anyone know what purpose this serves, and perhaps a link or a write up on how to install....I'm guessing it goes in place of the little flimsy crappy orange tube attached to front of the plunger?

You probably are referring to modded LS's, and that is a stabilizer for the brass barrel they use to replace the shitty stock barrel.
