I'm interested in modding my guns for higher ranges, so I've been looking at air restrictor mods. But all the, say, Maverick mods I've seen say to take out the long peg that goes into the hole in the dart to hold it in place to enable the gun to fire stefans. If I don't want to use stafans, should I still take out that rod? If I take out the spring and that other piece that just fall right out, and leave the rod in, will that increase the range? Or do I have to take the pole out?

Thanks!

Taking the pole out would be the best choice. If you don't use Stefans you can still remove the pole and the dart would still fit in...

I guess I wasn't as clear as I thought.

I'm not worried about the darts fitting in if I leave the pole. I'm just wondering if I can still get a noticeable range increase if I leave the pole in.

Yes, but you won't be able to fire stefans.

Take eveything out except for the orane ring that connects the turret and barrels: then you will see a noticeable difference.

Contrary to n00bs common beliefs, the pin does not hold the dart in, rather, the constriction (smaller barrel ID)
in the back of the barrel does. That is why the back end of your darts will be slightly smaller if you leave them in your maverick for a period of time.

So yes, you will see some range increase, but you will be far better off just taking it out.

Take into considerations that he's pretty new (2posts so far) so he probably doesn't want to make any mistakes on his 1st try.

He also said he isn't shooting stefans, (sounds like me when I 1st started modding... 3 weeks ago)

and lastly, he's modding a MAVERICK!! From my own experience, that damn gun was not worth the time i spent on it... (when I 1st started, the only tools I had was an Exacto-Knife, a philips screwdriver, and Krazy Glue; and it took me hours of sawing those damn pegs out before I realized with a lil added pressure, I could slice right through em)

ah back to topic, yes you just need to remove those AR's to get a slight increase in distance, be warned since they are taken out, there's nothing now to stop the LOUD BANG whenever you shoot. If you lose all your stock darts and decide it's not worth it to buy em for 33 cents each when you can make your own for 5-6 cents each, then open it up and remove the pegs. i'd suggest using a sander attachment to your rotary tool or dremel, w/e to melt your pegs off, if you don't have or can't afford 1, Home Depot has a nice area where you can rent their tools for a very cheap price... that or use an exacto-knife.

Have you never glued foam on the front to the puluger head to stop that noise? Even with an ex-acto knife and super glue, you can do that.

You know you can just break most of the peg off by just snapping it like a twig, right?
And if you want to get all of it, just twist it off with a pair of pliers.
Or go the extra mile and snip the small rods holding the peg in with a pair of wire cutters.

melt your pegs off

That's rich.
What's next? Using C4 to blow the pump caps off you air guns?
I would say shooting shotgun shells out of titans, but that's already been done.

If you are going to use stock darts, leave the pegs in. If you remove the pegs, that hole in the back of the dart will have to fill with air before any air can be used to propell the dart, thus reducing your ranges. My friends and I had a stock Maverick, and a Maverick with just the pegs out, and the Maverick with the pegs had better ranges. It wasn't by much, but it still shot further.

Wouldn't that require foam too? O.o
So technically I guess you Can't glue foam to a plunger with an exacto-knife and superglue... w.o any foam to begin with.

That's rich.

WOW, my hostile-meter went through the roof.
Rather then be a sarcastic "chitinous", I'll try to explain what I meant by melting the peg off in a very simplified manner. A few hours ago I was using flamebo388's DTB simple guide. It said to remove the pegs, so I used the sanding attachment for my dremel, and as the sandpaper spun really really fast against the bottom of the plastic peg, it caused FRICTION, which is very VERY hot. When plastic gets very very hot like that, sometimes it can't handle the heat, and it starts to MELT... so that's what I meant when I said I used my sanding attachment on the pegs to melt em, sure it was suppose to sand the base of the pegs off which it did... but it was melting it too so that's why I said MELT. Stop being a rambunctious, self-contradictory dickhead. You said:

when I 1st started, the only tools I had was an Exacto-Knife, a philips screwdriver, and Krazy Glue

By definition, a "tool" is: (from the The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition
Copyright © 2006 by Houghton Mifflin Company)

1. A device, such as a saw, used to perform or facilitate manual or mechanical work.
2.
a. A machine, such as a lathe, used to cut and shape machine parts or other objects.
b. The cutting part of such a machine.
c. A bookbinder's hand stamp.
d. A design impressed on a book cover by such a stamp.

