I'll admit that im new to the forums here but i searched this one and didnt come up with anything.
I'm really big into paintball and picked up nerfing as a form of cheap entertainment on the side and i was thinking why not try to bring one of my favorite paintball ideas over to nerf?,
I'm not sure how many of you out there play paintball avidly but there are paintball scenarios, the two most notable of which are based off of operation overlord, more commonly known as D-DAY from world war 2, these games are Oklahoma D-Day, held at a field named after the game in Oklahoma, and Invasion Of Normandy held at Skirmish USA in PA.
The question here is how feasable do we all think pulling a large scale game based on this scenario or some other large scenario (with missions worth certian point values and such) would be and if so what would the scenario be and how could it be managed fairly?

My opinion? Nerf isn't paintball. I don't want it to be. If I wanted to play mil-sim scenario games, I'd play paintball or airsoft. Nerf is closer to tag or free range dodgeball than mil-sim.

True. But you know how cool it would be to have a Die Hard game,

And that was the idea, not to turn nerf into paintball or airsoft but to borrow concepts and create a large scalle game. skirmish's I.O.N. game this summer attracted almost 4500 players from all over the world, im not asking for anywhere near that many nerfers, that would just be chaos. But if we could get around 100 people together...

I enjoy mil-sims. I am not allowed to play airsoft or paintball, so sometimes me and my friends will play hostage sims. Usually it's just a back and forth down the hall with an ocational charge.

That's good.

I wrote this article a while back about keeping each of the shooting sports separate. I too, am an anti-mainstream ex-PBer (age and relocation, more than loss of interest is why I'm "semi-retired") who enjoyed my Stock-class Phantom and Tunnel Rat as much as I did a good Nerf war.

The reason why you won't see huge scale Nerf wars anytime soon is because modified Nerf warring is a tiny NICHE market; that is, we are quite underground when you line them up with paintball, airsoft, or even SuperSoakers. Despite the fact that we have three or four NerfHaven members/admins who have carte blanche at Hasbro's Nerf division, and the fact that Hasbro representatives have gone to scheduled Nerf wars (and brought the participants goodies; Nerf blasters!); despite all that, we are still a heavy minority in the hobby shooting world. No sponsors, no media coverage, no hype.

And in some ways, I believe we like it that way.

The biggest wars you will see that are coordinated within the Nerf Internet Community are Apocalypse, affectionately known as Apoc, and Armageddon, nicknamed 'geddon. Do a quick search on the "Nerf Wars" forum and you cannot miss it. Sure, there are assassination games with Nerf blasters on many college campuses, with possibly hundreds of participants, but often those come with financial incentives (prizes) for survival, as well as a lot of fun to play. Nerfers play, they travel long distances (coast to coast), for the sheer love of the game. Ask One Man Clan, Groove, Kuhlschrank, or any of the guys who've flown and driven many 100s, even 1000s of miles to attend other's Nerf wars.

I believe that Nerf is a transitional kind of shooting hobby; kids too young or poor to get a paintball marker or airsoft gun of reasonable quality can enjoy the same kinds of weaponry as seasoned Nerfers by going to the store, hitting up eBay, or shopping from fellow Nerfers on NH (of which many like One Man Clan and Forsaken Angel24 are glad to help interested people get good blasters). As the Nerfer gets older, more confident, and attains more financial resources, they purchase the said PB or AS weapon of choice, and then sell off all their Nerf gear, some even going as far as saying "I've grown out of Nerf". We see it all.

That said, it'll be difficult at best to get even 100 Nerfers on the same playing field for a good skirmish. Because the roundabout average of a Nerfer appears to be about 13-20, many young'uns won't have parental permission to travel long distances to shoot plastic toy guns. Add to that the obvious immaturity of younger kids, communication and coordination challenges, and no reliable way of confirming hits other than the honesty system (which is even a problem in paintball nowadays), and you can see that it would be all uphill trying to get a successful mass-Nerf experience.

You don't say much about where you live, but if you're on either coast, you have access to some pretty good Nerfing. You ought to try attending a war published on NerfHaven first, then consider what having a giant Nerf war would be like.

