerfers, and that too will probably do well.
Everybody wins!

And no RAMBO, I had lunch and got petrol and a tyre fixed, but I couldn't leave that paragraph untouched before I left.
To quickly dispute:
Bandwith is not even an argument. Seriously man.
Clutter, if you're talking about finding the div's about someones information, where to read their favourite movie, where to comment them; then facebook is just as bad at it as well. You still have to wade through all the applications to find someones wall because they have a super wall, an ultra wall and a mega wall (god only knows why). And if you want to remove applications for arguements sake then subtract the layouts from myspace and what you get are two rather identical, minimalistic, modular representations of information.
Individuality is why myspace still dominates. Sure the individuality aspect on really appeals to teenagers, but its still a leading factor. Facebook can't even offer a colour changer, let alone skins. How hard is it to implement a 256 colour selector?
I'm not saying Facebook is a terrible website, it has its many positives.
It's just that Facebook offers little that email can't. Sure, myspace is similar, but it gives you an identity, a persona.
And as I mentioned, it's just so serious. Both my sisters (26 and 28) have added me, along with their friends. My Aunt is on facebook. You have to mind your Ps and Qs, keep it all above the belt, and most importantly, not talk shit.

Clutter: Third time I'm rephrasing myself - visual clutter(i.e. chaos reigning over all the pages on MySpace, not even specific to profile pages, any MySpace home/music/search page) - not cluttered code. Why do I need to look through someone's code? I can just copy & paste anything I see on the page and format it as I'd like. I can't think of a time were I needed to look at a MySpace OR Facebook profile page's code.
Individuality: It might all be presented the same, but at least I know where to look for someone's information. Just because they can change their background color or put some images on their page doesn't tell me shit about who they are, or what they like. I need to see their interests, which is commonly a hard to find section on MySpace, esp. with color contrasts so poor. Someone's identity, to me, is comprised of:
A) Their name
B) Their face
C) Their figure(to a lesser extent)
D) Their interests
E) Their personality(using this as a very broad term to cover things as odd as clothes choices)
Somehow, a background color, image, text color change, etc. doesn't help me learn anything about that person's identity in my definition. If you definition is drastically different, I'd love to hear it, but I really don't see how a change such as one of the ones listed truly identifies someone. They can change that as freely as they'd like, but any of their identity traits(as defined by me) will pretty much remain the same. What's the point of the last sentence? A picture(photo of them) or a few words(their name) tells me more than any background change ever could about the person.
I, as I often do, have rambled a bit, but I feel I'm being fairly basic in my claims. Refute them if you will.
Just reread your post and I missed: "You still have to wade through all the applications to find someones wall because..." when replying. Sure, that may be common, but as you said, those people are your "teeny boppers." Applications have gotten way out of control on Facebook, but the point remains:
It's still the 'teeny boppers' that abuse them. Think of it as a fraction:
Facebook + teeny boppers + professionalism - clutter
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MySpace + teeny boppers + clutter
Cancel 'teeny boppers' and you still have professionalism for Facebook and clutter for MySpace. So, my points still ring true with validity as your college friends are more likely to still be using Facebook to it's original intent with a few, minor, modifications that add your 'Individuality.'
Edit: Must be nice to be able to have lunch right about now - I'm trapped up in my room without food...:(

Clutter: It's clear we're arguing in circles here but I don't think I've ever had to view source on either myspace or facebook before. That's just nuts. And by the way, now it is you that's making assumptions. The "teeny boppers" on facebook that are cluttering their pages have no real forumla. They're 21 year old university students, they're 29 year old bank workers. They're socially inept, and they're attention whores.
Individuality: Yeah, clearly all of things define a person, and we agree they are available on pretty much any half baked social website like Bebo or Hi5 or friendster, but the point is that these are the simplest identifiers of "indentifying people 101".
Now it's my turn to quote worn out design principles like colour, background, shape etc.
Whether subliminally or not, you look at a persons profile and can pretty much instantly decide what sort of person they are. They tell you things a favourites list or picture of their left testicle can't. The tone sets the mood, the background music can really show their personality, their featured video generally has them doing something stupid, and their about me section really says bundles about a person. In my circles (because myspace around the world really does differ) the about me is just a short blurb about yourself and the rest is shoutouts to your friends and what you like about them etc.
Yeah I'm getting distracted. Can't type straight haha.

Alright, so there may be some college students that have too many apps, but my fraction still is accurate - both have 'teeny boppers,' so we must look to other characteristics to make our differientation.
You've contradicted yourself quite a bit there Tait. Applications are bad, yet the things that they do are good because they're identifiers? Apps allow you music of your favorite artist, a video of you doing something stupid, and I'm not really sure what you're talking about with the About Me section. Both sites have that, so it's a null point.
Background music can really be a massive pain in the ass, esp. when you can't fucking turn it off. Facebook has put safeguards in place that music will never autoplay on profiles. Plus, background music can equally disrupt or set the mood whether you can turn it off or not. I don't want to go to a profile, hear country, and have to search to turn it off because it blends in with the background. I'll know someone is a hick when their music section reads:
'Kenny Chesney, Garth Brooks, Dixie Chicks, etc. etc." I don't need a song that I don't want to listen to to tell me that, do I? Are we really becoming a society that is dependent on listening rather than reading?
Again, in your circles, on Facebook, you can have all the shoutouts equally as prominent on your page, esp. with the advent of applications.
Yeah, I hate those invites too, but I don't think anyone can truly argue that Apps are globally good. The bad part is though - there are people who think zombies and pirates are good and useful things that fit the Facebook image are bad.
Time to try to sleep - rebuttal tomorrow night.