Foam is not a tool. It does not "perform or facilitate manual or mechanical work." Foam is a materal, which, by definition, is "The substance or substances out of which a thing is or can be made. "

Moving on:

That's rich.
What's next? Using C4 to blow the pump caps off you air guns?
I would say shooting shotgun shells out of titans, but that's already been done.

That was a joke. I was attempting to be funny in a sarcastic manner. If you did not think that was funny, I don't really give a rat's ass.

Rather then be a sarcastic "chitinous",

Really? I didn't know "a nitrogen-containing polysaccharide that forms a semitransparent horny substance and is a principal constituent of the exoskeleton, or outer covering, of insects, crustaceans, and arachnids." could be sarcastic. Also, I believe you need a noun there, after the adjectives "sarcastic" and "chitinous".

Doo yoo andur-stan da words comin outav mai mouve? O.O

No. I do not. Please type in this wonderful language we (civilized people) call English. If that's too hard, don't even type non-sensical bullshit at all.

Just my two copper pieces here, save the mav until you know what your doing, go get a Nightfinder and mod that, much easier and more satisfying if you are looking for range. the mav has the worst range of all the new guns, with the possible exception of some of the ball guns.

Thank you for the "Good Day", I'm having a pretty nice one so far.

To not derail from the original post, this is to Domi's question

Yes Domi, by taking out the 8 springs and AR pieces, the range will increase quite a bit.
No, the peg does NOT need to be taken out.
All of the guides say to take them out because they were made to be able to shoot stefans.
I agree with what Retiate has said about leaving the pegs on. The air wont need to fill up the void that would have been created if the pegs have been removed.
Hope this answers your questions

Oh my god!!!
Don't derail the damn thread and shut the fuck up. Take it to PM's.
Domi, once you've taken the restrictor pieces out, you can also increase the maverick's range by putting 4 or 5 pennies behind the spring, so it will be even more compressed, thus exerting more force.

Actually, I wouldn't put more than 4 pennies, as apparently this can snap the metal cocking rod on your cocking slider.

Though Frost Vectron just posted something about metal fence brackets (or braces I don't remember) and steel rods being used to make an indestructable slider.

Here it is.

You can also put a nail in where the old metal bar was, but from what I have read, that will eventually break off as well.

as far as taking out or leaving in the posts goes, consider this:

while leaving the posts in allows for a slightly smaller volume for the air to fill as it comes out of the plunger chamber, the amount is negligable. Air, as a compressible substance, acts as a second spring that is compressed by the first (mechanical) spring. By leaving in the post, you do make the volume of space that gets compressed smaller, hence more power. (slightly). However, by taking the post out, you alllow for a far more useful effect: The air fills the hole in the back of the dart, and expands it slightly. Therefore, less air escapes around the sides of the dart, and in actuality you gain more range from that than from leaving the post in. Of course, we're talking about irregular barrels and irregularly weighted foam darts, so in reality, it doesn't matter a damn bit. I would suggest taking the posts out, because if you're ever in a situation where you want to shoot a stefen, and the posts are in there, you'll want to shoot yourself in the head.

but you couldn't, because the stefen won't load. And we wouldnt want that, would we?

"I don't know," Alice answered.

UPDATE

Damn it, adding the foam to cushion the plunger's impact with the barrel didn't work, it was still loud as ever.
As for adding the pennies, it's risky as Erik said, for my strike/cross fires I only added 3 each, and for my Scout, I added only 1 since adding 2-3 made it MUCH harder to cock it back and I didn't wanna risk it (I'm one of those rare people that actually like the Scout haha).

squirtguns don't have air restrictors and there's more than enough air pressure in one to fire a dart. just drill out the hole where the water comes out, epoxy a barrel on there, and throw on some paint. Not hard. It'll have decent range, but a crap rate of fire. So it goes.

Crossfire, even though you're new, please either stay on topic, or start your own thread.

As for the topic, in my maverick, I left the post in, but drilled out some of the supports. Instead of 6, there are now only 3. I get 50 feet easy with dart tag darts.

Sorry about being a n00b and all, but I was wondering if I took out the long shaft/pin on my nite finder, will it leave the dart in still? or will it fall out?

I have heard that it can fall out, and that I should make the barrel longer, but wont that be harder to reload? (have to shove the dart down there with my finger)

PS: I dont want to shoot stefans, anyways.

It only falls out if your dart is too skinny or your barrel is too wide. You can shoot stock darts without a peg, as noted earlier in the topic. Longer barrels are better, though. If you want to learn more, check a preexisting topic or make your own. This is not the place to talk about your Nite Finder.