I understand where your coming from on people getting into paintball and airsoft after nerf althogh just for the sake of an argument i am one of who i suspect to be a very very small population who is that inverse, I got into nerf as a cheap way to practice movement and comunication for paintball and from this idea it blossomed within me to where i am now. i am on the east coast and within an hour or so drive of skirmish's invasion of normandy so i know how bad cheating can get at large games like these and actually im getting practice with coordinating these games at the moment because my woodsball/scenario paintball team is helping to run a scenario at a local field whom we gained a sponsorship from (anyone in the phillidelphia looking for a place to paintball can pm me for the field name). Im just asking that if we could find a location and get 2 or 3 people together to plan and orginize this event (by nature of the job they may not get time to play much), how many people would be interested in an event like this and do they think we could really make it work? And about the honor system piney, i understand far too well how lacking some people are in honesty in paintball and i doubt that it hasnt started to polute the ranks of nerfers out there also so maybe we could find a way to keep it a little more honest.

And in an off topic moment id like to ask piney, do you still have that stock class phantom you mentioned? I've been trying to get my hands on one.

Let's see if we can load marbles into our nerf guns, then it would exactly like skirmish!

Same. I started nerf as practice for paintball. Only thing is, you will come to the conclusion, after playing nerf as a mil-sim for a while, that nerf is not a milsim, and therefore not comparable to paintball, or airsoft. I learned this and since then I have taken-on nerf for what it truly is, running around and shooting strangers with pieces of foam from souped-up childern's toys. And you know what? I love it a million times more than paintball.

Ok heres the deal, I only said I got into nerf to practice paintball stuff, I never said that worked, and I dont remember ever stating that I wanted it to really be milsim. I'm fairly sure I may have said something about milsim and by this I ment that me and my friends borrow mil style tactics and such which we always have, we play things like halo and put tactics to games like this. I understand that milsim nerf probably will never happen and if it does, it can create its own branch off sport but as for now, lets just leave that alone. and the closest nerf has come to to helping me in paintball is that I considered using the titan as an anti tank rocket for a while untill I can get a good one. So, now that we've established that nerf is nothing like any other sport out there, do we still think that we can find some people and do a large scale nerf war with some kind of plot behind it?

I don't think we should go as far as having a plot, but having plot-based objectives and turning rounds of wars into "Missons" might be interesting.

Oh, don't take what I said as an attack on the idea. The idea seems great, but I doubt it'll work, simply because of a lack of enough participants.

Please prove me wrong though.

If we could do this it probably would have to wait untill next summer and as far as missions we could have everything from defending a position for a set amount of time to multiple (yes we can do more than 2 teams depending on a plot line) teams racing to find a hidden objective. I've been pretty busy with paintball lately but once the school year starts that should free up alot and i can try to plan this out and start looking at doing a small scenario as a trial in my area and depending on the sucess of the trial maybe we could try a larger game. Like i said though this probably wont happen untill next summer.

If you want people to get into this war, it's in your best interest to show your face at some other East Coast events first. I know your scenario wars don't have a lot in common with our normal way of doing things, but coming to some established wars goes a long way for your attendance. Namely, people can meet you and realize that you're not a tool.

Unfortunatly I'm stuck with the fact that I'm still in highschool and have failed my driving test 3 times now (wouldnt be a problem if the first guy didnt fail everybody on their first try). So I have a hard time getting around but I plan to start goin to some wars when possible. So then, anybody going to a war in the Philly area please lemme no and ill try to make it and get a better idea for how a war is with a group of passionate nerfers rather than people who just wanna shoot stuff.

I'm sure you're not the first person to come up with this idea, but you're sailing into uncharted territory with this post. I don't think it's never been tried before, so there really isn't a case I can point to and say "it doesn't work". Up in NY, the closest we've gotten is some varients we've played which have been on a larger scale and with certain specific objectives. These have worked very well for us in the past.

However, I'm not sure that there will ever be the manpower present at one of the wars to conduct the Battle of Normandy, let alone Lexington and Concord.

Amen. Apoc, one of the BIGGEST nerf events of the year had about 45 players. With that many people, a scenario war MAY be possible, but a Normandy recreation, no way. Also, keep in mind this was hosted by highly respeced, widely-known members of the community. The chances of a newbie being able to get this many players to a war would be zero to none. But, as I've stated before, the idea seems intruiging and sounds like a ton of fun. I just don't think it's going to happen any time soon.

As much as I love the Normandy scenario, I dont see it happening in nerf anytime in the near future. however not all paintball scenarios are military based, there is a video at webdogradio.us where the host of the website plays in a werewolves vs vampires scenario. Something along these lines seems more feasable to me. As far as hosting it i would be trying to get some help planning and such from more experienced members of the comunity.
