Long time lurker, first time poster. So anyway, a couple of weeks ago I was brainstorming ideas of how to make a semi-auto nerf gun without the use of a plunger (I'm a sucker for cosmetics on guns). So I thought about how real guns work, and remembered that for the most part the power comes from the bullet itself, so I realized that I could make the shell and bullet do the work of the plunger tube and I came up with this little idea.

Basically the idea is that using the power of elasticity you could store kinetic energy in a spring or rubber band or other such elastic material, and have the dart be pushed right against the clip by the spring causing it to be stored under lots of pressure which would then be conferred to forward momentum when the dart is allowed to travel forward by aligning the shell with the barrel. So with that in mind all you would need theoretically is an advancing mechanism which could keep the shells from spilling out, or other things you wouldn't want to happen. Now I realize that this idea most likely will not have really great ranges, unless you find some really good springs to fit in your brass shells and that you need very dense Stefans to withstand being flattened by the spring but semi-auto at medium-close range while using a primary is nothing to laugh at. Suggestions welcome.

You aren't going to get much range, if at all with just springs pushing darts. But if we could get something like an airsoft grenade shells where you charge them before hand and then fire that could work. Lots of engineering though.

Yeah, the range would be next to nothing. Darts don't move from the force of the spring, they move from the air pressure the spring builds up in a plunger.
And for the dart to go any more than 3 feet, your going to need a strong spring, one that would crush the darts in the shell.

Or a small tank with the shell.

Very, very little range considering the size of it. I'd personally abandon the idea but good luck if you choose to pursue it.

I broke my clippers trying to cut the spring. So I couldn't break the spring with my bare hands so I used a hammer to pound the clipper handle and one of the clippers broke off.

This would work if you made each section of the magazine it's own plunger tube. The only problem would be it would be huge, and difficult to make.

Exactly. It's like using a rocket launcher as a primary instead of an assault rifle. Now, if this was attached to another gun, as an integration, and made to fire stefan clusters, that would be cool.

I drew something like this as a test for sketchup, but mine had two clips, one full of plungers and one full of ammo. the plunger on moved in an arc behind the vertical clip, but still, there would be very minimal power on this, I realized that when I looked at the size
