You could do what I did.
Remove the pully system and scrap it. Take the string cut it in half. Then attach one half though each plunger, and tie off into loops. Run the cord out the back. Pull each string (or both at the same time) to cock each tube. Fire away.

The new ones are horrible. The old ones have better springs and the capability of expanding the spring pull. In the new DS, it doesn't use all of the ratcheted plunger.
